The one thing you wouldn't see in West Berlin before 1990, no matter whether you were from East or West Germany, were Lufthansa planes at the airports. German airlines were not allowed to fly to Berlin (which is one of the reasons why East Berlin's airport was built outside the actual city).

For some reason I utterly lost it on "I've drawn a wizard"

Interestingly, the map is actually wrong: Eastern German maps were always a bit distorted to make it hard for people to plan escapes into the West.

As a Greenlandic person, I smile with glee every time you geographical gentlemen refer to my home country. You cartographic chaps do have a wonderful sense of humor, to which I find myself chuckling from time to time.

I turned on English captions when he was speaking German and the captions were in... German...

The Germans did not in fact "erase any trace of the Berlin Wall", quite the opposite. There are whole parts of it still standing, there's pieces relocated and placed in all sorts of places around the city (even inside the Mall of Berlin) and where there is no wall, a line of double bricks on the pavement traces the line on which the wall stood.

Technically it is correct in the same way a map of one country often doesn’t include other countries, a map of East Germany wouldn’t include West Germany, which was a totally different country

Your comment at the end was rather ominous: "a bygone era, when citizens freedom of movement was restricted". Certainly does not seem to be the trend at the moment. Is it possible we are returning to an era of blanked out maps (other than for practical reasons)?

I had a history teacher, years ago in college, who told us about his time stationed along the Iron Curtain, near the Czech border. His squad was out on patrol, away from supervising officers so they decided to get some alcohol. They sent one guy off with some money to score some brews for them. He came back with a lot more than they expected. It seemed to be some off brand that they never heard of. He was bragging about how cheap it was. His only complaint was they'd given him change with some funny looking money.

Coming to this several years late. I find this fascinating...... County of Rutland you say, is that near east Leicestershire, there's a place call Rutland in there.
