The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Can’t still believe Mary’s gone now, too. 😔 Observe her carefully: She always watched the ladies on either side of her in their live performances to make sure where everybody was, what they were doing, and that the 3 of them had it together. ❤️

Notice at 01:53 how Mary extends her arm behind Diana to make sure she's in place as Diana moves back into the lineup. Once Diana is back in position Mary drops her arm.

That’s amazing, well spotted Jay Nix! Yes, they were certainly in sync.... these girls knew each other since teenagers in the projects, it’s nice to see how they functioned as one unit, and sad to think how Flo and Mary are no longer with us. I feel that Diana Chooses to ignore the fact that without the Supremes she would not have had the success that she has had without them. If she just came out as a solo artist she would not have done as well. To be honest when she went solo her music didn't chart to well, she didn't have back-to-back hits like with the Supremes. Well, I guess you can say when Flo got fired and it turned to Diana Ross and the Supremes they were going downhill. I'm just saying that if it was up to her, she would only talk about her career from 1970 up to now! She really doesn't give the supreme days too much recognition. Nowhere close to the way Mary did!

@@rondothard1698 Give me a break...nobody would know who the Supremes were if it wasn't for Diana Ross she was the Supremes. The only thing that was interesting about Mary and Flo was their association with Diana Ross who would have been a star with any two other girls or as a solo....It was her voice on their 12 # one hits that makes the group the greatest American group of all time...Diana Ross...

@@Maatization remember the supremes out sold her until Jean left. Berry and the promotion is what made her. Berry was not going to let anyone out do her. Martha and Gladys were way better singers but Berry didn’t promote them the same way. Brenda Holloway was killer looked better sounded better but some how he didn’t do much with her. Diana is a messy one and every body will tell you. She knows how to play the game. Notice that you never see her on stage with other divas her voice can’t hang!

I saw them sing “More” live in concert. Simply magnificent. You could hear a pin drop in the packed arena. They were headed to the Copa and were touring to test out the Copa playlist. This was just one of the several standards they interspersed among their hits. Irresistible vocals.

This isn't really the original Supremes. There was a 4th girl, Barbra Martin, whose voice is on some of their earlier songs though they rarely posed for photos with her. After she was married and got pregnant she left the group (or was more likely asked to leave) and they never replaced her.

This was May 1st, 1966. They had just finished singing the rockin’ “Love is Like an Itching in my Heart”, which reached number nine on the pop charts, and then segued into the classic standard, “More”. Only The Supremes could perform a rollicking dance song like “Itch” and then perform “More”, a ballad from the American Song Book, without missing a beat. They recorded “More” and other standards on their previously unreleased masterpiece album, “There’s a Place for Us”. The album is available now and has been for several years. It’s a must if you like when they sing as a group. I love when they sing in unison and they show off their beautiful harmonies.

Amazing performance. Notice Mary leaves her arm extended so Diana can smoothly rejoin the lineup after stepping into the spotlight for her solo part. 01:54- 02:01 I suspect it is sung live by all 3. There is wide shot of the performance with 3 overhead microphones. Had Mary and Florence's vocals been pre-recorded, it's not likely they would have been heard so well. In the last few lines of the song Florence and Mary are clearly heard if not overpowering Ross. If pre-recorded they would have been turned down so Ross could be heard above them. Of course none of us were there and can't verify exactly what was done.

Beautifully sung classic American song. Its not easy to make music this exceptionally refined while maintaining the vocal power and complex orchestration. But thats why they were and remain America's most successful female music group not by a little but by a mile. They also established a standard of sophisticated elegance still unsurpassed. But none of it by accident as behind it all was the brilliant vision and production management of Motown's Berry Gordy.

The Supremes were an American girl group and a premier act of Motown Records during the 1960s. Founded as the Primettes in Detroit, Michigan, in 1959, the Supremes were the most commercially successful of Motown's acts and the most successful American vocal band, with 12 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Most of these hits were written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland-Dozier-Holland. It is said that their breakthrough made it possible for future African-American R&B and soul musicians to find mainstream success. Billboard ranked the Supremes as the 16th greatest Hot 100 artist of all time. Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, the original members, were all from the Brewster-Douglass public housing project in Detroit. They formed the Primettes as the sister act to the Primes (with Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks, who went on to form the Temptations). Barbara Martin replaced McGlown in 1960, and the group signed with Motown the following year as the Supremes. Martin left the act in early 1962, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson continued as a trio. During the mid-1960s, the Supremes achieved mainstream success with Ross as lead singer and Holland-Dozier-Holland as its songwriting and production team. In 1967, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross & the Supremes, and replaced Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. In 1970, Ross left to pursue a solo career and was replaced by Jean Terrell, and the group reverted the name to the Supremes again. During the mid-1970s, the lineup changed with Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne and Susaye Greene, joining until the group, after 18 years from its foundation, disbanded in 1977. Source Wikipedia

I'm sorry to be a rather lonely contrarion amongst all the lavish praise found in the comments. I've been a Supremes fan since the 1960s (I am old as dirt) but I think that this song was a poor fit for them. They did what they could with it, but it feels more like Vegas cabaret instead of that classic, glorious Motown sound I love.
