And that fellows eyes are popping out at 50.9 cents a litre, hate to see him in March 2022 at $2-20 a litre out here. Great commercial and good for a laugh!

0:16 I bet Australians wish they could still get petrol for 50.9 cents per litre. ($1.30 in today’s money)

0:17 $20 refill of 40 litres of leaded petrol would cost the equivalent of about $58 in 2023 dollars. in 2024, it’d cost about $88 😢

The Best? Huge claim to make when you have rollingstock at the time that dated from 1925 at the earliest, not to mention doors on moving trains that would stay open even on the city underground sections. Talk about a public liability nightmare. Maybe on the Illawarra line where a single-decker "red rattler" was seldom seen since the July 1980 rerouting to Bondi Junction. I was fortunate enough to catch a single-decker from Rockdale to Wynyard in March 1986, but fiddling with the window caused me a bit of pain near the cutting at Arncliffe, sore head for a while on the way to the dentist of all places. Single deck Leeds Forge cars were built in England and imported in components, then assembled at the English-Electric Company works Granville, as opposed to the Walsh Island power cars which were built in Newcastle. Keeping pretty much to the same design until 1960 they were sturdy, durable and well built but a bit long in the tooth by 1987 even if the high-backed seats were the most comfortable. In addition, you had other relics from the 1920s, rusting stanchions, a copper wire catenary, blue "Be Tidy" tin garbage cans, gravel-surfaced platforms in many cases, faded 1950s concrete station signs but at least in keeping with the London underground bar + circle design, butter-dish station lighting from the 1960s, 1920s electric light and semaphore signals and in many cases and grotty cream painted station houses with stinky toilets. The Best? I think not. Elected in March 1988 Premier Nick Greiner appointed a New-Zealander Ross Sayers as State Rail CEO to sort this mess out. Riding around the system in October 1988 on a sight-seeing tour presumably to familiarise himself with the product who knows what he thought of this working museum.

That’s great to hear about you travelling on the lines back in the 80s. Do you remember the opening of the East Hills to Glenfield Line and the Eastern Suburbs Line?

@@sydneytravellervlogs4659 The Eastern Suburbs line was before my time but it was opened by the Premier Neville Wran in June 1979, and was a Central to Bondi Junction shuttle service only before complete integration in July 1980. I've seen photos of the East Hills to Glenfield line opening by Premier Barrie Unsworth on a rainy day in December 1987. Holsworthy station is the only one on the line but it was very modern for its time. Both projects had different funding arrangements compared with the New Southern Railway to the airport and were more keynesian in that nature. Having said that though the Askin/Lewis government allocated money in the mid 1970s to upgrade the freight rollingstock to a modern standard. Grain and coal wagons more specifically and a few gondolars and container flat wagons and were built by the Comeng factory at Granville, Goninan and even a few hoppers from Vickers-Scotts of Ipswich.

@@sydneytravellervlogs4659 I also forgot to mention that the beginnings of the construction of the Eastern Suburbs Railway started outside Central station in the late 1940s and was very much an on again, off again project built over the duration of multiple state governments and was largely complete by 1977. They even had the billboards in the stations on the walls in 1978 well before it opened. My Dad did the Bush's Meat Chunks dog food one.
