@@dasse6637 Not shocking at all. I’m a teacher and many times we show our students more love than their own families. We buy them clothes, Holiday presents, food, etc. The parents are reported to Child Services, but usually nothing happens (sigh).
My husband was starved and beaten when he was a kid and teachers didn’t do anything to help him, even when he told them what was happening. The system IS STILL broken.
The system certainly is broken and MAYBE the people at DCF who SHOULD of been following up on the reports of abuse and SHOULD of been doing something about it, need to be held criminally accountable because then, just maybe they’ll actually start doing their jobs PROPERLY and STOP being so ridiculously lazy. Also, the school most probably reported their concerns also, which is possibly why they took poor Gavin out of school to supposedly homeschool him. Yeah right. It’s the same old story. When schools actually report concerns of possible abuse, you’ll find the majority of those families will then take their child, or children out of school and either enrol them at another school, or mostly supposedly homeschool them. Again something MUST change and I personally believe one of those changes should be that if DCF doesn’t or isn’t doing their jobs properly, then they MUST be criminally punished. Maybe then we’ll find a huge difference in abuse cases, even if it saves just one child, it will be 100% worth that change💔😢
They are mandatory reporters, the fed him but failed him. He’s dead today in part because those mandatory reporters didn’t report the crap. I give no thanks to adults who do the minimum to aid a child. They had a legal obligation here. And a moral one, they failed
@@israelizzyyarrashamiaak766according to the news report video they not only paid for his lunch ticket but they also DID report it to school officials AND DCFS🙏so they did they’re job as mandated reporters and as kind human beings, DCFS failed though and school officials as well. but those lunch ladies went above and beyond and you can see how much they cared
The authorities knew the stepmother was not sending the kid to school with a lunch, and got ANGRY that someone fed her starving child. They should have removed him then!
“Thank you for feeding my son, I’ll have to make sure to do better with his lunches and make sure he’s not hungry at school anymore. Here’s a some money for an emergency school lunch/snack fund for him and if it does happen again please contact me” that is what any reasonable parents response would be… reacting with anger at someone that just fed your hungry child screams guilt and neglect.
DCF should 100 percent be held liable!! My parents almost unalived us many times growing up and dcf was constantly called. They never helped us and my brother passed away as a result. Justice will not be served for Gavin, if dcf is not held accountable!!
They will fire everyone. These places do it all the time because of this kind of crap. The problem is that they hire the same caliber employees as before.
and i, m afraid if a child speak up at school to what is happening, the teacher might call the parents to see who, s telling the truth and that, s when they pull the child out of school and than this is really an alarm bell for them to investigate
His death is on "irresponsible parents" !!! CPS, LEOs, DCFS, NO ONE can keep up with thousands of kids going through this. in Utah we're reading about this daily. Domestic violence on the rise and no Planned Parenthood! smh
^ of course the parents are responsible, but come on. If MULTIPLE workers from the SCHOOL are calling, Especially multiple times about the same continuing concern, there is clearly a problem. Dcs is a terrible and failed system, and i say that as a former foster child.
Seriously? Planned parenthood is going to solve this huh? What's the difference between an unborn baby and this child here in this story? According to that logic then what the parents did to gavin is not wrong. If its okay to murder unborn babies why is it wrong to murder any child? The only difference between gavin and unborn children is time . Babies have their entire dna at conception. Its not murder that is the remedy. Its the gospel of jesus. Please turn away from your sins and turn To christ. Stop advocating for the murder of children, that does not solve cause or poverty.
@@styphlynne8253 bb there's laws in our country for a reason and these DCFS workers are criminally liable for his death. Go traffic in misery somewhere else
My brother and I grew up in a home like this and my school teachers noticed. They helped us every day and one of my friend’s mothers started sending an extra sandwich for me. I am so grateful for their love and care. 🙏🏼
I know an old lesbians lady who was a case worker and she hated kids. She only took the job because she could retire after 30 years. She gets almost 5000. A month plus full medical benefits. She admitted she started the job just for that Reason. she retired in her early 50s enjoying her selfish old life. So did her partner. So they lived on almost 10,000. A month. That’s why some of them do it.
@@MySnowhawkjust bc she hated the job doesn’t mean she didn’t do her job correctly. Many people take the job for money but if they did the job right then it is okay. I don’t care for kids but I would never harm them
As a mother, I don't understand how any parent would purposefully force their own child to suffer and starve. 😭 This poor boy could have been saved had DCFS actually done their job!! 😡
She was the step mom, probably hated raising someone else’s kids. I honestly feel dad should get the harshest sentence cause that was his child he watched starve
I agree. I don't understand either im literally sitting outside a church. I'm going on 3 hours I have to wait 2 more hours, so I can get some food for my kids unfortunately all our money goes on rent and utilities so I don't have enough for food , that's not gonna stop me from finding a way to feed my kids. Later, I'm gonna go donate plasma to get grocery money, too . These kinds of parents are disgusting, vile people . R.I.P LITTLE MAN I HOPE YOU'RE IN A BETTER PLACE WITH ALL THE FOOD YOU COULD HAVE EVER DREAMED OFF.
