It’s just amazing to me that you accomplished this level of quality...on what you say is a “low budget”. I’m sure that term means something totally different in my world lol. I *love* behind the scenes features, though. Tarantino, Fincher, Hitchcock, Wes Anderson (one of my favs)...it’s fascinating to see how your team accomplishes all of this. Just incredible entertainment, guys.

Thanks! Low budget is certainly relative. My last short was done for $200 and that was as low budget for that as the amount I had for this one. As it scales it gets harder to pull off.

Here I am doing simple 1 or 2 minute corporate talking heads videos for small businesses (props to Film Riot for teaching me everything I know ... shooting 4 of them this month using the skills learned from you guys) and dreaming of doing my first short. I don't know if you guys want to answer this question: but how much budget did you guys had for this short? Looks like a stunt team with five, six people including all gear, on itself, would be big exspenses. Cheers

Ryan don’t need Hollywood son. People make fun of Tyler Perry for his terrible Madea movies but what he’s doing is running a studio himself on his own terms. I think Ryan could pull this off to and probably be more up his ally anyways than hoping to get a feature with a studio and doing it their way. Ryan be our RU-vid Tyler Perry!!!

Your team really brings it. I know you talked about this being a low budget project, and you were able to rent cameras and other gear. But I'm guessing you still hit the $7,000 - $10,000 range for this film based on the HitFilm crew dropping $5,000 on Rebellion. Keep up the great work!

KASIX CREATIVITY wire removal is usually easy. Most vfx editing suites have a wire removal tool. For the matts, if you pay attention, ryan says they only used them for pratice falls. For the real falls there were no matts. The other way to do it is to do the first part of the motion with the matt and then fake the landing without. In After effects there is effects like Wire removal, but what I saw them do is rotoscoping and masking, all is well depending on the shot!

If you're comping in AE, there's an effect called camera lens blur, you can set the aspect ratio of your lens and it squash and stretches the bokeh appropriately. This also works with your zdepth pass if you're using cg elements too.

2ndRateRSL No it's about $100 - VideoCopilot do tons of elements and plugins you can use but they're high quality so you get what you pay for (you can also choose your quality i.e. 1080p is cheaper than 4K)

Why are the cables black? Wouldn't it be easier to make the green so that they can be removed in post easier. I was able to see part of the cable on the stunt man hitting the van shot.

It’s all about ideas and process. Focus on that and scale it to where you are at now. There’s so much value in looking at how it’s done on a larger scale and then getting creative to take similar ideas and do it your way.

I have a beginner's question. How did you remove the matress and the people holding it although they arebstanding infront of the shot. Did you take an empty shot and mask it? I can't imagine how that can work as seamless as in the video.

For me personally, the shot with less blood on the windshield looks much better, much more realistic. It's the only shot in the film that looked obviously fake to me.

We all want to grow as we improve our talent. However there is a huge crossover from low budget to not so low budget. I am happy to see you advance, but I am sad to see my low budged mentor move on to bigger things. I can't blame you as I to want to move onto bigger things too.

Storytelling/engaging an audience is the same across all budgets. I got all my learning from shows like movie magic talking about how films like terminator was made. Process is not specific to budget.

Absolutely. I didn't take any offense to your comment. There was nothing bad about what you said at all. I was just hoping to give a better perspective on why episodes like this are very valuable to up and coming filmmakers. And don't worry. The no-budget side is never going away. We are working toward a balance of the two worlds to make it all as beneficial as possible.
