Can’t believe this is the first time I’ve actually seen this video. WTF !!!?? One of the best lines ever “you used to chase dreams - now you chase the dragon”.
Reminiscing and feeling nostalgic, especially as it's Saturday. I distinctively remember sunny Saturdays in Milton Keynes, a pseudo American city designed and built by a firm of architects from Texas, USA! And particularly between 1983 to 1985 'the special years', I remember when I first discovered the universal power of music 🌌🎶🎵❤️
Thought of this song as I was driving through Milton Keynes today. 14 roundabouts on the A421.. I remember the song being on the album Our Favourite shop.
I loved this song in 1985 but I only heard it like twice because it got hardly any airplay. I wanted to hear it more but whoever chose what was played on the radio made the decision on my behalf that I wasn't to hear it and I couldn't buy the record because I was a kid with no money. And now I can hear it any time I want. Hooray for internet.
May I walk you home tonight On this fine and lovely night tonight - We'll walk past the luscious houses, Through rolling lawns and lovely flowers - Our nice new town where the curtains are drawn Where hope is started and dreams can be borne. Let us share our insanity Go mad together in Community Boys on the corner looking for their supper Boys round the green looking for some slaughter - We used to chase dreams now we chase the dragon Mine is the semi with the Union Jack on. In our paradise lost we'll be finding our sanity In this paradise found we'll be losing our way - For a brave new day. May I slash my wrists tonight, On this fine Conservative night tonight - I was looking for a job so I came to town I easily adopt when the chips are down - I read the ad about the private schemes I liked the idea but now I'm not so Keyne.
Masks ? It was your decision if you wore one. The same as the jabs, it was decision to take them ! Just remember, if the Government tells you to do something run the opposite way at 100 mph. It was ALL unlawful and proven from day one. Live your life, not theirs. Anti-establishment tunes from the past should of taught everybody something surely ?
In my (American's) opinion, this may be the best SC song. Loved since I was too young to drive, much less travel to England. First loved the melody, and the foreign appeal of places and opinions I didn't know about. Loved it ever since because of, and still irrespective of that.
??? Such a shame you didn't realise then that this is a massive piss-take about a place universally agreed to be about the shittiest place in England?....and that it bemoans the god-awful state the country is in? PS it hasn't got any better! Not much appeal in the foreign place depicted in this hatchet job...Sorry to shatter your dreams.
Esparto ESP8266 firmware Sorry Esparto. That was kinda my point. Not some idyllic land of British gumdrops. Rather that there were class struggles - and musicians willing to speak out - in most nations. That's what Paul Weller taught me. ... And I was like 14 dude.
Not many, if any, pop groups do 'politics' in music anymore (I guess it's unfashionable) but Paul Weller and Mick Talbot did. By this stage of the bands career they were, artistically, at the height of their power.
And it was downhill from there. This is a ludicrous and rather egomaniacal video, that surely won it no fans among former Jam-lovers. I’m rather glad this video was never played on MTV… my friends knew I liked the Style Council and this is not their finest moment.
Great vocal on this. Our Favourite Shop was quite correct, it reflected the state the country was in at the time, and it’s not got much better either, various politicians interfering and their stupid ideas.
Apparently people in Milton Keynes got quite upset about this. Can kinda see why, but no getting away from it, it's a great song and a very clever and funny video.
I remember better than most because I lived in Milton Keynes at the time, and my dad help build it, ha. Anyway, I've written about it in my Weller/SC write up stevepafford.com/weller60/
Up until recently (i.e. pre-Coronavirus times) it was one of the fastest growing towns in Britain. I stayed as a guest in someone's self-build house in a street of them there where people just bought the plots of land and did it themselves.
so if style council, first prize is a defence contractor, second installation, third a nurse, and then conslation prizes of toy dolls and armservice contacts
They did get a lot of crap, and I remember better than most because I lived in Milton Keynes at the time, and my dad help build it, ha. Anyway, I've written about it in my Weller/SC write up stevepafford.com/weller60/
Last time I visited the concrete crows were in a railinged circular display area in part of the main shopping centre. Before that they were apparently in Stacey Bushes, which is a district of northern Milton Kenyes not a person, for a while. They were originally in a field where they were the subject of various pranks and kidnappings.
Corporate American fast food wasn't as massive as it is today in the UK in 1984. With only 146 McDonald's in the entire country at the time [I checked the numbers]. So I think this is Weller seeing what was coming down the tracks towards the UK regarding fast food and all the problems that would cause.
If i recall the statue of liberty bit the lyrics where american express f##k of id rather walk but i think that got changed because of the f word or amex getting legal on their arse.
Was a good album got the day I was 18 same day live aid was on , just can't get away with mick Talbot r dc Lee latter ,think he lost his mind at sum point at this point , never made it back with 2 b true
2:20 I wonder who this lady is with the conveniently hidden face…Paulie perhaps? 2:22 and nice one, boys. Because there really needed to be a shot of the boys making out with themselves, didn’t there…? I would ask what was running through Paulie’s head, but probably best not to. It’s Paulie Weller, don’t question it.
For MK which of course, being less than 20 years old at the time, is unsurprising. MK @ 50 has found its feet and (and I would never suggest it is a cultural Oasis) it is far from the cultural Desert and faceless town it once was, I for one love the place, but I couldn't eat a whole one. I hope the other new towns have similarly grown into their skins - would be interested to take a cultural litmus test if you stop by.
First time I’ve ever seen the video - my God, Blur we’re watching! The song itself is horrible really. The 45 had a far superior b-side - ‘When You Call Me’.
