Vic Limited I have huge doubts. Racism, sexism, alcoholism. I think it was for people who are 50-70 who were young during that time. Rose tinted glasses
@Robotica No right-wing fake "Conservatives" are the ones who claim to be the moral authority. You guys have failed at EVERYTHING. And the fact you give your children less means nothing to you because you never knew anything better.
are you sure it was an act? they say it was cause what else you gonna say? i believe it was rumored as such to cover up that fact that he was truly an alcoholic....I mean, how else does one promote this? it's great stuff, don't get me wrong...and tons o people fell for it...but was it an act really? lol...I guess we'll really never know....lol
"Those close to Dean, though, knew it was just apple juice - Martinelli brand apple juice to be exact - and the drunk, slurred speech was all an act. And though he commanded attention on stage, off stage he wasn't much for chitchat and was a loner at heart."
Jack Kramer. In his heyday of Martin and Lewis and the clubs it was all largely an act, if not completely. Later in life he did start to drink very heavily and life imitated art. For the most part of his notable career though it was all an act. He drank apple juice or lemonade and took sips.
@@patriceaqa288 Great reply Patrice. Dean was a pro. Definitely a party animal too. It was probably that mix, and the historical popularity of the comedy drunk, that inspired his on-stage persona. No one could be that perfectly on-cue if they were actually as drunk as he was pretending to be, but it is also true that no one could be that accurate in their portrayal without getting embarrassingly drunk in their personal life. He played this pitch-perfect. It was only entertainment in its day, but this qualifies as real art in the long-view.
In Las Vegas they have a bar with plaque “The Rat Pack drank here” and that’s not exaggeration. In Old Vegas the stars would perform & then go to the bars afterwards.
He wasn't drunk, he was hamming it up, it gave him a persona after he split with Jerry. Almost everyone that knew him, from his daughter to his dearest friends all said the same thing. Even Frank Sinatra claimed he had spilled more alcohol than Dean had drunk in his life. It was only in his later years that he drank. He had health issues, had lost his beloved son,was depressed and socially withdrawn and likely very lonely.
Yeah I loved watching Dean perform and LOVED his voice. No matter what song he sung you ALWAYS recognized Deans voice. One n a million. I wasn’t really a Frank fan but I’d listen to Dean sing anything.
took my mother from england to vegas to see him He fell off the stage into her lap She never forgot told all her old friends back in england I think it was one of the highlites of her life
Well that's make anyone's day. Mind to if Dean had fallen on me I would have needed Frank's Security to peel me off the seat. I'm 5' and ,7 stone. Still would have been some fun. You could have had Elvis land on her.
Are you from the future I’m from the past I’ve had a gameboy since 1989 and there’s a timemaCCH-062584-00bc2094ad-𐩻𐩽𐩾ꓱ 𐎩ᆭ𐁙𐎥𐭰𒊹𐬿𐬳‑‖⚫︎but it’s broken and I can’t find anybody out there who is from the future and has the parts to fix it!!!! I WANT TO GET OUT OF HERE TOO!
I am Nobody yeah alls we have on late night talk shows today are actors and singers that are politically correct self-important social justice warriors. Nah I'd rather have the Rat Pack i.e. Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis jr.. and they mentioned here Angie Dickinson. I'd take any one of those being a little tipsy on a talk show than what we have today. So stop being so snarky and self-righteous in your comment.
It's a shtick. He's not actually that drunk. Also, talk shows were heavily scripted back then. Jimmy Kimmel was one of the first comedy talk shows to break the scripted mold.
Love the cigs and the drink…CLASSIC…obviously I’m a baby of the 60’s. My mom couldn’t get on the telephone without a cigarette and a cup of coffee/glass of wine.🤷♀️
@@yoyoma17 I don't understand why people say that Dean Martin wasn't a drunk? Clearly, you can see a drunk Dean Martin. Is always about apple juice. I mean, I really don't care that Dean Martin was drunk. He had the ability to make you feel like he was not a drunk. I have seen plenty of drunk men that were in any kind of condition to function as well as Dean Martin. Those drunk men were falling down drunks. However, Dean Martin was a drunk but he could handle his drinking, unlike those drunks always starting a fight, they couldn't handle their drinking, as well as Dean Martin, did. He was a lovable drunk and everyone loved Dean Martin, he drank like a fish. I really wish that Dean Martin could be My Boyfriend. I always have loved older men.
