Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) has announced the latest stage of its Subway modernisation programme, which will require the suspension of Subway train services for approximately four weeks from Saturday 2 July 2016.

The Glasgow Subway is an underground metro line in Glasgow, Scotland. Opened on 14 December 1896, it is the third-oldest underground metro system in the world after the London Underground and the Budapest Metro. It is the only heavy rail underground metro system in the British Isles outside London, and also the only one in the British Isles which operates completely underground. It is also one of the very few railways in the world with a track running gauge of 4 ft (1,219 mm)

As a Glaswegian myself I love reading some of the comments on here about how small the subway is.. At least Glasgow has a subway system that works and looks good too.. 😉

Certainly better than the one in Dublin! Seriously though, the Glasgow Subway is a nice sleek and efficient system - as an Irishman, I'm jealous when I look at the Glaswegian transport planning back in the 1970's and the efforts to modernise the Subway as well as the mainline tunnel beneath Argyle Street. Alas, Irish transport policy is dictated by a bunch of leprechauns who think cycling will solve all of Dublin's transport problems - any excuse for not doing either the DART Underground or Metro North there.

Glasgow has a good enough suburban heavy rail network. We got the Argyle Line in the late 70s, which reopened the line going East-West underground through Glasgow, which was pretty much a brand new subway line for the time.

Brilliant. They should totally extend it though. That would make so much sense, monetarily and in terms of general development.
@bfapple

David Terrasidius No it wouldn't, mainline trains are far superior.

From what I can gather,Glasgow is built on hard rocky ground,apparently it would cost around ten times the amount per mile than London(soft clay) but I think that was before the current tunneling machines,so maybe it would be cost effective now.

They should do a Newcastle sort of route here, even extend it as far as the capital itself and make it an interlinking service in both cities for the future will only need it eventually.

This has to be the smallest subway platform and cars I've ever seen. Many of the passengers are taller than the train as it pulls into the station. I pray that there are no express trains bypassing stations, for they'd blow many passengers off the platform, especially the platform noted in the beginning of the video. In addition, if the platform was crowded with passengers boarding in either direction, it would be a nightmare for safety purposes. Nevertheless, like the design of the rail cars, but not the bench seating. Thank you for the video...
@bfapple

I’d probably whack my head in the door. It was designed in the times where the passenger were expected to be 5’ 6” and by the time I get here, I’ll be at least 6 feet tall.

It's safe enough for the number of people who use the subway. You don't find platforms like that at any of the busy stations on the London Underground. It's just most of the stations with narrow platforms don't have to take many people
@James-gc5if

There are a couple of stations on the Northern Line in south London with dangerously narrow island platforms, in stations that do suffer from peak overcrowding, which has seen TfL get some stick.
