The Worst Jobs in History: The Middle Ages.
Some of the least pleasant employment opportunities open to people in the Middle Ages. Tony Robinson discovers how fullers spent their working lives stomping on newly woven cloth in vats of stale urine, while leech collectors risked infection by wading into marshes and letting the bloodsuckers cling to their legs.

First, she noticed that her urine smelled like Frosted Flakes, then, on a hike, she relieved herself in the bushes and upon return to the place, she saw ants all over the log on which she’d peed. A trip to the doctor and a proper test confirmed the diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. The doctor herself told her that if she’d tasted her urine, it’d be sweet, but not to try it, for obvious reasons!

Leech collector wasn't nearly as bad a job as it's often made out to be: the little critters are completely painless - that's how they can be attached to people and other animals for long enough to feed, without being noticed. Also, they are quite easy to detach, using a bit of salt or heat applied to their rear end. It's just the "ick factor" which has us modern folks creeped out: but once you got used to it i should imagine it was MUCH more pleasant than a lot of much nastier Medaeval Age jobs!!

@KaptenN
@KaptenN 4 года назад
@@AnonimusQualquer When people speak of the "good old days" they generally mean "in my childhood when I had no responsibilities", not "back when our ancestors were treading in urine". Besides, it's entirely possible for some things to become better while other things become worse. People are nostalgic for the good stuff, but I don't think anyone wants to give up on the good stuff of today. It'd be great if we could just have the good stuff from all the ages and none of the bad stuff. Negating someone reminiscing about a time when people were kinder and had bigger living spaces by saying that we now have all information at our fingertips and better healthcare is to be completely beside the point and engaging in pointless whataboutism.

I went through that. Fairy tales really clean up the look of the era and misrepresent how people lived, not depicting the widespread suffering and filth, not to mention oppression of the church, monarchs, nobles and town officials. And in school, we were left with the impression that everyone had a small, local business, a craft and a pretty decent living in a wholesome, Christian environment. Now, we know it was completely opposite that. Our schools whitewashed this - arguably the lowest point in western civilization.

@@gaslitworldf.melissab2897 Yes, very true. In addition to that ... people, generally speaking, tend to overestimate themselves and their luck in life. They do not know they are most likely to be born to peasants or even worse.

A man counted my husband warts, simply counting them all over his hands with a felt tip marker. We weren't allowed to thank him, he hunted us out the door. My husbands hands became itchy as he left the drive way and were completely healed by the morning. He had about 30 warts. He didn't have one afterwards!! @Amy_the_Lizard 3 года назад
@@doobiesmoke15 One, not everyone alive at the time participated in or even approved of those practices. (Granted when the church endorsed killing cats, most people concluded it was okay, but not everyone defaulted to burning them alive.) And two, it'd be a lot easier to try and chop through the eel in one blow, or kill it and then cut it because a live conscious eel is going to fight back with everything its got, and they are very slimy and hard to hold onto. And three, even if the practice specifically stated that the eel HAD to be sawed through while alive for it to work, they could have just SAID THAT instead of actually DOING it, and used a dead eel. Edit: Also, while it did occur in Medieval times, bear baiting wasn't all that popular until the Renaissance

@@Amy_the_Lizard the people that do these things are reinactors and with that they need to be historically accurate and do everything the same way that it would have been done back in the day. @Amy_the_Lizard
@Amy_the_Lizard 3 года назад
@@Nekogal21 No offense, but I'd much rather have that than what we got. As I say again, they could have just SAID that it normally would have used a live eel. Other historical reinactors do it all the time when something isn't exactly right. People that do armor tests include a disclaimer if their armor is of uniform thickness (which isn't historically accurate,) clothing reconstructers include a disclaimer if they have to use a wool/polymer blend fabric due to costs, or if their doing Victorian era clothing mention that they used synthetic whalebone for their corset because whale baleen isn't something you can just go out and buy - and since most baleen whales don't have very large populations, buying actual baleen that a whale had to die for just so you can make a 100% accurate corset would be pretty immoral.
@Nekogal21
@Nekogal21 3 года назад
@@Amy_the_Lizard with corsets there are other options like Reed, feather boning and steel so you don't have to use whale bone or the synthetic version which people who are environmentally conscious hate because it's plastic. With medical treatments with the exception of amputations without anesthetic and with unsanitary tools because that's illegal it is best to show the actual processes for true representation. I do this kind of thing in my free time when I'm not working at a 17th century style village and they are strict on getting things right and if it's not authentic we get in trouble and I also feel guilt for it as I do want to show people what stuff was like in that period and it's a form of experimental archaeology after all (something that the public actually like seeing). Saying that you think something is wrong and shouldn't be done to someone to takes massive pride in what they do and in educating the community would be severely hurtful, maybe the people who run the site where this woman does her stuff tells her that it needs to do it that way and relayed that to Tony who is a massive fan of doing experimental archaeology and using old techniques because he loves history and such. They aren't nasty people by any means just doing historically accurate things on a site where the people who run it tell these reinactors and interpreters how they want it to be done