Yep, Foster Brooks was the man, I don't think he could do a television show without getting complaint about being drunk. He tore up Dean, Rickles and everyone else when he roasted them.
@@LoudValves Loved Foster Brooks. Always enjoyed that first appearance he made where the others on the how didn't know him or his act, and they thought he was actually drunk. And the roasts are great, of course.
Your very fortunate and I'm a 36 year old but I love the retro shows and films ,simply the best 👏👏😇🙏🙏🙏 Everyone seemed soo innocent back then and more youthful than now in days
Well did you actually expect it to be the same with a different host? Who would want that? That's the beauty of the show, the tradition of each host making it their own and then passing the torch. It's sad when people get so wrapped up in what they're comfortable with that they can never learn to appreciate new things.
Capitan Futuro you know your name is spelled wrong right? Captain. It’s captain. I’m glad you boomers are finally almost out the door because Johnny Carson is so painfully one dimensional that you have to be a mouth breathing, lead paint chip eating numbskull to think the Carson show was anything more than a gimmicky shtick
I just love Dean Martin, how could anyone not love him? Everything that Dean Martin did was fabulous. He could sing, act, and also a great comedian. Frank Sinatra couldn't even hold a candle to the very charismatic Dean Martin......... R.I.P. Dean Martin....... 🍷 💛 🍷..............
I remember seeing a very drunk Peter Falk on Johnny's show. Carson stops him, picks up his coffee cup, and says to Peter Falk, "You're not drinking from my cup are ya Peter?"
Foster Brooks. And Dean wasn't really that good, he was just a cliche character and naturally was a good setup for some awesome, real comics like winters and rickles.
Joshua Davis cant compare, all those guys were different and unique. Rickles for example was mainly a comedian where Dean was a singer. One thing for sure all those guys did a lot of things good.
I was born 1960. my mother had this on tv and I quietly soaked it up and possessed sophisticated humor by age 12 because of them and am grateful for them. 🌺
Dino was such a great guy. I had a pass back-stage several times when the gang was having dinner, and Dino was always one of the first to leave the party and go home. Frank's nickname for Sammy was "Smokey" because Sam smoked about 4 packs of cigarettes a day, Dino smoked a lot also and both of them succumbed to lung disease. Sammy also drank a lot and was treated for cirrhosis but it was the smoking and throat cancer that ended his life as it did with Dino, who had emphysema. Frank rarely smoked but often had a cigarette as a prop, but he didn't inhale much of the time, and he constantly kept his breathing passages open by practicing holding his breath under water in his pool. Great old days, none of which we'll ever see again in the entertainment business, no one can successfully imitate them or even have all the fun the guys had, teasing and riding each other raw! Sure, they had a falling out occasionally, as all friends do, but in the end, they all admired each other's tremendous talents! RIP to them all, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis,Jr., Peter Lawford, aka "The Summit" as they called themselves! We'll never see that caliber of entertainment again!
TheAmbSteve, I couldn't agree more, I think the ones who think its bad etc they just can't stand the fact that we could make decisions for ourselves we didn't have the government telling us how to live and what to do.
Dean Martin was a comedian and this was all a brilliant well played act. Dean Martin would do this all the time. Cheers to Dean Martin and all the laughter he brought us. THIS WAS REAL LATE NIGHT TELEVISION, UNLIKE THE IDIOTS OF TODAY.
His kids say that drunk act, was just what it was, an 'act' , he was hilarious in a layed back way, Dean could sing, dance, an make people happy. There was no party or fun till Dean walked in. He loved his family for sure 👍
@@abrahamlincoln1677 I also believe that he drank his share. I did read in a Sinatra bio that two guys paid 25K to play golf with Frank and Dean. One of them claimed that they were so drunk it was an embarrassment. Of course they were not young at the time but from the life they lived you know they did something.
Yes, what you say is true. From the Los Angeles Times in '95, after he died: More than one guest on his phenomenally popular television variety show, which regularly attracted 40 million viewers from 1965 to 1974, went to Martin’s dressing room after the show expecting to find a paralytic drunk only to be offered coffee and cake. The glass that Martin carried onstage usually contained nothing stronger than apple juice. “You son of a bitch,” one guest said, cracking up the joke-loving star, “you’re stone-cold sober!”
