Thank you for another great video :) It is very interesting that the same symbol can mean 2 different things, like strawberries, can mean earthly delight & the holy trinity. I wonder how do we know today the actual meaning of a symbol.
Right! In essence, symbolism in art history tries to give a similar meaning to certain items even though they were painted in areas that had no connection with each other. Hieronymus Bosch, for example, was not exposed to much art from other artists, which 'forced' him to come up with his own ideas. Had he known about the Italian Renaissance, he would probably have taken that into account...
Thank you for another great video with so many beautiful works from the Renaissance period ! Along with these paintings, do you think you could refer some fresco works as well? I am sure those ancient frescos from Pompeii must have some fruits in them, but more with an everyday life meaning than the symbolism.
Thank you for the suggestion. The challenge with those older frescoes is that the details are not always visible anymore, but from my limited understanding of them, those people already used quite a bit of symbolism in their works.
