That weird island location is probably one of, if not the most, important strategic location in the region.

I went here just to say that. biggest island in the baltics, the sea where we have a Russian landmass connected to it and where our ally Finland has their territory. Gotland is incredibly important. If the Russians take it they can mobilize from there and supply it and we would be fucked in 3 weeks. Good video!

@@Toujeo Most, if not all, military strategists would disagree. Placing a select number of anti-air and anti-ship systems on the island as well as fighter jets would effectively block off the entire region making it near impossible for Nato to reinforce their Baltic Nato member states in case of a conflict. It is still regarded as one of the most strategic important islands anywhere.
@abcbadpassword

The big island (Gotland) is a strategically important island. It's like a huge aircraft carrier in the middle of the Baltic sea. Whoever controls Gotland, controls the airspace over the Baltic Sea. So whenever Russia starts acting crazy, like now, the Swedish army always sends reinforcement to Gotland, as it is the most likely point where Russia would launch an invasion. I've spent a couple of weeks on Gotland and so did my great-grandfather during ww2.
@williamalm9603
@williamalm9603 2 года назад
well you are not entirely right on that one. There is no good to station aircraft on Gotland. Its too exposed and the advantaged of stationing them there compared to any runway close to Kaliningrad or other russian base is lost due to the sea way for resupply. on the other hand. stationing a couple fo long range SAMs and you can annoy all the surrounding countries but it does not lock down anything. Swedens airforce can still operate its aircraft and so does the Finnish and german airforces too. But with the presents of russian SAM threat. Unfortunately its after all of strategical significant but will probably be a noble last stand in the case of war. And then when it comes
@AmiDonk
@AmiDonk 2 года назад
Russia has always been interested in Gotland, they have also conquered the island once, but we took it back. As long as they have an interest in the island, it is even more important to defend it. And you do not want a Russian base so close to Sweden anyway .

You have to remember that Swedish units are designed and expected to act far more independently than American ones. This ties in with the 'mission command' structure which allows for a kind of high-tech guerilla warfare. Sweden's is a purely defensive force with the strategic goal of making the country more trouble than it's worth. Even the air force is set up to function without centralized control or logistics. The doctrine is one of decentralization; much of the organization and weapon systems make much more sense if you keep that in mind.

@williamalm9603
@williamalm9603 2 года назад
No we are not planing to fight a high tech guerilla warfare. that is a common civilan misunderstanding. yes the last resort in the defence doctrine involves what's called the "independent war" or the "unrestrained war" (Fria kriget) that was suposed to come in to effect when the comandstructure was broken down and there no longer is a functioning high command. Then the order stands that all enemy personel shall be fought and every order to ceae fire is fake and to be ignored. This is once again not the first corse of action. We intend to fight in smaller units and on our terms. But with a very intended target of keeping civilians safe and or border firm. Two things that are impossible when fighting as a guerrilla.

The integration of various specalists into a single formation makes a lot of sense for a small army. Swedish military thinking for the last century has focused on fighting an invasion on Swedish soil, with disruptions to infrastructure and communication. Brigades, battalions and even companies are designed to be as self-sufficient as possible, hence the presence of specialist troops at all levels of command.
@cynic7049
@cynic7049 2 года назад
Yes, at least for a small army that it it is attacked will be so from a huge one. Brigade made to be able to fight one when central command and Division is taken out, Battalions to fight on without the Brigade, when that goes down Companies without the Battalion and so on down the structure. In theory keeping on fighting as long as any soldiers are left..

Yeah not having to carry everything is a massive bonus for mechanized infantry, and you also have a bunch of assets always close by; mines, atgms and machine guns. Not to mention the IFV itself and its autocannon, sensors and other equipment. In bad weather it's particularly nice since you're essentially riding around with a little house, all warm and dry whenever you get to go inside it, though I'll say this works much better in the cold. The bad side being at least for some is that you're mostly in the thick of it. From the dismount perspective you're essentially doing a high tempo mission, getting inside your ifv and pretty much immediately falling asleep before waking up to the order to dismount again, whether that be for another task or just making camp. Another big bonus is that since you're carrying so much stuff you're not as dependent on logistics. Got plenty of food, water, ammo and gear to make by comfortably for a few days at least. But when you need to stock up, you need a larger logistics support of course.

