I'd say, for mainstream Mario games, it was Mario Sunshine that was the first game that had a plot and had a character arc. Kinda. At least the part where Bowser Jr., disguised as Shadow Mario, kidnaps Princess Peach and claimed it was because she was his mother. I think that was the first time there was a plot that wasn't completely throwaway and affected the overall game in some fashion.

And no, the movie wasn't made by Nintendo. It was made by Illumination. But after the live action Mario Bros. flop in the 90's, Nintendo was going to have a more hands on approach to this one to make sure it better represented the Mario franchise. I don't get what point you're trying to make. Or how you confused a conversation about which Mario game had a plot first with who made the latest movie.
Simmons talked about how Koizumi's writing affected the characterization for Bowser and Peach, and I think that's also why DK is also a muscular show-off. Koizumi directed Jungle Beat, and the entire plot of that game is DK kicking ass to prove he's the strongest in the jungle. They were probably drawing from that instead of the DKC "lovable oaf".
Man Max not wanting to have Wario (& Waluigi) in any future Mario movies kinda stings. But it’s very understandable. Knowing Illumination’s Despicable Me and Minions movies, Wario would amount to gross nose picking and fart jokes.

Bowser didn't need the star at all. He destroyed everyone without it. He pretty much obtained it so that it can be used against him, which makes me think why didn't the penguins use it at all if they had it in the first place 😅

Yoshi being shown but not used is even a call back. Miyamoto had the idea of Mario riding a dinosaur, which would become Yoshi, for the first Super Mario. But the tech wasn't there yet to make it work until the SNES. This movie left me feeling happy as shit for the rest of the day after seeing it. This is the movie we wanted in the 90s and we finally got it 30 yrs later. Crazy.
The main villain is literally Bowser as Jack Black and I was all for it. This is my favorite interpretation of Bowser. Just a big doofus with a lot of power. My theater was dying at all his scenes.
When they started talking about what was the start of when Mario was getting story, they were saying around when Galaxy was doing it. I think Mario 3 was when they started building story with Mario because it was the first Mario that had dialog when you finished the the boss of that level that gave some story of what was going on.
Aside from the fact that, sure, many of the people who worked on the movie are clearly passionate about at least the IP if not the games themselves, let's not kid ourselves. Nintendo has been breathing down illumination's neck since before the movie was announced. I'm sure absolutely NOTHING was final without the express approval of Nintendo.
Great discussion guys. I don't see Peach acting like Daisy at all tho. They pulled her moves from SMB2 and Super Princess Peach in the obstacle course and we've seen her competitive side in games like Strikers. Daisy has a different personality imo and she's much louder lol.
Regarding music, I felt the Sonic 2 movie had two missed opportunities in particular, one more obvious than the other: 1. the snowboarding scene absolutely needed an edit of "Hard Times" by The Jetzons for obvious Ice Cap Zone reasons instead of the generic overly orchestral thing that it had; 2. the dance-off scene in the Russian bar should've used "Wild, Wild West" by the Escape Club for Sonic & Tails instead of "Uptown Funk" because it actually sounds like Metropolis Zone and a sped-up Hill Top Zone both from the Sonic 2 Genesis game.
Just watched it today. Super fun watch because I grew up playing Mario games. From a film perspective it's really not that great. The plot was like a puzzle with scattered pieces everywhere. The best thing they did with the film was making Peach a warrior and not a damsel in distress.

