I am not a native English speaker, but I find the subjunctive mood quite easy. It needs a little bit of concentration so that you can learn the rules by heart and of course it requires a lot of practice on your part.

The subjunctive mood is the Twilight Zone of language learning. Situations that are in the limit of existence. Things that are but are not, at the same time. One of the reasons why learning foreign languages is so interesting. It makes you thnk!

I've been speaking English alongside my native tongue for as long as I can remember and never know knew about the subjunctive mood. I also used to use it without realising it, eg. "If I*were* in your place." However, I was only introduced to the topic because of Spanish, as the subjunctive mood is a lot more prominent there. Very interesting how learning a new language improves your previously learnt languages!!

It's true. The subjunctive in present is hardly ever used in British English. It would be: 'I recommend that she sees a specialist.' BUT we do used this in past. 'I recommended that she see a specialist.' Great lesson!

It's a very tricky subject because native speakers take many liberties with it. You don't really need it for daily communication. If you're doing a test and need to know it well, then it will help to make some notes for yourself and then try to teach it to someone else with your own examples. That's the most effective way of mastering anything.

@@AngloLinkEnglish Thank you very much for this lesson! The past subjunctive is more or less straight forward. However, the present subjunctive was a new concept for me. I’ve seen these constructions before and... Well, I was thinking that someone has just forgotten the -s at the end of the verb. Now I know what it is. That’s a great idea about teaching someone else! Fortunately, I know some fellow-artists who have no idea about present conjunctive. I’ll spread the word! Thanks again! Meanwhile, I’ll watch other lessons on your channel.

I'm not a native. Strangely, another day I was writing something in English and, for some reason, I felt that I shouldn't conjugate a verb because of some hypothetical sense in that context, but I didn't know why. Today I'm checking this out. Thanks a lot. Great video!

@@AngloLinkEnglish hey, maybe you can help with another thing. I never know if I have to say "to me" or "for me" when I want to express opinion; for example, replacing "in my opinion". Should I say "for me your video is great"? Or "to me"...? Is there any difference? I know that in some cases "for" may mean benefit. Thanks in advance.

I wish I could give you a clear-cut answer, but I'm afraid I can't. As with all prepositions, things are vague with 'to' and 'for'. Sometimes, they both work: That's useful TO/FOR me. Sometimes, only one is correct: That sounds good TO me. That works FOR me.

Great video! I have a quick comment on timestamp 5:00: I am a native Midwestern English speaker. We would actually say: I recommended he delays seeing a specialist. But in terms of actual pronunciation: I recuhmended he delays seein’ a specialist. The that is optional, but gives off a tone of formality or intelligence. It also functions as a signifier if soft power.

From what I can tell, the subjunctive is an action that is the object of the sentence, ie. It is not the main action going on in the sentence. Eg. "I asked her to write it down." The subject "I" did the verb "asked" to the object "her" - but where does leave the verb "write"? In that sentence no one is actually doing any writing at that time. It's just the hypothetical / planned action that is being (in that sentence) requested of "her". So "write it" is kind of an object in its own right, not the main verb (which is "asked"). I only had to find this out because I'm studying Spanish too (on RU-vid 🙂).

It is important that everyone explain subjunctive as clearly as you do. :) I learned something new today, thanks. P. S. I would have thought that British English used Present Subjunctive more than US English. On account Britts being more formal in their everyday lives. P. P. S. "When I used to live in France, were I to meet an intelligent man I immediately sought his company. If that be foolish ... Ah, I see you smile at that use of the subjunctive. I confess my weakness for that mood and for fine speech in general. A weakness that I criticize in myself, believe me... Smiling at the use of the subjunctive, in fact, proves your culture twice over because you recognize it to begin with and then because you feel superior to it." Camus - The Fall

question! how about the usage of "had been" instead of "were" in some situations such as "If I had been less tired, I would not have overslept" versus " If I were less tired..." Similarly you could think of the Beyonce song "if I were a boy" that is a context where you might also say or write "if I had been born a boy" to me as a native English speaker in the US, the use of were in this kind of situation would imply present instead of past. In other words, beyonce is saying right now in this instance if I were a boy instead of a woman this is what I would do, whereas if she wanted to refer to a past decision or action that would have been impacted by being a boy, she might say "if I had been a boy, I would have been a boyscout when I was growing up." By saying "had been" it makes it clear you refer to the past, but is this technically an incorrect/informal usage or does it count as subjunctive?
@AngloLinkEnglish
@AngloLinkEnglish 3 года назад
That's another completely valid construction (3rd Conditional), but grammar books don't teach 'had done' as a subjunctive form.

Thank you, Sadegh! I'm glad you've enjoyed this lesson. It's always delicate to use authentic material in YT videos because of copyright issues. That's why I prefer to come up with my own examples. Also, I find that when we're learning a complex structure for the first time, it's best to keep the vocabulary relatively simple so that the focus remains on the structure.

