Holy shit I knew his injury was bad but not bad enough to where they wanted to cut off his leg. Tons of respect to Smith for being able to stay calm and push through all that to make a full recovery. Insane
Alex Smith was great in 2018 for the then Washington Redskins. 6-3 is a fantastic record when facing Prime 10-6 Cowboys, and 9-7 post Superbowl Eagles. Only 1 of the other QBs Washington used that year was of NFL level play, Colt McCoy. Then He went down with a broken leg. Washington then had to use Mark Sanchez, who sucked, and then used Josh Johnson, who was OK at best. If Alex Smith doesn't get injured in 2018, they go to the playoffs.
As a kansas native, I'll always remember Alex Smith for helping to bring my beloved Chiefs back to greatness, and his mentorship of Mahomes into an MVP caliber qb will always make him a local hero. So happy to seeing him come back to the field so he can go out on his own terms.
I’m a Giants fan and the minute the Chiefs drafted Mahomes I said that’s a wrap, he went to the perfect team for him and he’s gonna be a really good player because the only things he was lacking in his game at the time were things that I knew Alex Smith could and would be willing to teach him.
It wouldn't be a waste. He achieved something nobody has or will ever achieve again. From almost dead to living his dream. He did it. Every snap is just extra credit now.
@@toomuchsauce1377 I think he should legit get it just because he made it back, like it shouldn’t even matter how he plays the fact he took a snap is incredible

I'm loving how much detail you went into whilst elaborating this heart wrenching story! You're a magnificent content creator man! Keep up the great work! I'm so happy Alex Smith can just walk & play with his children... football will come & go but his story will stand the test of time. He's a WARRIOR!! Don't even let anyone tell you.... you COULDN'T DO IT!
@@johnhatchel1372 In his career he has 35135 passing yards 196 tds I06 INT 7 playoff games 18 comebacks 22 game winning drives And personally trained Patrick mahomes in 2017 before going to the redskins/football team in 2018 which mahomes said he understood Andy Reid's gameplan easier and faster thanks to smith. Explain how he sucks
@@kevinzhu6417 It has to take an imense amount of mental fortitude, to even consoder going back to the Job that caused you so much pain. Let alone go back and want to play.
As a life long Chiefs fan I will always love Alex for coming in and helping change the culture in our locker room. The time period before we traded for him was one of the darkest in our teams history. He came in, won games, and even tho many people around town hated on him I always had an admiration for him for doing his job and winning games for us. And even when we drafted Mahomes, he still took it upon himself to mentor him and teach him how to be successful in the NFL. I will ALWAYS be an Alex Smith fan.
if he is a HOF depends on what you think a hall of fame is, if you think HOF is all about talent then, he will be quite far from making it, but in termes of a story, I don't know any one who deserves it quite as much as Alex Smith.
I knew he was morally a good guy when he never threw anyone under the bus during the Singletary era. In addition, he took time out to help search for a missing local girl.
Yeah, kc fan here too. I feel like it'd be great to sign him to a 1 year and have him finish his career with us. Definitely feel like he's most appreciated here.
Smith deserves Comeback Player of the Century. Seriously, I don't recall anyone ever coming back from an injury like that, let alone possible death. I wish nothing but the best for him. He's not the best quarterback, sure, but he's been a lot better than many quarterbacks who have taken the field during his career, and I think he's had some raw deals (including playing for Washington). I hope he finds success in another organization that can both appreciate him and take care of him. If he can come back from that, I think he's got a lot left in the tank.
As a 49ers fan I will always love and respect Alex Smith, he was the QB for my team when I first fell in love with football and for that he will always be loved.
I'm not a Washington fan, but after winning his first game back I was so elated and happy for him. My huge salute to this man not only because of his class, dedication, and love of the game but also the perseverance to stay especially when he chooses to keep his legs when there was limited option. A truly inspiring story for the generations of players!
I felt like a real dickhead when the injury happened, I remember screaming something like "And stay down! (I didn't realize how bad the hit was, at the time)" When he didn't get back up, I was like "I was just kidding, Alex; you can get up now!" I'm glad to see him back, and I wish him only the best.
I’ve read so many articles and seen so many videos on the story of Alex Smith’s injury, recovery, and comeback and every single time it brings me to tears. It is a miracle of medicine and of the human spirit and of family; he’s got himself a hell of a wife.
He's not only a great player and mentor but also an amazing human being. A longgggg time ago I met him in San Francisco for a meet and greet of players to the public and he was really smart and didn't rush anything in the conversation about his team hiring Harbaugh at the time, then a few years later I ran into him at a bbq restaurant in Kansas city and he looked at me and said "hey Greg how have you been" was kind of shocking but pretty cool too and it showed how kind and forward thinking he is. Come back player of the year Alex Smith awesome!.
