Nice review of SIPs. We are building a home on the water in Nova Scotia in the future, and with the climate becoming more volatile, looking at SIPS or ICF over conventional stick framing.

@@baileylineroad Yes, on slab, one story, four corners and a shed style sloped roof. Simple but open to take advantage of the water and sunset views!

How does retrofitting plumbing or electrical in existing construction work with SIPs? Is it even possible to do something like install a new outlet, or remodel a kitchen and move the sink?

You get channels that run along the surface of the panels, so you don't put them into the panels, which actually makes it easier to modify later compared to running electrical or plumbing through the walls of a conventional stick frame. Even with a stick frame home, if you live in an area that gets below freezing, you wouldn't run plumbing through an exterior wall anyway due to the chance of freezing. With a timber frame, or plain SIP panel home, you actually have greater ability to remodel within the existing frame later. Adding additions or removing space may be more difficult though.

Much simpler to do anything at all than stick built . Plum , wire, cable you name it piece of cake . I love my 2010 Sips home . Cheap to keep , air condition / heat strong went through last years hurricane like nothing at all happened. I lost one piece of facia trim board. My neighbors were totally amazed . My nick name for a while was one piece. My neighbors had real losses my Sips home almost perfect. No more stick built crap for me.

I built a sips home in 2010 . Best decision I ever made. I wanted a home with great R value , basically hurricane proof , low maintenance. The home preforms brilliantly and survived last years hurricane losing one facia trim board . Many if my neighbors suffered tens of thousands in damage . Those homes were built to Florida code at about the same time. So yeah imo I think stuck built sucks , when compared to Sips. Much less build time , square , level, plum as can be . I used hardy board siding exterior . Besides I don’t think the crazy systems used new to get the r values in stick built homes now days.

is this inner white stuffing not eaten by ants termites or other critters because this inner filling can be destroyed by carrion, ants, termites, other animals

Ive been researching sips and they have some good benefits. However, obs is crap. Its horrible on sips and if you have any air leakage, you are in trouble, big trouble. Look up the problems with sips. They may be fine for 10 years...then after 10.years of expansions and contraction, the joints start leaking air, and the osb rots and fails. It can be like rebuilding your entire house in 25 years or less, especially on roofs! Its because osb is such a horrible building material. Now metal or other substrates are possible but i dont.know pricing and they may not be cost effectuve. Be careful folks. Look up all the sips failures and horror stories first before choosing sips with osb!!

I love my 2010 North Floria sips home .zero problems, cheap to heat and cool, quiet, strong . No more stick built crap for me . Square , level , plum , solid no air movement . Btw stick built stuffs contracts and expands as much or more . OSB is awesome material stable , rot resistant , insect resistant .

@ytSuns26 um, osb is not stable and a good choice. ANY moisture or air and your screwed.