We, the non-native speakers, understand the Subjunctive mood better than the native speakers because we actually study it. Sooooo... good luck trying to convince them it's a real deal. I guess that's the consequence of not teaching grammar at schools any more.

Hi, teacher! I'd like to know what alternatives and sentences of your video I can use in American-English and what alternatives and sentences of your video I can use both in American-English and in British-English. I got these alternatives and sentences from your video: Alternative 1: Using the modal verb "should" (present & past): - It is necessary that they should be warned of the risks. - I recommend that he should see a specialists. Alternative 2: After expressions of importance: using "for..." + "infinitive with to" - It is necessary for them to be warned of the risks. Informal English (note): - It's necessary that they be warned of the risks. - It's necessary they are warned of the risks. - I recommended that he delay seeing a specialist. - I recommended he delayed seeing a specialist. I really thank you if you could answer my questions!
@AngloLinkEnglish
@AngloLinkEnglish 2 года назад
All of them are correct, both in American and in British English. The 'should' form is more common in British English. The 'base verb' form is more common in American English. The other two forms are equally common in the two versions.

Hi, and Thank you for the lesson. In, "I wish she (not be) so busy the whole time.", your correct answer was, "I wish she weren't so busy the whole time." Is there anything wrong with the alternative, "I wish she was not so busy the whole time."? Thanks again, B.
@AngloLinkEnglish
@AngloLinkEnglish 3 года назад
Hello William. 'I wish she was ...' doesn't follow the grammar rules, but it's a common 'native' mistake, and therefore acceptable in spoken English.

I had one doubt I would be Thankful if you answer that please I'd rather we not discuss this any further Answer you gave: I'd rather we didn't discuss this any further My doubt: I'd rather we not discussed this any further( instead of didn't I made discuss as discussed (past tense) is that right?) Do reply
@AngloLinkEnglish
@AngloLinkEnglish 2 года назад
Thank you, Sonal! In the same way that you have to use 'didn't discuss' to create the negative form of the Past Simple tense 'discussed', you also have to use 'didn't' to create the negative form of the Past Subjunctive form, except for 'were'.

@@AngloLinkEnglish there is one more thing bothering me in subjunctive please if you could answer that too. Present subjunctive: Eg : it is necessary that they be warned of the risk(so y warned doesn't follow the subjunctive rule as the "be" form of verb has followed right otherwise instead of " be " it would be "are" but it is subjunctive so " be " comes, so same way, should'nt it be "warn" ? As a subjunctive, y adding "ed" is necessary?)

@AngloLinkEnglish
@AngloLinkEnglish 3 года назад
Hello Larissa! Indeed, you can use 'were', and that would be grammatically more acceptable. However, as the Subjunctive is hardly used (especially in British English), it has become more common to use 'was' instead of 'were' with the exception of the expression 'If I were ...'

why do native speakers use the subjunctive especially for a few verbs? What intention do they have when they use the subjunctive? In my grammar book, there's a verbs list, which is used after the subjunctive(demand, insist, propose, recommend, suggest, etc.). And I'm having difficulties remembering them, 'cause I don't know the criterion why they were chosen among many verbs...I need your help..
@AngloLinkEnglish
@AngloLinkEnglish 4 года назад
Hello David, I' afraid I can't think of a logical reason. I think it's just a grammatical form that has come from Romance languages, and a little bit of it has stuck. Native British English speakers hardly ever use it. As I said in the lesson, they circumvent it by using 'should'.

As I mention in the lesson, the present subjunctive form = the base verb (infinitive without to). As I mention in one of the notes, in everyday spoken English, you can use the normal tense (upgrades), but not in formal written English.

So, if we drop "that" There's no subjunctive? And if I say "It's necessary they be warned" Would be wrong because there's no "that"? And " It was vital that they be warned of the risks" Will be " It was vital they be warned of the risks" And if I put a "that" It'll be wrong. "it was vital that they were warned of the risks. " And is this right? "I recommended they should see a specialist" And does this mean if I said "I'd rather eat pizza" it would be wrong? Or it's better "I'd rather I ate pizza" And if I skip the second "I", can I keep it in present? " "I'd rather eat pizza".Should I use it with (prefer) too? "I'd prefer to eat pizza " "I'd prefer I ate pizza" Hmm...
@roaklarson9699

Ok, I'm a native english speaker so I'll be able to help. I think, in the first example with the question about 'that'. You could use it without 'that' but it sounds kinda wierd. If I were you I'd use 'that'. In your second question about the form; I'd just leave it as is. If you wanted you could switch the main verb to 'I prefer'. Although it sounds more formal and kind of akward in colliquial english. I hope that this helped you.
