Interesting, both what you said and the woman in the vid. My Dad was from Vienna and Salzburg, Austria. During the war. They left, lived in Shanghai for some time, and then to the USA, in the 1950's. @@johnmarengo3988 I understand, my grandparents moved into a house in vienna mid of the 1950ies. Before the war it was owned by a jewish family, some of them could flee, some not. Some could escape to Shanghai. I see the first steps of the Holocaust as a betrayal. By the government, by friends and neighbours. I think this trauma can last for many decades and can influence whole societies. I did a little research on this family from my childhood home, it´s interesting but also sad. My parents generation experienced violence through their parents. So i guess we inherit some forms of violence.

They only are friends from school since young and hobbies, or whatever context where people see each other very often. Once studies are done, and we work, people don't make friends with other people even in hobbies, I experience it myself. Everyone just come and go as soon as classes are done. At school, we see people all the time all day, in adult life, we work all day and hobbies people apparently stay hobbies people that's sad. I've tried several times to be open and speak to people but they are really close minded when it comes to be friend with strangers outside their circle that already existed. For people who lost friends, or got betrayal, abandoned or whatever reasons and got no one reliable anymore, it's very hard to approach others. I have been meeting new people the past decades. But no one last because they are either judgemental, or there was once a girl i met in a bar, she said I need to "take a test" with one of her friend and talking to her and that "if I pass, she will present me to her other friends gang". Like what the hell, are we supposed to pass test to get to know people? Lol. And this girl i met I was meeting someone else and she interrupted it and I found her funny that's why i asked we exchange number to hang out. Turns out she's not that nice, she also judged my life easily since she hasn't experienced the bad things i had. Anyway people are always like this I just cut it off after several times of seeing disrespectful words from her. Not everyone is like this but I met bunch of people who were nice, turning out weird and close minded. If you don't make the effort to make the first move, no one will. I've always made the first contact and sometimes it's tiring. Lately I've again made first contact with 2 people, a girl in my dance class , who i never talked to during whole year (because last year I made an effort but there was a girl who used me as a bridge to talk to other people I was talking to, she also was weird and not assuming her choices I got annoyed she was disrespectful and not honnest), there was a show for the class in last June, I had the opportunity to speak to her so I did. We had fun, I just talk for getting to know her because I was like "funny we've never talked all year so let's talk now while we wait". I , again, decided to make the first move and search her on Facebook, send a message to say it was fun and if she wants we can hang out. Turned out it was mutual so we met twice and until now it's been going good. Making the first move all the time is always tiring in the sense that, why people don't make the first move ever in my situation ? Because simply they have already their friends usually and "dont feel the need to grow their friends circle". Even on reddit of my country, the people who ask for friends also say the exact same "they want to meet new people because they are bored or just want to grow their circle they already have, otherwise they just don't want to grow it" We don't need thousands of friends for sure, but they are people like me who were hit by abandonment, betrayal, lies and decided to cut off with the bad people. It's better to be alone than with bad people who mistreat us. What I thought was a pro to make the first move is that I get to "choose" who I hang out with. It's my decision and then I just see if it goes on well or not. Another guy i met during afternoon of guitar lesson, he's younger than me a few years but he seems nice, though there are some traits that bother me a little, like being late for meeting up and saying nothing by text, or not saying sorry for being so late (more than 40 minutes sometimes). not everyone is perfect of course. But i just hope being like this is not a habit, because myself I say sorry when I'm late and send message saying I'm on my way. That's just politeness. These 2 people I hang out recently, it's only beginning. Both already have their friends. I just took the chance to speak to them more than in the context of hobby and turns out we could get along. I'll see in the next months haha I think it's cultural here. But also the way society works. Everyone is tired because of work, people just wanna go home after hobbies ,which I understand , but people really litterally run to exit when time's o clock. The Belgian are comfortable in their own life, circle of friends. They usually don't see the need to meet new people if they already have their own friends from childhood or teenager or university high school. What i state is true unfortunately because redditors and other forums confirm the struggle to make new friends with Belgian. They feel rejection, loneliness and such. Btw I may ask the girl I see if she's ever realized why herself never talked to anyone after lessons. It seems like people talk before class but not everyone can come early especially when taking the bus so I always arrive at time. Meeting people is a thing, I've met people in different situations, even bar like i said 😂 or apps (which i never wanna try again. Bad experience. Fake pictures, filters, old pics and they are dirty in real life and weirdos). Building connection is the hardest step. It's rare I've met people who want to connect more than "outside a beer or a drink". When they want to have fun, they are here, but when you need a real friend and you suffer, they disappear. But my open-minded may come from my own culture where my parents aren't from here, because of war unfortunately. Im asian and was born here. So I like people who are open minded, respectful and such. I agree with most of what you said, but simply knowing the causes of a problem is not enough, transformation can only happen if we accept the problem and genuinely want to resolve it. I think the problem for most western countries is people are lost, they are so divided, so entrenched in their own reality, they don't accept that they are the problem. What most people want is for other people, the ones who have differing opinions, to change. Governments, however subtle, encourage this division, it's easier to control a divided people than a nation that is united in it's goals.

But they co-started it - and as the Germans deal with it openly, by stating they unleashed that hell, the Austrians still live in denial, secretly wanting to be seen as victims, afraid of finally coming clean. A fascinating problem it is, and you can feel this shroud of moral uneasiness so well in Vienna, if you can look past the merry pride of today. Yes I also lived and worked in Munich for 6 years. Often visited friends in nearby Austria and Italy . Observed the same. The Bavarian culture can be a lot of fun for tourists, what with the Oktoberfest, lots of fairy-tale castles, Lederhosen and Biergartens... but there seems to be a negative undercurrent underneath all that. But I give the Germans a ton of credit. They also try to teach about WW2 and the Holocaust in the schools there. I asked a German friend what was it like learning about her country's history. She said it was a shock at first but then "it explained a lot". They built a successful democracy and for all the issues it caused, an overall successful Reunification. Those are incredibly difficult things to deal with. They've become one of our strongest allies. But like with all democracies, it's a work in progress. We are all striving to achieve that "more perfect union". Good luck to the Austrians and Germans!

I was starting to think the same thing, then I remembered all the times I'd monologue to friends around the table or fire pit. I also then noticed there were a lot of jump cuts, so she was speaking and probably drifted and couldn't get her thoughts straight at first and the videographer simply encouraged her to keep going. There are people like her in the world. I recall that video a couple years from the guy that looked homeless and his statements on humanity and politics and how well spoken he was and that was clearly not staged, he was simply a thinker about stuff. I'd like to think this was not staged but it's the internet so I'm just gonna listen to her message and move on.