I feel like most good kids movies are movies made for all ages that kids can enjoy, when I feel like this is the first one in a while that is an actual kids movie made for kids, with the enjoyment for adults coming solely from fan service and visuals. Not to say it kakes it a bad movie, I was hype throughout the entire thing, but i will say there was definitely a lack of character moments and a lot of ideas of character arcs that seem half-baked if you are looking at it as a story. Its still an amazing mario movie, i just think it also could have been much more
I agree with this. There is a pervasive idea that because Mario is a stock character in the games, giving him emotional depth is impossible or a betrayal of his character. I don’t think that is true. They obviously made some half-hearted attempt to flesh out a characterization and emotional struggle for Mario and Peach. I just thought they could’ve gone a bit deeper. It would’ve given more reason to care than just “I’ve been playing as them since I was a baby.”
Mario is Nintendo biggest Ip, so making a movie with that IP had the best chances of doing great. As much as I'd want a Starfox movie, it's more of a risk for them. An Illumination made Starfox movie can work, but are they willing to take that chance? Metroid, imo, would have to be live action and be R-rated. Metroid is all about atmosphere, so it might have to be shot like a horror movie. Samus slowly gets her armor through the movie or something. And then there's Zelda. I'd argue that Zelda would be the hardest movie to pull off of the bunch. Especially since they should not make Link talk at all and Zelda is going to have to be caught by Ganon for most of the movie. I wouldn't want an Illumination made Zelda, but it would depend on which version of Link they use. Link to the Past might be the best one to pull from, saving Ocarina of time's scenario for the sequel or something. Ocarina of time would have to be 2 movies. One with young link, the sequel with adult link. As much as I'd want 3rd party characters to show up in a Smash Bros movie, I think the first movie should only have Nintendo characters. And yes, we should have Ryan Reynolds return as Pikachu.
Depends on the game with Peach. You play as Peach in Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Princess Peach, 3D World, Super Mario RPG, Mario Parties/Smash. So you cant say Peach is always the one getting captured or always playing the same role.
This comment is a spoiler. I feel like they missed a chance for the ending credits to be either Browser Jr showing up or showing the Koopa Kids making a plan to get Bowser out. They weren't mentioned or shown off while they had elements of all the previous Mario games. Heck, they were in the Mario cartoon, but not mentioned in the movie. Hope maybe that could be a good plot to have the Koopa Kids be the next movies villain's if they go that route.
Sorry if anyone criticizes, but thinking about the Super Mario Bros. Movie also makes me think about my currently imaginary characters a lot. I really really really wish they were no longer imaginary. I imagine Mario, Luigi, and the others meeting them. I wish they were mages named Kiemonte, Sunari, Neyla, Xavior, Gerodi, and Jalrez. I will be excited to watch the movie on late April though.

went and saw this yesterday with my dad and my take away was it’s a bad movie but a good Mario movie. there’s absolutely nothing to it, barely any plot, barely any story but it’s definitely not boring, a good kids movie i would say but nothing i will think about again until the inevitable sequel drops and i probably go and see that one with my dad too 😂
It's already been long expected that movie critics Will do whatever they can to get the clicks and the publicity. Like has any of them read the original books or even play the original games these films are from? No.
But they are movie reviewers and are doing their job by critiqueing the movie, they will love some and hate some, apparently from a bigger cinematic opinion. Movie critics aren't as happy with the movie as maybe fans who are watching it through nostalgia goggles.
Mario is a niche property. This movie is not very accessible to people who aren’t fans of the games. They aren’t going to do hours of research so they can adequately appreciate a kids movie. Critics aren’t trying to review it from the perspective of an avid gamer. They are reviewing it for John Public. People who love Mario love the Mario Movie. And there are enough of them to make it a hit. That’s all that matters. Expecting average moviegoers to love it is unreasonable.
That's just flat out wrong. RPO's novel was good, and it did a lot right that this movie did. But the RPO movie took what the novel did and thought "Oh hey if we just shove every license we own at you it'll work right" and it sure didn't.
Well it’s a better movie, worse adaptation. I rather have a okay movie that adapts to the source material beautifully than a decent movie that deviates so much from it.
@@JustBloo4356 Even in terms of plot and story and being a better overall FILM, I’d argue the first Sonic film is worse than this Mario film in that regard because the Mario movie was a simple adventure plot with a ton of cool action scenes while the first Sonic movie was also a simple but lame alien/animals enters the human world, buddy cop plot with very few action scenes and none of them are anything noteworthy.
Literally everyone in this video reviewing this movie and loving it is an adult. And as a young adult myself, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and liked it a lot. In fact, a LOT of adults liked to even LOVED this film. This isn’t a film made just for kids in mind. You don’t know what you’re even talking about.

It was very very good, I grew up on all the early Mario games since the times Donkey Kong first came to the arcades. I was on of the first kids on my block to get an NES and get the original NES Super Mario Bros. game, I even watched the Super Mario Bros cartoon. They put this movie together quite well.
