Your Majesty, Caesar, King, Emperor, Lord Protector, Excellency, Duke, these are only a handful of monikers given to leaders of nations throughout history. Picking from such official titles and honorifics to apply to one’s own leader when forming a new nation would seem rather straightforward… However, in a budding nation that vehemently rejected just about anything that was associated with the old world and its forms of government, deciding what to call their leader was anything but straightforward, and at one point brought the U.S. Senate to a screeching halt right from their earliest sessions. This is the fascinating, and mildly humorous, story of how the U.S. President got his then rather unique and extremely humble moniker amongst leaders of nations.

One of my favorite things to read about in American history is all the drama between the founding fathers. That being the case, I loved the end of the video where they're all talking shit on each other. It's funny. Human beings haven't really changed much.

You think of the forefathers as the most professional government the country has ever had, but when you hear about some of this drama, it makes the two main current presidential candidates seem like good buddies.

As a Brit this was a fascinating educational video. I do have one correction to note: On 28:06 a statement was displayed stating "Ye gods" and the narrator mispronounced as back in those days the letter "Y" was pronounced "th"....so in fact it should read "The Gods". Its a common mistake that most people make.
@onlythatonetime
@onlythatonetime 5 месяцев назад
More nerd notes: it was a letter separate from Y, known as thorn :)
@TodayIFoundOut
@TodayIFoundOut 5 месяцев назад
We have a video on this, yet for some reason my brain always in the moment goes with the Y pronunciation rather than thorn. 🤷😋 -Daven
@chitlitlah
@chitlitlah 5 месяцев назад
It was indeed supposed to be ye, the nominative form of you. The letter y wasn't pronounced as th, but stood in for the letter thorn during the early days of the printing press. However, by the late 1700s, th was mostly used as you can see in the words _with_ and _thou_ in that quote and every other document mentioned in the video.

I got to meet Ronald Reagan when he was President and I addressed him as Mr. Reagan and I was told he was the President Reagan. My remark was he was no different than any of the people that were there in that room. The people were surprised when he agreed with me and said I could call him Ron, but I used Mr. Reagan as he was older than I was.

It’s a sign of respect for the rank and the office itself. Not the individual who currently holds it. For example, my opinion of Donald Trump is that he’s a disgusting scumbag; however, I would still feel compelled to address him as Mr. President, regardless of my feelings about him specifically.
@vascovalente3929
@vascovalente3929 5 месяцев назад
If that really happened Ronald Reagan was as wrong as you you are not acknowledging Ronald Reagan but the office l so you are not addressing the man or woman but the rank . But of course some people need to make a point when they feel inferior without knowing that it’s not the case…

"The Sergeant-At-Arms should receive him at the door with the mace on his shoulder, which is inconvenient as we are lacking bot Sergeant and Mace." Thus it so often goes. Amusingly I had an email from the Office of the Sergeant-At-Arms of the Senate last week, so they appear to have resolved some of the issues. No Mace was presented.

I'm reminded of my favorite Fantasy Series: Wheel Of Time. There is a scene where the MC meets many heads of state. As each arrives, they are greeted and announced with Full Titles and much Pomp. But when the MC, who is now their Ruler, arrives, he is announced simply, with just his name... the Lack of Titles and Pomp Jars them.

"Prez" is the name of several characters appearing in comics published by DC Comics. The original was Prez Rickard, the first teenage President of the United States, who appeared in a short-lived comic series by writer Joe Simon and artist Jerry Grandenetti in 1973 and 1974. Similar characters have appeared since then, revisiting the concept or paying homage to the original character. In 2015, DC published a miniseries about a teenage girl named Beth Ross who is elected President via Twitter in the year 2036.

Good to see the pay changed for the VP. With the amount of actual time spent on the job, if it had stayed proportional, then I believe it would come in under minimum wage in many states today. That wouldn't be right. These offices are not for self-enrichment, but there should be decent compensation for it.
@MrSheckstr
@MrSheckstr 5 месяцев назад
It also speaks to the changing duties of the VP enacted by the change in which the VP is elected…. It went from being the nearly powerless head of the “loyal Opposition” to being the heir apparent, advisor and confident, and oftentimes mouth piece of the administration.