Unfortunately some mothers are missing that innate care for children. My mother would ground me from eating and I was her flesh and blood. It's sad but mothering isn't always natural to everyone who gives birth
Exactly…way too late. Gavin is in the arms of Jesus now, safe & sound, finally happy. He’s at peace and welcomed at the Banquet in the Lord’s Paradise and loved by many in Heaven who greeted this dear child.
Give me a break! If God was real, he should have stopped this. And don't give me the "free will" excuse. I'm sure the kid wasn't exercising "free will" in starvation. And the whole "it's God's will" is a crap reason. Or the "HE moves in mysterious ways" garbage. All of that is just to make everyone feel better because you can't prove or disprove any of it. This child suffered for no fault of his own. It's solely on his parents and a garbage system
This is why school lunches should be free for every child from kindergarten to seniors in high school. No child should have to go hungry. When my son was still in school, they had breakfast available for the kids, as well as lunch. They also had after school programs with free tutoring, and snacks were provided. Even if kids didn't have food at home, they at least had full stomachs M-F during the day. They had a summer program that fed children when the schools were typically closed. Food should be not be a right only for those who can pay. We live in a broken world, unfortunately, and too often the child protective services are overwhelmed, understaffed, or in some other way, fail to do so. RIP Gavin.
It boggles my mind to hear people argue school lunch shouldn’t be free. Especially when we generate more tax revenue than any other country on the planet. There’s more than enough money to do so. It’s straight up evil to make a child go hungry because he doesn’t have $3.50 to spend on lunch.
@@PinkTigger33 I hate to bring politics into things but this is one of those instances where I hate to hear a lot of Republicans talking about cutting school funding all the time. our youth need every possible resource there is. sometimes their parents can't afford necessities but sometimes they can but just won't, like in this story. kids should be required to have breakfast & lunch at school, school supplies, a backpack & even basics like 2 new outfits from underwear on out to pants, shirt & shoes. this story & others like it break my heart because this was 100 percent preventable if any official from dcfs or the police would have just done their job
There is free reduced lunch that ANYONE can sign up for, they literally don’t even look at how much the household is making, it should be mandatory that EVERY child apply’s for it. If we could do free meals in Covid why not now!
Who pays for it dimwit? Why should people with no kids pay for YOUR kids anymore? We pay enough in taxes as it is for b@stred kids! NO ONE is entitled to eat! You aren't owed food by society! The ONLY reason we have food stamps is as a USDA subsidy so we don't go broke producing food! if no one buys it no one makes money and no one can produce food and we ALL STARVE! You imbeciles! TAKE CARE OF YOUR OWN KIDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@scorpion-lg4icexactly. It’s amazing the number of people people who think school lunch shouldn’t be free and actively vote republicans to gut the whole system. It’s cruel
I say the same thing every single day. What the F is wrong with people. Too many children are dying from abusive parents. Too many elderly people being abused. Too many domestic and wild animals being abused. Every day appears to be worse than the day before
That's what I was going to say. I know kids who were removed when they weren't in danger and were cared for who were removed while they investigated but the ones who were in danger were not only never taken away, the parents were never even investigated
@angelawatts66 They do this because children from healthy homes are more adoptable. Children from actual abuse have behavioral issues and aren't as pretty so are less adoptable.
Thank you Ms. Jan. You did ALL you could do. You stood in the gap for those who didn’t, couldn’t or wouldn’t. May you be blessed & I hope & pray you’re granted peace.
Parents like this should fear for their lives. Where are the communities? People like this need to live in fear of retaliation by their neighbors. If we ALL aren't protecting our children, then all of us have failed.
@@mediocreman2 have you watched tucker carlsons interview with standford medical doctor? They call out that the government doesn't care about you or the kids in fact in some cases, in many cases actually they and the food and pharma industries profit off your kids being sick. Look it up! It's eye opening.
I love my parents. When I was 13, they decided to become foster parents. We had many children in our care . but one day.we get a brother and sister(she was 5 months old, he was 2 yrs old. They had been abused..severely. My parents adopted them!
Bless these lunch ladies. Thank you for what you did to help this unfortunate young boy. It’s heartbreaking. Just crushing what happened to him. There’s no excuse for it.
