Cars and Humor! I just laugh with Bill saying unpolitical correct things, but true for the context!!! I just miss those times when people said what they felt, those times were honest!
"...and look at these cushions from a bordello under the hood" (6:25) You sir, know how to take the wind out of the sails of anyone. Bravo! :) What a wonderful review of this car. Your sense of humour combined with an understanding of the era and the pedigree makes for a very entertaining and educational video. Very well done. Thank you!
Dear Bill, I enjoyed your video on RR as well as the other cars and trucks. When I retire for the second time, I will buy my second and file car at your place. You have a vast knowledge of what your selling. Keep up the good work.😊
Elliott G D No, sho in fact does not have wings. I spent 15 years working for a private collector that had nothing but Red Badged Rolls Royce. And, from the RR website: An icon is born In 1909, Eleanor Thornton’s presence was crystallised in the form of an ornamental figurine, by the artist Charles Sykes. A figurine that, to this day, is an exclusive addition to every Rolls-Royce motor car, to encapsulate the pursuit of personal liberty, and freedom from conformity. Challenging the social conventions of the time, her appearance became instantly iconic. Known from then on as the Spirit of Ecstasy, she leans forth towards the wind, arms outstretched, her dress billowing as if in flight. A symbol of dreams - of energy, grace and beauty - the Spirit of Ecstasy embodies the heights pursued by a unique and progressive group of friends. And it remains a tribute to their vision and everything their timeless legacy stands for.
Nice review indeed. These older models make fine club cars ....definitely not an every day driver. This car appears to be in excellent condition for its age. Thanks for posting.
Never thought much of these cars as i never figured I'd ever get near one. Had the chance to work on a couple mid '70's silver shadow models and kind of really fell in love with them. They're seriously well thought out, the way the window motors work, all the latching, brake system, chassis, all very serviceable and made to last, built from a different mindset. I'm a mechanic on mostly motorcycles, but when i work on cars I've usually worked with exotics and european cars. I would really love to have one someday, just for the smell of the interior and having fun just taking care of it. If you can't work on your own cars, and even for a lot of shops that work on everyday cars, these are not for you! After working on newer audi owned bentleys, I was totally unimpressed, they're just crap, Lexus is a far better choice..The new Rolls one customer owned was almost completely unserviceable, you had to take it to a dealer just to get warning lights turned off for needing the oil topped up. And they're just like everything else now..the old ones were so much different.
Agree with you except well thought out. 🥴 the brakes on these is a f'ing joke, and the wiper motor placement makes me want to smack the whiskers off the British chap who thought it was a good place for it.
@@LynxStarAuto I went through the craziness of a full brake flush on one, being as i've done tons of hydraulic and brake work over the years, like any different system it just took patience and good instructions. As for the wiper motor, I didn't mess with that, but have done some really pain in the ass wiper systems when i was working in car restoration, what GM was thinking with all the cable routing, or ford with 40's lincolns with the chain drive wipers, jesus..Seems wiper systems are considered an after thought on cars.
Emily has always been a nymph, not an angel. And her name was actually Eleanor, not Emily. Miss Eleanor Thornton modeled for the sculptor, Charles Sykes.
I should add that while all that padding under the bonnet does cut down on engine noise, the primary purpose was to protect the paint from the heat of the engine. Without the padding (insulation) the engine heat would be enough to cause the paint to peel.
I've been wanting a Rolls from this era ever since a local used car dealer had one about 5 years ago. The guy was buddies with my grandfather and he let me drive it. It was an 85 Silver Spirit. It was two tone blue/silver with blue leather with silver piping. The car was immaculate and had about 80k on it. I believe it sold for around $10,000. Regardless of maintenance cost if one ever pops up for sale and I actually happen to be in the financial postion to buy it I probably will. Then again I also want a 60's-70's Cadillac, another 2003+ Town Car, and too many other cars to list.