Also here's a particularly underrated video of a combined mechanized force very much like in this video, doing a live fire attack drill. Filmed in chaotic pov style. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Lw1OADNivV8.html If anyone has similar videos to recommend, please do.

Sweeden is filled with huge forests and mountains. The entire land is basically a mountain chain. Movement is hard around there. If you attack sweeden without engineers around, you will be cut of by forests, briges and rocks all the time. It is a must if you wish to fight there. Also, infantry is super effective in mountains and forests. If your tanks do not have infantry support, they will get blow up left and right. Infantry can be sneaky and very well hidden from both roads and air.
@Rallarbusen
@Rallarbusen 2 года назад
The true beast is the Archer, 155 mm howitzer. It's autoloaded, the crew don't have to dismount when firing. It can adjust the muzzle velocity by loading a different number of propellant bags and bleeding pressure from the barrel. This means it can launch a salvo of seven grenades that arrives on target simultaneously, with the vehicle moving out before the grenades impact.

"Bandvagn" = "track+vagon" = a word for just about any vehicle is mainly used for carring or pulling stuff that is prepelled with tracks instead of wheels. Another similar word is "bandtraktor" = "track+tractor" = a tractor prepelled by tracks instead of wheels, also used for "bulldozers".

Was armored infantry squadleader 20 years ago. Different set up back then with two KSP58s, a Gustav crew and the two leaders with an AT4 and the AK5B each. Battalion exercises was 99% supporting the tanks mounted. But platoon and company exercises were 99% training for the dismounted combat. The origin of our armored infantry was German tactics in WW2, where their grenadiers would follow their tanks into combat in halftracks, and more often than not fight mounted. So it's a tried and tested tactic. Basically, if the enemy has to stop to dismount in order to fight, swedish troops can push on and outmaneuver the enemy and still be able to fight mounted. Not sure how they do things these days, but as far as I know, the armored assault on foot is still a thing. Basically, mortars hit the enemy location while the CV90s advance, tanks supporting with direct fire. 120mm mortars, 40mm autocannons and 120mm tank cannons should cause some damage is the theory. Then, the infantry dismounts within 50m of the enemy location and pushes in to finish the job point blank. All I can say is that I had alot of fun during my time as a conscript 😂

A friend of mine was in Kosovo for the UN and said one other thing swedish soldiers have for an advantage to many others is that many have some kind of civilian education before they to to the army. We have educated electricians, mechanics etc etc in the army so they can do more stuff than fight if they need to do it. He told me once that some soldiers from another country had to wait for a mechanic to come and fix some problem with their car/viacle/or what it was but his pluton had some mechanics in their pluton because thay had that education from school.

I was Group Leader for Norrbotten regemente back in 98 just as we were getting the AK4 totally fased out for the AK5 because not every soldier had the AK5. But after redeploying to go to "Fjälljägarskolan" Mountain hunter school i became a sniper and we had all the newest kit and i was issued the AK5C 40MM and the AI sniper that kicks freaking ass! Served with FN troops for awhile and gotta say that we can definitely defend our self if we have to and everyone i know from back in the military are all saying the same thing with what's going on in Ukraine right now that the Russians would not have such a easy time trying to cross in to our country! Awesome video thank you. I was not into mechanised, but infantry as driver of those two connected cubes kind of vehicles. Ten people in one group, three groups was one platoon. We had so many 'pansarskott', (one round anti-tank). We where purely trained for guerilla warfare hit hard and retread. Blow everything up, roads, what ever. And we had to do everything in darkness. And when I say darkness I mean darkness. Not a single flashlight allowed and we have 6h sun light winter time. Fun thinking back of those days. Less fun being there in minus 10°c in our winter darkness 😉

Up until early 2000, all swedish men (for women it was optional) everyone was expected to do 6-9 months mandatory service, that is why we can mobilize 70 battalions. In 2010 it was fully optional, but there is now talk about reinstating mandatory service. The National Guard is fully optional, but have (to no big supprise) seen a big raise in applications the past year. When it comes to armament, it is not very strange we have a lot of options and able to use a lot of artillery, anti-tank and anti-air weapons. I meen... we manufacture the most used AT weapons in the developed world (The Carl-Gustav and the AT4). I guess you already know about it, but check out the Archer artillery system. It is an absolut beast. (They show a little of it in the clip)