Bless that woman for doing everything she could to care for a child who was neglected and abused by his own family. This happens too often, and when it's reported, it should be dealt with swiftly. Why could a stepmom be allowed to discontinue the care of providing food to a hungry child and it not be questioned? This is sickening. May he rest in peace away from these monsters. I wish I could save all the children, adopt, foster, whatever... no one should be treated like that, no one.
@@joncharlotteschoen Because of school district and state education authority BS. The school staff themselves were reporting and trying to help the kid (like the lunch lady paying for his school meals out of pocket), but once the “mother” complained about it the district and the education board turns inward and blocks staff from intervening for fear of parents pursuing litigation which would affect the financial status of the district and the state.
@@christianbauch7834 If you think about it, though, if a kid is in a bad situation where they are being starved by the parents... what exactly would the parents be able to sue the school for? For feeding the child they're starving? I don't see how they'd be able to do anything against the school
@@haileyt857 they took the child out from school and homeschooled him for the express purpose of killing him. If you watch it again his death occurred after he began homeschooling. I can’t believe his family wasn’t investigated beforehand 😓
Child protective services?? I see more damage from these organizations than safety for the children!!! In my opinion, it's because the people are overwhelmed with parents who should never have children!!! When a claim is made it's supposed to be investigated!! Seems this DID NOT happen!!
I was a teacher assistant in Florida for special needs children, I loved them all so much. I went to pay for lunch for a few of them one day and the cafeteria lady told me I couldn't, and I said watch me. I handed the kids a tray of food and ask them to go take a seat, and I told her I pay for it or it's free. I never had a problem after that. Alot of these kids special needs or not don't get food at home so school food is important. Shame on the step mother. Gavin is in heaven now, God Bless that little one, you will always be in my thoughts and prayers. I love you little one, no child deserves this. This breaks my heart 💔. And Yes the system is very very broken . God is watching these baby's, and they will not suffer anymore. And the lady in the cafeteria ,I Thank You, for what you did you are an angel and your friend is too. Because I was with the kids all the time I would order pizza. And also I would have a permission slip for Saturday and we would have pizza, play games. What ever they wanted. My boys were a couple of years older and they adored my class. We need to take care of our children. I know this was long, and I thank you for listening to this.
@bethihearyou1029 I love people like you! My Dad was a history/ English teacher who went back to school in his 40s to become a special education teacher. Specifically, behaviorally challenged kids. We always had "his kids" for the holidays and summers at his house. A full belly, a warm and safe place to sleep and a gift or two was something many of them never experienced at home. We had to keep these holidays a secret. Too many parents complained that "Mr. B was spoiling their kids. Overstepping what a teacher should do. " I am the woman I am today because he taught me empathy. To do better when you know better. Thank you, Dad! Rest in peace. You deserve it. 💜
@@MyArgylesock because they were told and were aware of the problem and did nothing to intervene. I feel they have a certain responsibility to the children that are In their care so many days and hours per week. If the lunch lady knew I’m sure she alerted someone. That’s just my opinion not everyone’s I’m sure.
What's that? The public school system is broken and nobody in power actually cares about the children? The only time you hear child services getting involved is when its a single parent or parents going through hardship and struggling to keep their children safe and happy? And never when it's monsters who are truly abusive? Wow...just... I guess someone else finally noticed.
This brings tears to my eyes. How can so many be so cruel to him for practically no reason? All that kind lunch lady wanted to do was get that child fed. What a cruel world we live in. 🥺I hope he’s at peace and with God now. 🙏
God sure didn't help him when he was here on earth. What makes you think God, who isn't real in the first place, cares about the boy now? You religious people are weird.
They probably had screwed up childhoods themselves and wanted to take out all their bitter resentment on someone who couldn't fight back. If this boy had lived he probably would've ended up being just as cruel.
@@blackosprey2219 You can’t say that. Doesn’t always work out that way. Quite the opposite often happens. You overcompensate for the lack of empathy and compassion you received.
Book: “A Boy Called It” His mother starved him as well and did not allow others to feed him either. The abuse was extensive and horrific. No child should be abused like this.
I read that book and it's sequel in junior high. There were times when I had to put it down because of how it angered me. I still remember some of the f'ed up things his mother made him do.
How did his mother find out he was eating? That’s my question ?and not let him eat it didn’t cost her anything. This is really sick his parents did this.🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸🙏😢
WhT happened to his evil stepmother and father??? Did they get convicted of murder? They should get the death penalty!!! Also, where was his real mother???