You couldn't make it to the nfl with that attitude. Alex's leg is now a TARGET so a defender can put him out & collect the bounty! Yes, especially being a WHITE QB, there are bounties in the nfl.
OMG, astonishing, unbelievable human being. It inspires me after having had surgeries and find myself by myself rehabbing and remembering my football days more than 40 years ago, using those exercises like bear crawl, crab walk, climbing stairs, pushing myself. At times I wanted to sulk but after watching this great video about a great man, I have fresh inspiration. Really, thank you so very much!!!
Alex Smith finally gave us a team to root for in Washington back in 2018, and even though he has only played in 11 games for us, he may be my favorite player of ours ever
I saw this guy when I went to a St. Louis Rams game in 2011. The 49ers are big rivals but the Rams sucked that year, so 49ers players were really cocky and acted like the Rams players and the fans weren't shit. Alex Smith though was the only player I respected on that team, he was cool and respectful and I saw him have actual conversations with Rams players and didn't showboat in front of the whole crowd after he whooped our ass. Glad to see a man with that much class make a comeback because he deserves it.
When Alex Smith retires I think that the NFL should officially name the "comeback player of the year" award after him. Not only did he came back on an NFL roster (kudos to Washington for not releasing him, BTW) and played in competitive games , but he also reclaimed the number one QB spot and led his team efficiently, taking the opportunity offered by a weak division to get his team into the playoffs. Washington will probably be one and done, but the fact that Smith could get back to the level of a decent starting NFL QB is absolutely IN-CRE-DI-BLE.
The insane amount of respect that I have for this guy is immeasurable he came back from what looked like he got chewed on by jaws and still came back so glad he could pull through
i teared up when he was in the snap, knowing the pain he must have gone through just to play another snap of football. what a legend most people can't do that, hell almost no one in the league could do that so that would basically be a superbowl title to him and his family. btw im not a redskins fan i've been a chiefs fan i'm not a bandwagon but when i saw that i really did feel bad for him.
I've always dealt with weight issues ever since I was little and always told myself that because of those issues I'd never be able to live out my childhood dream of becoming a pro wrestler. Alex Smith inspires me to go for it. If this man can go through all that and still manage to take the field, then I know I can overcome my struggles. God bless you Alex and God bless the Redskins/Washington!
Alex Smith was the first NFL jersey I ever had. Seeing this video makes me remember one of the best Halloween’s ever, when I was Alex Smith 8 years ago, I was in 4th grade. Glad to learn about his story, and know he’s doing great.
I had a bad knee injury and returned to play the following year. Alex had a shattered leg and I was shocked to see him return. He's one gutsy dude. I honor this warrior!!
I really love that you decided to shed light on a positive story. Too many channels are just annoyingly snarky and mocking and dont give credit when it's due.
I know no man more disserving of glory in american football than Alex Smith. I hope that he keeps inspiring people to rally and overcome challenges for many more years.
Smith should of just got cpoty when he made the 53 man roster. The fact he played and had Aaron Donald on his back testing the strength of his leg made me winch in pain. Hope everything goes well for him and Dak also 🙏 🙏🙏
And obviously he won Comeback player of the year. Congratulations Alex, you've earned it about as much as one possibly can. This man is a freaking warrior. When I watched as he stepped back on the field, I legitimately rose and applauded.
Here after Alex Smith's retirement. Sad to see him go like this, but he still had an amazing career and the most amazing comeback from injury Ive ever seen. Have a happy retirement, you deserve it
I broke My fibia and tibia when I was ten playing football. Never played again due to the psychological fear. So Alex Smith coming back after HIS incredible recovery... Just.... RESPECT!
Seeing the leg injury outcome sustained by Smith recalls an equally devastating leg injury sustained by Joe Theismann (QB) of another (yet the same) NFL Washington Team of decades past. Alex Smith inspires many by his displayed determination for accomplishment in athletic excellence. Rock on!
Amazing that Smith came back. Never thought it would happen. Though, I can't imagine how bad J.J. Watt felt about the whole thing, especially since Smith almost died or lost the leg. That would be the kind of thing that would haunt a player.
I never been more impressed with someone . When i seen that doc on what happened to his leg after the operation and he said he would play again i was blown away . And we know the flesh eating bacteria came from the hospital not the field . If you haven't seen the doc , watch it . He had no leg left , he had about a inch thick of calf and that's it . Walking again is amazing , running and playing is unreal .