People who worked with Dean said he didn't drink while performing and did his work with a lot of integrity, taking the work seriously. To do a show while being drunk would be unprofessional and disrespectful to the people who paid to come see him. So he stayed in control enough to play with everyone's gullibility. He was a very sharp gentleman.
Johnie and Bob looked sort of confused/worried but they were playing to his skit i think. i dont care if he was drunk or not. he was slinging the chuckles like wedding rice.
@@davidm9618 Yeah, Sinatra said alot of stuff. You ever see his testimony about his organized crime connections? Its here on yt. He said alot of stuff there too. Good ol' Frank 'Grain of Salt' Sinatra.
@@Kee2Oz "His testimony" meaning Dean's or Frank's involvement in the Mafia? Not sure what your point is. Yeah, talking about a friend's drinking is equal to Witness Protection testimony. LOL.
Frank, Dean, Sammy, Hope, Rickles, Lewis, Dangerfield and so many back in the 70s and 80s was priceless. True classy entertainers who never were profane.
I read where Frank Sinatra was pissed that Dean had all the funny lines and he had the straight ones. They reversed the roles or lines, yet Dean still got all the laughs. Supposedly Frank got pissed off at that!
@@FlipsideJr I think Letterman was pretty good, but I dont think the kids think much of modern talk show hosts, ratings are really bad. Talk shows today only get a fraction of the ratings they did in Carson's time. TV ratings have collapsed totally, RU-vid channels get more viewers than talk shows.
A confused Dean wondering "how'd everybody get in my room?" was a staple of his act for decades. That anybody could confuse that for ad libbing shows the basic cornball nature of the Vegas greats, including the Rat Pack, whose writers understood the audiences who flocked there.
And entertainers perceived image is what sell tickets no different than Jonathan winters outrageous antics or even Robin Williams insane comedy routine they were constant performers as soon as the camera went off they acted perfectly normal , when the camera was on they did Whatever it took to make money either act like a clown or a drunk, That's the way it is in the entertainment business, And if they convince you that there Insane or a drunk They have done their job
@Stella Rocquie That's probably why Carson lets him do it (fake or not). Being an alcoholic is sad. There's nothing funny about it, after the laughing (which is usually a cover for something else) stops.
@@felixniederhauser7799 this clip was maybe but not that one...also his eyes were too red... Be respectful.... I guess tyson said it right... Social media made you all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it.”
Talk shows were marketed to a different (older) crowd in those days, times have changed and the industry had to change to survive. Also, remember that the reason these shows came on at 10:00 PM was because the content was a little edgier for an older audience where bits like this would be appreciated. Admittedly, Jimmy Fallon has tons of talent and does some hilarious bits that Carson, Leno and Letterman could have done if they just had the creative energy or the audience for it. Some of Leno's interviews in the last 5 years have pretty much told the story about how little he enjoyed filling the Tonight Show with lower level talent who were there to pitch some mediocre movie or mediocre album while they really lacked any substantial talent to warrant Tonight Show couch time. The music, film, comedic and arts industry has changed for the worse over the last couple of decades, and I wouldn't expect to see it change back anytime soon. Remember when SNL sketch comedy actors were referred to as "not ready for prime time" guess what, there prime time talent now.
My God. Can you imagine - all of them together living it up and having a good time where ever they are. God bless them. They gave us so much happiness and laughter.
Three icons at once is a real treat. This era was very special and will never be matched in the future. I saw Dean at The Megem years ago and I still remember how classy he was that night.
there's no way that Dean Martin was drunk as he was.so realistic and achievable plus take.note what he says about the poker. and gambling a drunk person.wouldnt know how to answer any of these questions know he's got all his marbles where a drunk would just fall off the chair let's be honest he's just a quick witted and a wonderful Singer with a fantastic sence of Humour.. just a brilliant performer thanks heaps Dean Martin you will always be a fantastic guy X X X

@@anderander5662 Yes, Johnny was heard to say more than once about his cigarettes; "I wish I could quit these things, they're killing me!" And sadly, Johnny died of emphysema. That's not an easy way to go, not being able to get a full breath of air, coughing, feeling rotten, but cigs were thought to be part of being "cool" from about the 1920's when women started smoking them, to about the time people finally realized they were killing a lot of people, their friends. So smoking did decrease some this century, but not enough, it's still killing people who had a long-time habit from the 20th century.
If Dean Martin is drunk, he has the smoothest, most faultless delivery of almost constant one liners ever seen. Do your research people, Dean's act is one of the most well known in all entertainment.