Since Lloyd George? Really? You must be a historian ;) This is very, very beautiful - pristine, in fact - example of what I think (like you) is the last real Rolls Royce. This is also one of the most hilarious - and also informative - car reviews I've ever "RU-vidd". Very many thanks and Merry Christmas (from England) :)
For a car this expensive, that buzzer REALLY has got to go in favor of a chime and Rolls-Royce REALLY should have used a VERY gentle chime sounding like the one in the Mitsubishi Station from the early 80s.
For the sake of trivia, Rolls and Royce had their first meeting at the Midland Hotel in Manchester, England. I walk past it every day on my way to the office and there is a nice plaque on the wall presented to the hotel by RR to mark the significance in 2004 - 100 years after they first met.
I never pay Rolls much attention, but this is a BEAUTIFULLY stunning Rolls. Love the black, the wheels...then that red trunk, OMG! That looks like the same year W140 I have.
responding late. Seen so many of these in down-market condition, but this one is spectacular. the new owner will be one lucky man. the Shadow was THE RR for me, but am now really liking this gen as well...esp when they're this nice.
I had an 88 Rolls and replaced the quad lights with Euro lights and you are correct, they look MUCH better but not only that, the Euro lights produce a much brighter beam so they are also a lot safer. Only U.S. models of the 88 Spur came with quad lights apparently something about the laws here prevented RR from shipping them with the much better Euro lights.
I had a 1985 Silver Spur. It was wonderful when it was infrequently running right. Unfortunately that wasn’t too often. If you want a large piggy bank this is the ticket. You will always being putting $$$ in it. Big $$$.
Hi beautiful car. All 1988 Silver spur are SZ series or there are others and why those are special comparing with others if there are different series too. Series meaning the Vin number ,or how we could identify it?. Thanks. PS could you recommend a source to buy something similar ?
I must say i have a little boner thing going on here ! W 140 , W 124 and that Rolls on the same spot.Really Bill ? If i were a wealthy person i would buy them instantly.
It is possible to have a lot of tranny trouble, if you get a cheap tranny to begin with. Most dealerships will not warranty them, especially if they are hourly or just. Straight off the street! I got into a little trouble myself one time down there in Florida. I told the judge I left on vacation and came back on probation.
I love the front end quad headlights and grill. I'm not loving the rims. I like hubcap with color coded circular strip. I love the rear end light configuration. Excellent classy luxury color combo. I don't like the ugly steering wheel. Sometimes, including today's models, the dashboard controls are outdated.
The great thing about these cars is if you can't afford a new onemost people would not know what year it is they would just say oh that's a Rolls-Royce
I’m Glad they stopped using that radio. Pretty hard to have your nose up in the air when u have the same sound system as a Chevy celebrity or GMC vandura cube van 😆
Excellent observation. As one owner told me "You may be purchasing a 20-thousand dollar car, but you will be maintaining a 120-thousand dollar car! The value of the car may have dropped over the years, but the parts have done just the opposite!" I had an 88 Spur and in the 5 years I owned it I easily spent as much on maintenance as I did to acquire the car! Much of that cost involved improvements I made that were not really necessary, such as removing the quad lights and installing Euro lights, but there were things like repairing window motors that were too slow that had to be done.
Können Sie empfehlen Medikamente für Furz und Durchfall? Ich Furz wie eine große Trompete. Vollen Klang, wie ein Kaiser Furz. Mein Durchfall fließt wie ein Fluss!
Never understood why RR went so overboard with luxury and refinement in their cars and then put such a cheap looking steering wheel in them. Thankfully RR has improved their interiors on what they produce today.
I loved the steering wheel on my RR motor cars. They were both very skinny and had a unique feel to them. Yes, they looked "different" but they felt just right to your hands.
True and the Everflex roof is a major pain to deal with because they tend to begin rusting under the roofing material. If considering a Spur I would certainly look for one without the Everflex roof.
By the mid-eighties RR had finally started to get up to speed with modern technology. Up until then you had to drag them kicking and screaming to update the systems. By 1998 they were really turning out some up-to-date stuff. Watch out for pelican shit! The damned birds won't discriminate!
