** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
Aad van de Wetering - the Dutch Grandmaster of Sudoku Construction - returns to the channel today with his puzzle Diamonds. This is a lovely reminder of our most popular video of all, which also featured a magic square at its core :)
Play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. The central 3x3 box (in grey) is a magic square ie each row/column/3-cell diagonal must add to the same sum. On each coloured diamond there are a maximum of three different digits. (No digits need to be placed on the yellow diamond outside the grid!)
Our most popular video is this one:

When Simon was asking “is there anything more I can do with the 4s” it felt like one of those kids’ shows where the host asks a question that the kids watching at home are supposed to shout the answer to at the screen XD

I cannot tell you how comforting it is to return every day to a new beautiful puzzle, accompanied by the same curious mind, kind words, clever secrets/tricks/insights and a step-by-step guidance through the logic. It takes my mind off things that mustn't be my focus right before going to sleep, and shifts my attention to the wonders of pure logic and inspiring creativity. Watching your videos, I feel as if I'm in a place where everything makes sense, yet, simultaniously, careful attention is required to notice the hidden beauty. Simon sometimes calls this "the universe is singing." It has been and is a soothing balm for so many aficionados of the channel. Some would say there is something sacred in the air, others use other language but they mean the same thing. On this channel you do not find flame wars, polarisation and nastiness - modulo the occasional bifurcation disagreement.

I think Simon missed the most beautiful piece of logic here. After filling in the magic square, it's possible to immediately tell that green is 123, blue is 456 and yellow is 789, just by looking at the central box. For example, if you know the blue line has 3 digits, one in r456 each in box4, one in r456 each in box6 then it must be one in r456 each in box5. The same is true with columns - if your digits are placed on c456 in box2 and c456 in box8 then it's on c456 in box5 too. If you think about it, you will immediately realize that on green 1 and 3 must go with 2, on yellow it must be either 714 or 789 but the former is impossible because of the 4 on r1, and the rest - 456 - must go on the blue line. From there on it's just a simple sudoku exercise.
@ipudisciple
@ipudisciple Год назад
Nice. Maybe an even nicer finish is: From blue 456 you know that the other sets are 123 and 789 because you need 3 sets which are all r456 and c456 in box 5 and that's the only way. Now box 2 proves green 456 and yellow 789.

One neat thing that this puzzle didn't require you to see but which is very beautiful, is that the three digits on green, and the three digits on blue, must be taken from distinct rows _and_ columns of the central box - the proof is left as an exercise to the reader :p. So once the magic square is filled out, it's trivial to determine the 3rd green digit, and it's pretty quick to work out the blue digits too. I'm not a constructor so I have no sense of how hard it would be to do this, but I'd love to see a puzzle like this where the break-in depended on that idea!

6:06, there's a quick-solve method After solving the Magic Square in the center, I saw the unused cells in boxes 2,4,6,8 must be part of the Yellow Diamond triple. I then colored all Yellow Diamond squares, all Green Diamond squares, and all Blue Diamond squares. Using the colors to determine which diamond's triple a cell belonged to made solving it much faster. Knowing 7 was Yellow, 1/3 were Green and 4 was Blue was enough to fill in the central box for colors which also gave the values on each diamond, then colored/filled in the rest of the grid.

Very enjoyable puzzle. Took me just shy of 100 minutes. Got stuck on two points and Simon’s logic helped me out. Well, the first time I got stuck was because I missed the diagonal part of the rules for magic squares. But then then logic really broke open when Simon explained two cells adjacent to the magic square in row 5 needed to be on the yellow line. It was perfectly obvious - those four cells (r3c5, r5c3, r7c5 & r5c7) functioned as the point of the yellow diamond.

Yet again I used different logic from Simon to get the answer. The three digits on each coloured line can not share a row or column in the middle box. If they did - for example, say the blue digits were 6, 7 & 4 then in column 4 (where 6 & 7 are both in the same column in the middle box) both the blue line digits would have to be 4. It took me a while to find that logic but once I did it was easy to work out from there. A very enjoyable puzzle.

