** IT'S LIVE: OUR KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED **
Thank you so much to everyone who supported our Kickstarter yesterday - the base book funded in just 2 hours!!! Now we're trying to meet stretch goals to make the book everything we think it could be :)
Want to take a look at Cracking The Cryptic's Greatest Hit Volume 2. Here's the link:
www.kickstarter.com/projects/...
** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
[Apologies for the ludicrous picture in the thumbnail. Peter - our Kickstarter organiser - has been creating anime adaptions of real pictures, with comedy effect!!]
Cut In Half by Adem Jaziri has been described as "one of the most enjoyable puzzles I have ever solved" as well as earning "mind blown" emojis on Discord. It's just a fabulous (and APPROACHABLE!) sudoku.
Give yourself some free joy and play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits may not repeat along the main diagonal marked in blue. Clues outside the grid give the sum of the digits along the indicated diagonal. Cells separated by a knight's move (in chess) cannot contain the same digit. Grey lines are palindromes and must read the same forwards and backwards.
** OCTOBER MONTHLY REWARD - OUT NOW **
The Duality Sudoku Hunt is just out. Massive thanks and kudos to the Sudoku Skunkworks for creating such a brilliant set of puzzles (14 in all!). You'll be able to enter the competition if you can solve the first 4 sudokus. If you solve all 14 by 20 October, you'll get a shoutout.
We've also just released Simon & Mark's solve of Vignettes by zetamath, which you can play at the link below:

One of the things I find addictive about these videos is, even though I am in no way able to solve a puzzle like this from start to finish myself, I'm occasionally able to get one step ahead of Simon or Mark on a piece of logic, and when I'm able to do so its very satisfying. In this case it was realizing a 36 pair in row seven made yellow a 2, much earlier than Simon worked it out

@Blake Robinson great tip, indeed. That´s probably how most of us have improved at solving sudokus ourselves. There are other channels that feature easier ones, but definitely Simon has something that attracts us all!

From 25:38, you can see that r3c9 can eliminate the 2 from r7c9, then you are are left on box 9 on the diagonal with 36 36 and 236, so yellow is 2.

One idea for puzzles with colors like this, when you solve a digit (like when you had placed all nine 9s, 1s, or 5s) color that digit dark grey. That both frees up colors (red in this case) and also makes it easier to scan for "Can X be Y?" because if Y is dark grey you'll know that nothing else can be it.

I found 2 in box 4 early on by looking at the palindrome line. That helped sort out a lot. Left me doing colors with 47 and 36 pairs, figured out a couple of random 8s positions... Finally came down to the 20 diagonal sum to resolve everything. Really fun stuff!

That mirror logic between the pairing is perfect. 5 with itself, 9 with 1, 8 with 2, 7 with 4, and 6 with 3. It's a beautiful puzzle. The diagonal mirrors it's pair along the diagonal and the numbers mirror it's pair on other sides of the diagonal. Beautiful to look at.

Same here, couldn't even start!
@victorfinberg8595
@victorfinberg8595 Год назад
@@FredT34 You don't need to be as brilliant as Simon to solve this puzzle. Indeed, this puzzle is a good demonstration of how to use standard procedures to solve intermediate variant sudokus. The first thing to be aware of is that this is a "miracle" sudoku. Starting from apparently nothing, you can solve this puzzle, which appears to be miraculous. This generally involves a knight's constraint. This constraint is so powerful that two givens, or even one, are typically all you need to get all instances of that digit. To start this puzzle, look at the diagonal clues. They are all pretty average. You will get no joy there. Don't waste any time on them. Only the palindromes are even vaguely interesting. To the untrained eye, they look useless, but try a couple of things before you give up. Pick a cell and its duplicate. May as well start with an endpoint. May as well use the box 2/4 endpoints. No analysis is needed yet. Just fill in all possible candidate cells around the grid in any box that's even slightly restricted with a colour splash. ignore box 9 for now. As you do this, look for any restricted cells. You do need to know the knight's rule patterns. The fact that r5c5 is the only available cell on the long diagonal stands out immediately. This now allows you to strongly reduce the candidate cells in all the other boxes. Indeed, you get all 9 occurrences of that digit in the grid, and you can use the killer clues to find that it must be 5. So you're off to a very good start. Rinse and repeat. As you can see, you don't need to do anything more than apply a simple, known procedure.

Approachable you say? Try doing it without the anti-knight's rule. I'd been at it 20 minutes before I realised my mistake. After that, the break-in was spotted almost by accident. I had earlier coloured both lines, and I was wondering whether the ends of both lines could be the same, then thanks to Sir Helpsalot, realised they _had_ to be the same, because both could only go in the centre cell, and this forced both 16 and 24 diagonals to have triple 5s on them. What a brilliant break-in. After wondering why on earth you seem oblivious to the effect of the 2 in box 3 on the 236 triple in box 9, at 25:07 you highlight the very 2 that means R7C9 can't be 2, leaving yellow as the only place 2 can go, yet you just don't see it, saying "the problem is yellow could be 2". Use your eyes, yellow MUST be 2. Your new specs clearly haven't helped.

