In April, 8, 1968, Diana Ross and The Supremes visit The Tonight Show, to sing: Somewhere, from West Side StoryDiana was rushed to learn the spoken part of the song, but, as expected, she forgot the lyrics, and tried to improvise. Only Diana sat on the couch to have a conversation with Johnny, what I think that's wrong, because the "SUPREMES" were Mary and Cindy, then it would be logical they sit down to talk too, I think that was the work of Berry, that's all ...

I understand the emotion, but what an injustice to The Supremes & the fans though.. Ms Wilson's & Cindy's voices pulled back on purpose, to spotlight the lead singer,, not sitting with the host to be part of the interview. Wow, how hurtful. But, it's not Ms. Ross' fault. What a disappointment about the whole thing. At the time, there must have been a lot of people bummed not to get to see them all together being interviewed & heard clearly. Oh well,, time heals.. No one is right & no one is wrong,, it just was..

Gordy was behind this plot to denigrate Mary and Cindy's role and make it appear that Miss Ross was the only one that mattered in the group. Just 10 months prior to this April 1968 show, Mary, Florence and Diana sat on the panel with Johnny. In June 1967, , Flo was escorted out of the Flamingo in Las Vegas by Gordy's goons and exiled forever to oblivion in Detroit ....Mary knew that if she spoke out she would be next. Lesson to be learned...do not get in Miss Ross's or Gordy's way or you will meet the same fate as Flo. After all, Gordy needed Miss Ross to give her phony fake speech about how sad was about Martin Luther King's assassination.

@@jackanthony976seriously?? Flo was escorted out because she was drunk!! Diana had nothing to do with that. If you’re going to share what happened, then at least share the truth

This was before the TCB gowns were made. They wore the black gowns from Forever came today.

I saw this show the group wore their street clothes and the atmosphere in the country was solemn and uncertain to say the least. This performance was impromptu and designed to quell the violence that was taking place around the country and to pay tribute to Dr. King.

I think Miss Diana Ross did a wonderful and beautiful job. She may have messed up the lines but when she spoke from her heart it was such a beautiful and heart wrenching speech. You can tell she was not rehearsed to say what she said. She was 24 at the time and she said a lot of profound things. I've read the transcript of this before and it never hit me until I heard that sleepy, sad, and tender voice of beauty share her emotions with the country. She should be very proud of herself today looking back at how she handled this awful situation with dignity, grace, and love. Bravo Miss Ross.

Yes - it was a grave disappointment. It was the first time on a talk show that Mary and Cindy were banished during the interview. The curtain just closed on them after the song. It felt insulting and unnecessary - and Gordy never realized that these choices made a lot of people hate Ross. And that's a shame.

The date is wrong. It wasn't April 8. MLK was killed April 4th and this Tonight Show episode was the next day, April 5th.

One of the most powerful, poignant performances. One can actually feel the collective sadness in Johnny's voice, the Supremes' voices (particularly Diana's incredibly vulnerable performance and interview), and the band. Very moving. Thank you for this.

I read that all of Carson's shows shot between 1965 and 1972 were destroyed or taped over by an incompetent staff member. Any footage you see of Johnny's shows between 1965 and 1972 are the courtesy of those who somehow managed to tape the show on their own or acquire the tape on the down low.

JACK ANTHONY Actually most Tonight Shows from 1962 to 1972 were “wiped.” A method used by NBC in which they erased the shows so the tapes could be used again for other things. It was a very common practice the networks did in those days. If anyone would have a copy of this show, it would be Motown.