@mathmethman
@mathmethman Год назад
With hindsight, there's a lot you can deduce from the rules and the diamonds before you even begin to deal with the given digits. Some boxes contain 3 green, 3 blue, 2 yellow and 1 spare digit. So altogether the diamonds must cover at least 8 different digits. Notice that there are two 'spare digits' in the same line (and two in the same column) so at least one of these must be on a diamond. Neither can be blue or green (because that would make 4 blue/green digits within a box) so at least one 'spare digit' must be yellow, giving a box containing 3 green, 3 blue and 3 yellow. Hence the diamonds cover all 9 digits with no digit appearing on two diamonds. If we now compare the middle box (the magic square) with its orthogonal neighbours, we can also conclude that each row and each column contains 1 green, 1 blue and 1 yellow. All this will help considerably with the placement of actual digits. The paragraph above also explains why the three colours split so neatly as 123 / 456 / 789. Given the distribution required by the magic square, the only other way to divide these (and still maintain the 1G/1B/1Y logic) is 147 / 258 / 369 which is a different kind of pattern.

@andrewcook4873
@andrewcook4873 Год назад
Since Simon didn’t seem to quite do it the way I did I’ll add a bit more explanation. The first thing to note is that the digits on the yellow line must be different from anything on blue or green. So the digits not on lines in boxes 2, 4, 6, and 8 are all yellow digits. And so every row and column in the magic square must contain one blue, one yellow and one green digit. Since we know that 1, and 3 are green and 7 is yellow we can just immediately colour the whole of the magic square giving the colours on all the diamonds immediately.

@ 32:08 How can you not see that 4 goes in R8C5? You've highlighted all the 4s, and there is a 4 in R7 eliminating 4 from two of the three blue cells in box 8. One of the blue cells must be 4, I wonder which? When you placed the 4 in box 9, you should have automatically looked what that did. You did look up, but there are two dimensions in a sudoku grid. This wasn't a shouting occasion, but a hangs-head-in-disbelief moment. Very classy as always from Aad. There's always something special about an Aad puzzle, they really are little gems, and not usually too difficult. I bet you could easily spot one of his puzzles in the Skunkworks challenge. I too thought it amusing that he made us work to find that the lines were 123, 456, and 789, even though, it being an Aad puzzle, you could put money on it being so from the start.

At around 22:00 I think you logic yourself into a bit of a corner - it doesn't matter if 7 ever appears on a yellow line or not you can happily call it yellow. There are essentially 3 groups of three digits - blue, green and "is allowed to be on yellow, but not on blue or green" so it doesn't hurt to just call that third group yellow, even if it's not necessarily the case that a given "yellow" digit ever appears on a yellow line. I mean, you did quickly prove that the 7 is actually yellow, but stil. I found this to be something of a colouring puzzle, because you get some really useful colourings out of it

I'm quite surprised Simon didn't take this up as an opportunity to paint the grid in 3 colors. It seemed to scream that to me, and it definitely helped me spot things and solve the puzzle faster (though I used Orange instead of Yellow).

Another way of saying that the 7 is on a yellow line is that the inner digit that isnt on a line in box 2,4,6,8 must be the digit on the yellow line that is outside the sudoku as the other digits are in the other cells

00:49:54 On the contrary, I somehow figured out that 7 is on the yellow line right from the start. I kinda knew that 5 had to be the center of the magic square but I wasn't sure of it and I didn't wanna just look it up so I spent like 10 minutes proving it myself lol

since the animation is with sound, it would be great if the sound would depend on the numbers on the path. like a marble running over sound tiles.

You can also see that every trio of 3 digits on a line can’t share a row or column in the middle box, otherwise it will force both cells of the same color in the row/column the two cells are sharing to be the same digit, you kinda used it for the first 2 but also for the next trio could have made it faster once you know it’s 4 and 5 then the only possible digit is 6 and for the last trio once you knew 7 was in it then it can’t be a 6 and would have to be a 789, maybe you did realize it eventually or maybe found another solution