NancyDrewe I don’t know. He really was very talented, but I suspect he didn’t think he was. He didn’t think he was an original singer; he thought that his style was too much like Crosby’s. I don’t think it was. I guess he started that drunk routine and kept at it. By this time, he wasn’t interested in rehearsing for his show, so maybe any flubs in lines could be covered up with this drunk act. And people thought it was funny. Just a guess, of course.
@@ECP90 There's an interview I saw and he said he never drinks on TV and it's an act. I don't remember if he said he doesn't drink ever or not. Richard the family feud guy was thought to be drunk but he has never had even a sip of alcohol in his life
I'm glad to have lived in those times when freedom was real. This brings back great great memories of what it feels like to be an American. I hope it comes back for all the younger people so they can know the feeling
Those who worked with him acknowledge that while he drank, he was rarely actually drunk, it was mostly an act. The scotch was usually iced tea and the gin tonic was just tonic. Such a talent.
The best part of this clip is all the comments defending Dino, lol! Yes, a real fan of the man knows he wasn't actually drunk by this point in his life. I just love all the people swooping in to defend his honour. Does my heart good!
Yes Dean had a great time playing the drunk ,what an act he had drinking apple juice on stage .How could a drunk man be that quick with his wit ,I certainly have never experienced that in my life ❤️☘️
Loved Dean Martin. He was a natural and could do it all. Even in this video he's holding himself together. Haven't watched Tonight Show for many years because it's lost it's glow.
It is known that Dean was actually acting. Appearing as a boozer was part of the image he wanted to show, just to add a touch of humor to his public appearances.
it would be silly to think he never got hammered with his lifestyle. I just think he was careful not to go to excess and function well most of the time.
My favorite singer in Swing.... And I love his Westerns The Sons of Katie Elder.. Rio Bravo.. Five Card Stud.. and Rough Night in Jericho. RIP. Dean.. 🙏
Imagine being Dean, with that persona and all the celebrity/hubris that comes with it, at that particular time and place.... Could actually 'stand' before a live audience and play off the fact that he was absolutely hammered. Like he was joking about it. And somehow it was all an act. This guy is the ultimate drunk. Forever, never to be repeated.
From an LA Times article...A few years ago, I chatted with his daughter Deanna Martin, who is also a singer, about her dad. She noted that the whole "Dino" personality was a gimmick. "When he started to redo his nightclub act, he started at the Sands Hotel and had some writers helping him," she said. "It was like Jack Benny who had the violin thing and made fun about being cheap. Dad was so handsome, so debonair. They just thought, 'We'll put a drink in his hand and a cigarette.' Every man wanted to be him, and every woman wanted to be with him." The truth of the matter, she said, was her father was swigging apple juice and not liquor when he performed. "He would be home for dinner every night," Martin said. "He would come home, and he and mom would have their one cocktail at the bar. He was kind. He was so different from what everybody thought he was. There was no one who could do Dean Martin better than Dean Martin."
First time I saw this I was drunk and thought that he was drunk too. I remember saying, "if he can be drunk and be rich and famous, why not me?" Great entertainers and lifelong favorites of mine are Johnny and all the rest of these guys, even Dean!
I love Dean. I miss him. He's soooo cute. Those definitely were the good ol' days. Wish we could have these times again. Thanks for uploading. Nobody today like these celebrities back then.
The people who missed it will never know... the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson was worth staying up for. And back when getting drunk was still funny, Dean Martin was one of the best guests on the show.
@@exterminator_1986 I'm on about the change of humor and what was once acceptable, but is now considered to be in bad taste. I'm surprised that someone would need to explain it to you.
@@ryangauger6240 True. I often think of all the people whose career was based on drunk humor, which was funny at the time, but in bad taste now. People like Foster Brooks. Not aw well known, but Dick Van Dyke's brother, Jerry McCord Van Dyke had a similar routine based on being drunk. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sTqdYnmRnBA.html
Dean didn't get drunk, that's well known. It was just a schtick. He liked golfing almost more than he liked entertaining, and so he kept himself in good shape; up every morning early to golf. And as he pointed out himself, you don't get to be the highest paid entertainer in the world at one time -- if you're a drunk. He had to work too hard for what he achieved.
Yes, comedic genius. Always loved Dean: 1) He's my parents' age, 2) He's from nearby "Sutupidville", a city that put food on my table and kept Dad employed.
