Yes with the Forbidden Arts, the power to create, change. And destroy he can be a God But he seems to want to make his power legitimate or risk going to war with the other Kingdoms with force So he rather usurp his way to William’s Kingdom by forcibly marrying Odette, to create a shroud of legitimacy while having the Forbbiden Arts to supplement his rule
Oh and he actually stated in the movie he already tried that and failed, even if he succeeded he’ll spend the rest of his life fighting to keep his kingdom He rather have peace of mind by doing it legally by marrying his way to the throne Also it seems he feared losing his power again, in his first attempt, King William found him out and destroyed his means of controlling the forbidden Arts, stripping him of his power. He would have been killed if William wasn’t merciful at his own peril It took him years to regain his power, and likely didn’t want to risk losing it again, by getting unwanted attention and attracting enemies So it seems why he thought marrying Odette was the safest option, although as in his No More Mister Nice Guy Song he no longer cared
Interesting fact. Jack Palace was a professional boxer. So in the cartoon, he sends Derek an uppercut to a knockout. And the famous one-arm push-up is a reference to the 1992 Oscars.
It would have made a pretty cool action doll, it could have had a mouth that opened and closed, flexible wings, opening talons, light up eyes, monster sounds and a poseable tail who else thinks this is a good idea?
Rothbart's overconfidence and arrogance was what ultimately led to his downfall. His great animal form may have seemed terrifying but he was driven by hatred and a lust for power, if he had usurped Williams kingdom his reign would've only lasted mere months.
That’s why he needed to marry Odette so taking over William’s kingdom would have legitimacy In reality Rothbart was far more powerful than he appeared in the first movie, later movies show his power the Forbidden Arts has 3 main abilities, the Power to Create, Change, and Destroy With that power he has unlimited potential, But yes his arrogance limited him to his Great Animal Form He could have created armies for himself or blast Derek to dust with destructive magic blasts, or change Derek into something helpless and vulnerable But Rothbart himself was an animal at Heart and rather tear his enemies apart, which makes one shutter to think how he killed King William and his guards offscreen

While I maybe not be a big fan of Rothbart, I got to admit his Great Animal form is pretty scary. I mean pause 3:48. If I didn't know better, I swear it something out of a Don Bluth film.

Just like with all three British male consorts: Prince George of Denmark (stayed so when his wife Anne became queen), Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (though Queen Victoria *did* want to stylize him as king consort, which Parliament wasn't having), and, to a most recent extent, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (He had primarily been from a Greek and Danish royal family, but had to drop those titles before it was even announced that he and then-Princess Elizabeth, the future Elizabeth II, were engaged). Most monarchies are like that. A male monarch can pass his title and style to his wife, making her queen consort, but a female monarch cannot do the same with her husband, especially if he either wasn't from the same land or wasn't royal to begin with.

All things considered, this could still technically happen even today by the rules of monarchy, as there are several ways to become King. Rothbart knew that taking the crown was just not the best option, because most people do not consider that legal and will fight the self-declared king over it. Marriage however, and a declaration from the Nobility would be considered legal and then Rothbart could get everything he wanted. He just needed Odette to agree to it. However... After murdering her father, that was never going to happen. Odette would have preferred to just stay a swan forever than give Rothbart her blessing after that. Even with a near perfect plan, Rothbart shot himself in the foot with his first move.
After realizing Rothbart and Carl Grissom (the overarching antagonist in "Batman 1989") were both portrayed by Jack Palance, i came to appreciate Jack Palance more, and also get the feeling that Rothbart could've been a composite character of Carl Grissom and Jack Napier like nothing.

That would’ve been interesting. Not sure if he would’ve been allied with Regina and Rumplestiltskin or not but I lean towards him lying low throughout the series and trying to find a way to overthrow them and claim total rulership for himself.
Happy Halloween! I’m here for some villainy since October 31st is a day to celebrate it. Rothbart is a classic love to hate villain! Although I was scared when he loses his temper locking Odette away. And I was enjoying him right up until his motive decay of now wanting to rule William’s kingdom without Odette.
He could have just turned that old hag into Odette and married her to become king. Nobody would have knew the truth if he got rid of the original Odette.
Unless something caused the spell to be broken early like another wizard/witch reversing it. Besides, the kingdom might ask the fake Odette questions to prove it's really her. Questions that only the real Odette would know the answer to because they revolved around her private life.
