In this video, we explore one aspect of the Western Australian Government Railways (W.A.G.R.), specifically the Swan View Tunnel, which formed a part of the Narrow Gauge (3'6") Eastern Railway Line to Kalgoorlie, where connections were made to the Standard Gauge track to the Eastern States. Work began on the tunnel in 1894, and was completed on 18th April 1895, the first train running on 22nd February 1896. The tunnel formed an integral part of a new deviation away from the existing line to the east, and was considered by Engineers Australia to be: "A significant technical feat for the time" (Ref Wikipedia) Today, we walk up the old track bed, now converted into a hiking and bicycling track, walk through the tunnel, and then return via the bypass, built, after numerous incidents, to minimize the passage of eastern bound trains travelling uphill though the tunnel. The lighting inside the tunnel was provided by my Lumintop EDC-18 torch with neutral lighting colour temperature (not cool white or warm white, but closer to natural daylight.) The main camera I used was a Sony HDR-AX53, with a Sony X3000 action cam for walking shots. Good, but not in the same class as my newer DJI Pocket 2 gymbal camera which I now use.