DCF should be Arrested as well. They had one job to do protect the child! They are looked at a higher standard in the court system with a failure like that a judge needs to also, be the voice of the child by giving them prison time for justice for Gavin. Courts start holding DCF accountable we wont see as many failures
When are we going to stop people from abusing and killing kids????? Everyday 3 or 4 that we hear about and others I am sure we do not but all abusers and killers need to be stopped and any future ones will think twice before doing it!!! RIP DEAR SWEET BOY. 😔😡
The system for children is broken no matter where you go! I'm in Ontario, and to report to CAS here is a nightmare. They just don't want to do the paperwork!
It's horrible what the parents did to him and yet child services did the same thing in a different way....absolute neglect from both sides. His death is on their shoulders. Government agencies need to be held accountable.
As long as republicans remain in power, that won’t happen. The republicans in Arkansas, Missouri and Mississippi have rejected free school lunches and breakfast programs offered by the federal government at no cost to the state. They said that there was no need for them as they didn’t motivate people to work hard.
@@richardbeckenbaugh1805If the administrators did not make such huge salaries that money could be trickled down to teachers salaries and free lunches.
That this can still happen in our country is absolutely sickening! Even when people like this lady and her co-worker tried to help they are stopped and nothing is done for the child.
That should've been obvious to everyone. My family does K-12 homeschool and our parents used to file false papers with the government to pretend that we were being fed and educated properly and drilled us on what to say to case workers, and our mom even hinted at her and our dad planning to shoot them if they tried to take us. I was visibly malnourished and my teeth even turned beige and went back to white after we could afford groceries again. It was BAD. We were and still are so many levels of fu ked (I don't want this to get deleted). Some of us wanted to "punch our ticket" at oddly young ages like 4 and 9. Our parents made a big deal about how they have the absolute right to do (almost) whatever they want to us and no one else is allowed to help. After growing up like that, I think homeschool needs to be tightly regulated, with at least yearly and possibly quarterly one-on-one visits with a social worker that are recorded and stored in a secure government archive to be shown in court if something bad happens at home so no one can say they didn't know, regular doctor visits, state tests, and making sure (again in private) that the kids don't want to be in school and aren't being kept at home against their will to hide or isolate them or for free labor (like the kids raising each other and cleaning the house so mom can stay in bed all day).
@@mangjitnijjhar1390sorry.. that is very sad. I think a lot of people are too lazy or afraid to report bad situations. I don’t know…but the protocols need to drastically change and people need to be held accountable for not reporting the obvious.
Is there a way that DCFS can check on the welfare of children about whom they have had referrals sent to them and who are not in school anymore, but who are being “home schooled”? There must be follow up. Is DCFS short staffed? Let the community know! We would all help. The other young children in that home need to be removed and placed in a loving home. May justice be done., though late.
Near my hometown a child was found dead, they said the child went to school and would ask the other kids for food because he was starving, the report said they were trying to determine who his family was. I read that in the newspaper and ive never forgotten.
If depriving a child of food part of an assessment in child abuse they should make it instead part of a lethality checklist for child abuse cases. Food deprivation should be a serious red flag that a child is in immediate danger. My heart goes to the lunch ladies.
D c f should have been held accountable for this little boys death. This horrible service failed this little boy Miserably. So why have them if they're not going to do their job. They're as responsible as the boy's parents.
Yet another case where a child is starved, made to do harsh punishments, not allowed to use the bathroom & monitored in a room with no bedding, lying in the fetal position & clad only in a diaper. TWO years previously, he’s digging in the garbage as he’s starving & yet nothing is done. Current phone texts reveal this was planned torture, one meticulously orchestrated by his dad, stepmother & much older brother. We’ve seen these scenarios over & over again. Shame on the school, DCFS & government administrations that allow such abuse to continue!!! RIP, beautiful boy. 💔
I too work in a school cafeteria. They have many stories of children not eating. One young girl cried because she was hungry and her mother told her not to eat because she owes money. Myself and another lady put money on her account. She was so thankful. Cafeteria workers and school staff do it all the time. We pay for kids lunches.
This is so sad. This crappy family didn't deserve this precious child. If only these kinds of monsters, called parents, who supposedly don't like their kids, would think about the lengths they're about to go to to prove they don't like this child. Dear supposed parents: you abuse your children bc you don't like them, but you're willing to spend the rest of your life behind bars for them? Definitely not out of love, but to prove a point. To who? Yourself? Make it make sense!!!
I thank GOD that Gavin now and forever more throughout all eternity has a full belly and has more love than he can comprehend in heaven in the arms of our wonderful SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST
God should have kept him safe in the first place. If he is truly all knowing and all powerful but did nothing to stop this, he's a monster. At least DCFS has the excuse of being underfunded and understaffed.
The picture of Gavin got my attention first when I was scrolling, he looks so much like my oldest did at that age, such a beautiful kid, breaks my heart to find out what he went through, the lunch ladies cared more than Gavin’s own family and DSS, the system is definitely broken.