My technique for coloring is to use light gray flashes to show options for the first 8 digits, but then at the end, treat light gray as the 9th digit, delete the flashes from anywhere that sees a light gray, and you're just left with the options for that group of cells.

I needed the first step. I was clueless on how to start this. I did something completely different to see the 47 and 36 pairs. I noticed some cells looked at both sides of the pallindrome, so they had to be the same. Unfortunately, it forced me to make guesses and pray, but it ended up looking more beautiful knowing that the pallindrome was how you see the similar cells throughout the entire grid. I like it when the entire grid just fills with pairs and one thread just untangles everything.

Simon was spectacularly brilliant at the beginning, then he missed the easiest and most powerful deduction❗ At playback time 23:13, the answer to his question should have been: _"no, that cell cannot be blue"._ This would have markedly simplified the following steps. It would have allowed him to place *blue, green, 8* and *2* everywhere before using the *11-diagonal.* This approach is amazingly gratifying, because immediately before pencilmarking the *11-diagonal* the grid appears full of colours and digits but totally clean, with no pencilmarks.
@dsquirrel
@dsquirrel Год назад
For those (like me) who don't see this instantly: 1. Suppose r6c2 and r3c5 were blue (they have to be the same by palindrome logic). 2. Simon's just noted that blue in box 1 has to be in r2c2 or r3c3, each of which sees one of the blues we've just posited. So neither r6c2 nor r3c5 can be blue. 3. Now consider where blue can go in row 3. r3c1 is ruled out by sudoku; r3c4 is matched with r5c2 on the palindrome, and the latter sees the blue in r5c8; we just ruled out r3c5; r3c6 is ruled out by knight's move; and all the other squares save r3c3 are already populated with values that are not 4 or 7. So r3c3 must be blue. 4. Plain sudoku now gives us blue in r4c2, r2c4, and r6c5, completing the blues. 5. We can now colour r5c2 and r3c4 green, and proceed just as Simon does later in the solve to place all the greens in the grid using sudoku, knight's move, and the diagonal. 6. Note 2 can't go in r6c2, because by palindrome logic this cell is identical to r3c5, which sees a 2. That puts 2 in r5c1, and remaining 2s follow by sudoku and knight's move. 7. For the 8s, place 8 in r5c9 by sudoku, then eliminate 8 from r6c3 by knight's move, meaning the 8 in box 4 is in r6c2 by sudoku. By palindrome logic we also have 8 in r3c5, and the diagonal constraint gives us 8 in r2c8. The remaining 8s follow by sudoku.

@@dsquirrel That's right. Thank you. The break-in was mind-blowing, this part was amazingly gratifying. Everything was quite approachable. This puzzle is so well constructed it deserves to be included in the book. 👏👏👏

i was using a lot of mirror logic in my solve, so when i had a 1, i knew the mirrored position in the grid would contain a 9 i was kinda worried when the point came when i realized that 4 doesn't mirror 6, i first though i've broken the puzzle :D

He seems to be overlooking that 2 or 8 cannot go on the palindrome. Rather, what I mean is they can be placed immediately on row 5.

It would be cool if they could do a Q & A where viewers send in puzzles they are stumped on or otherwise struggling with the logic on and talk through some of the logic of solving them or seeing certain patterns. Maybe not solving the whole puzzle but going in more depth about particularly challenging parts.

At 20:00 you can already place the 2 and 8 in row 5. The 8 in box 8 checks the palindrome line in box 6 and the 8 in box 9 checks column 6, and checks row 6 column 7 by knight's move, and the same logic applies symmetrically

Interesting symmetry. Turn the puzzle round 180 degrees and swap 4 and 7, 3 and 6, 2 and 8, 1 and 9, leaving 5 alone and you get the same grid.

Since this started out as a colouring puzzle, I thought I'd challenge myself and see if you could colour in the whole grid, without ever entering a single digit (so, completely ignoring the diagonal sums). That's 3 hours of my life I'll never get back. But yes, it is in fact possible!

Starting at 19:45, my solution diverges strongly from Simon's. Based on the principle that this is a miracle Sudoku, I looked at specific digits across the whole grid. All the 2s and 8s can be completed in short order, and then i fully colourized the remaining 4 sets of cells, disambiguating only at the very end.

Everybody's saying how great and approachable this is. I've spent about an hour on it, in more than one session, and have not *nothing*. I can see from the comments that the idea of colouring is important (which I'd guessed!) but all I end up with is dozens and dozens of places where something might just be. It's so built up that I don't want to spoil the fun by watching the video, but I fear I might have to.
