THE SUGAR BOAT SHIPWRECK: River cruise to MV Captayannis in the River Clyde, Glasgow.

I first saw this ship wreck ten years ago on Google satellite and decided one day I would see it up close. Clyde Charters were operating a few hour-long cruises to the wreck, so how could I not go. The MV Captayannis was shipping sugar from East Africa and berthed off the coast by Greenock. A strong wind swept up the River Clyde, made the ship drift, she dragged its anchor, and keeled over. The ship is affectionally known as the 'Sugar Boat' by the people of Glasgow.

I remember when this ship sank, i was serving my apprenticeship as a carpenter in Fergusons at the time. I recall going to work the day after the ship sank, we were on the boat being built and looking down the clyde and saw it. We did,nt know what was going on. But the night before we had a heleva storm and it left a mark. My God around 50 years ago.

Yes it has become an impromptu tourist attraction and I enjoyed my visit to it , James Watt Marina is interesting as well with its crane and what was once the old sugar warehouse , it is a pity the snack bar doe's not take cards but at least there is a Mc Donald's nearby .

Great !.....I laughed out loud at the cormorants sitting in a row watching you lot huddled in a boat . I bet they were thinking how strange those humans are 😂

Hi Jim, I was imagining the birds were thinking "we fly out here for some peace, and even here those humans follow us!"

Great little video, enjoyed watching it. You should come on one of our Little Cumbrae trips, I think you would really like it... Ronnie @ Clyde Charters

I'm keeping an eye open for the Little Cumbrae departures. I was told to look out on Facebook. Do you expect any departures in the next 4-6 weeks or so?

My dad was on board the ship it colided with. It was the anchor of my dad's ship that caused the hole in the side of the sugar boat

Hi Marvin and thanks for your comment. Everyone is holding back this year. Next week's video will feature Louisiana food from the food van I mentioned.

Slap Ya Mama seasoning is very good. I use it when I BBQ and smoke chicken or pork.

That was a strange boat you were on. Not built for comfort! Been past the wreck on the Waverley a few times .

Hi Jim... I thought it would be one of those inflatable Zodiac boats, and I wasn't the only person surprised at the boat we were on. The web page does say - if it rains you get wet, so we were prepared.
