Human history is replete with both narrative and empirical evidence of dramatic healings, visitations, extraordinary human capacities, and other unexplained phenomena. Yet intellectual and scientific communities have consistently brushed aside the very existence of such events as at odds with modernity. Historian of religions Jeffrey J. Kripal returns to these universal human experiences not as superstitious detritus to leave behind or explain with science but as extraordinary signs of the very future of human knowledge. In particular, he will explore the anomalous, life-altering events experienced by scientists and medical professionals and probe the profound possibilities and understandings that might be discovered therein.

Love this! Back in the early 90"s, I was in the navy, stationed at Pearl Harbor Naval Base, working as an Ocean Systems Technician Maintainer 3rd Class at NavOceanProFac on Ford Island. I was given permission one morning, after spending all night on duty, to go back to the barracks (BEQ). While there, I became intensely, and I mean intensely, depressed, angry, and frustrated with my life; so much so, that I actually felt as if my chest would burst. Suddenly, I heard behind me a woman say, "David, you're so funny!" Shocked, I whirled around to see who was talking to me. There was no one there, It was the middle of the morning and no one was in the building. Furthermore, this a male barracks, so there was no women there. Yet, I heard this lady exactly as if she was in the room with me. A month or so later, I fell into the same state of mind while waiting for the small boat to take my co-workers and I from Ford Island back to Pearl Harbor. I was in the courtyard of the empty sick bay building, not too far from the landing where the boats docked. No one else was around, and I lay on a bench, horribly depressed. Suddenly, I heard a man say, "Ready to give it up?" Again, there was no one there, but I heard him exactly as if a man was there, talking to me. I eventually converted to Catholicism, in 1995. But I have never experienced anything like what I have written here again.

Huge thanks for booking this talk and for good audio. To those of us who've experienced the inexplicable, these stories are the tip of the iceberg. For example - and I'm sure I'm not unique - the three most extraordinary events I've experienced - and two were recorded on video - were not the result of trauma: they appeared quite out of the blue. Many folks who've had NDEs have also had subsequent STEs (spiritually transformative experiences) which ended up being more powerful and lasting than the NDEs themselves. It took decades for people to feel safe/comfortable with sharing near death experiences. I think STEs could take even longer, for obvious reasons which Dr. Kripal addressed: hubris in academia is real and the mockery extends into media. Wishes aside, it's just easier not going on stage.

I had an out of body experience without any of the typical trauma... though it was unsettling

I had a spontaneous OBE sans trauma or drugs, for that matter, and it was the most positive and extraordinary thing that ever happened to me. Perhaps it's odd that I never tried to duplicate it, but it occurred a few years after an NDE. Other STEs (spiritually transformative experiences) began to happen fairly regularly. I'm just fortunate to know folks who understood that 'these things happen' more frequently than gets reported. Peace & light.

Interesting lecture. As someone who had a psychotic break over a decade ago, PARTLY from being unable to process precognitive dreams that I was having on a daily basis, driving me to obsession... the fact I still have these dreams is no longer startling or intriguing. Why? There's nothing realistically you can do with them lol. I've written dreams in dream journals and been shocked by them playing out the next day or days... In a manner that couldn't be debunked... but when it happens now I'll just smile and think, "that was cool".

What I will say, is meditation (for me) was the gateway. I still credit it as a big part of my psychotic break as I was meditating twice a day, for hours at a time. I totally dissociated myself from my life. But it did grant me easy dream recall and clearer visions. I don't recommend it tho... I'm in awe that Buddhist Monks are able to do this daily.

I paused the video just to hit the comment section with a question to see if anyone else notices this, or if I'm just nuts. Oh, first let me say that I am thoroughly enjoying it so far, I love these talks. But what bothers me about lectures is sometimes the microphone quality is bad or just too close to the person... the annoying part to me is you can hear every little mouth noise and swallow. Once you notice it you can't help but continue to notice it. So basically I'm just curious if anybody else notices that

Oh my God I actually feel like safe to put some stuff down. I went through some demonic on stuff between 9yrs and 12yrs old and a number of other people my brothers and some friends that had stayed the night. I got really bad for a while till the first day I ran into a church and prayed I didn't get any answer I've never felt like those God in my 42 years but it went away to that point the next 6 years I lived there until I was 18 and moved out it was gone after that point but it been around I'd seen you going red eyes I've seen a black horrible form it was horrified. And since then I've had quite a number of experiences most of them aren't that bad but they're typically and it is pissed off that didn't want to be disturbed didn't want me there that's for sure. Only a couple years ago I went through some other really horrifying ones I can say it for sure there is definitely spirits and demons and that kind of thing around I've never seen anything good though or anything too much in a benign side I mean there's some some strange phenomenon I guess I can say it was benign definitely didn't feel evil like that first situation did but these situations were extremely extremely powerful that I even had stuff happening at daytime you know even in towns where there was people I mean it's strong around here I know it's cuz there's sandstone and limestone in this area there's moving water along some areas that are pretty active here a good number of rivers some even connect to rivers flow into one into my main Hometown here. Sometimes we think that might add power to the other side of things. Not sure why I have seen a lot my 42 years. Now I'm living out in the country and it is freaky out here and you feel creeps big time like you're being washed out here a lot. And I have a bedroom all the way up along the sky and I hear pretty freaky sounds from the sky at night. There's definitely things out there still a lot I could tell that much I used to not believe in things that unless I could see them.

The prefix "Super" when used in Superhuman doesn't mean beyond or outside the human, but the exceptionally human. Why not the same usage with Supernatural?
