The SwissMicros DM42 rocks. But should it?

Because the rubber pads are located inboard more than they ought to be, the calculator rocks slightly when using the keys on the extreme left or right columns. I added additional pads outboard of the OEM pads in order to eliminate the rocking. I have not yet patented this startling innovation.

That's a beautiful calculator. Really charming and, although it looks modern, theres a bit of nostalgia on its design.

I thought exactly the same Scott. An almost perfect calculator, except for 2 things, the Enter button that has two microswitches under it (it still throws me when I get the double click) and the rubber feet not going far enough to the edge. But for the rest, superb piece of kit and I almost prefer it over my HP15C :-).

I had no idea for the reason the Enter feel clicked twice when pressed near the center - I trained myself to hit it off to either side. I would also add that the keyboard is very good, but not great like the hp 48GX (and I would expect the hp 42S as well since it is of a similar vintage). Regardless, I am very happy w my DM42. Thanks for leaving a comment.

That's an important concern from a fellow key banger. I like your solution. My desktop at work is slightly warped. It drives me crazy and to the point of bringing my hand plane in for some old fashioned adjustment. On any given day I ridiculously bounce between a 35s, Prime, 15c, 41cx, and a 32s like a chain smoker with Bic lighters. I thought I had your issue until every model bounced. It will drive ya' crazy. Thanks for posting & I hope Swiss Micros considers the input.

Laughed at the chain smoker analogy. I think the type of person who is into something like the SwissMicros DM42 is also the type of person a bit prone to analysis of everything. But, a person who is very particular and detail-focused is exactly the person I want designing my airplane, car, etc. Thanks for leaving a comment, and enjoy that excellent HP collection!

Problem still present at SN9840. Rocks pretty heavy on the right side. I can spin the calculator 720° sitting "flat" on the table + the two case halves don't seem to match too well, leaving a rather unpleasant sharp edge on top. Pretty disapponted with the metal casing considering one payes around 300€ with shipping and customs.

It would be cool if they switched to a machined base, but probably not cost effective at the scale they are doing.

good idea 🤔, indeed there is a little wobble. I tend to hold the calculator with 2 hands to eliminate this.

I think I bent mine back into shape one time when it had a slight wobble.

The advantage of your approach is that you can still use the original case - mine no longer fits.

Just a question. Are the keys hard to press compared to the keys of the original hp42?. Thank you

I have never felt the keys of the original hp 42S, but I do have an hp 48GX which I believe is very similar. The 48GX keys are great. They are better than the SwissMicros DM42 keys. Partly because they are more rounded and partly b/c they just have a better feel. That said, I find the DM42 keyboard completely acceptable, just not as good as the hp 48GX's. I did confirm that my DM42 has the improved keyboard -- it was a revision they implemented on 9/25/2020 according to SwissMicros tech support. I would rather use the DM42 than the original hp 42S because of the amazingly good screen with larger viewing area and the improved, dedicated menu keys, ability to import/export programs via usb, etc. Even if the keyboard is not quite as magical as the original's. Hope this helps.

After HP stopped making "real" Calculators after phasing out the 48G/GX, I felt obligated to support a company like SwissMicros. :) Unfortunately DM42's purchased in 2022 still "rocks", apparently due to manufacturing problems with the metal backplate. There's no HW-rev markings outside on the DM42. Does anyone know at which serial numbers the HW was supposed to be improved? Btw. It's not the placement of the rubber feet, but because the metal-back isn't flat! SwissMicros should IMO fix this by overall increasing the mechanical quality on the DM42. In the meantime they could simply add some thickness to the rubber feet. ;)

Perhaps mine is not flat and that mine is fine simply because I went with thicker rubber feet. Manufacturing is HARD. Just ask Elon. My calculator is s/n 06470 and has the improved keyboard. I've had it for around 1.5 years. You might want to contact SwissMicros tech support if you have specific questions -- they were quick to respond to my question about whether or not I had the improved keyboard (it seemed fine to me which made me think it probably was, but I wanted to confirm). I still think it is great that SwissMicros is doing what they are.

Mine also has a slightly curved back. sn is 07445 i have it for a few weeks now. It does not bother me because i use it mostly sitting on top of its leather case.

@@Slasher006 Too bad they have not come up with a fix in the intervening 1000ish units (assuming the serial numbers are incremented by 1).
