On this episode of The Midnight Society, I look back at season 3, episode 2 of "Are You Afraid of the Dark?": The Tale of Apartment 214. Midnight Society member Kiki tells a tale about a young girl who moves into a new apartment with your mother, only to discover some strange occurrences in the apartment next door.

This episode was honestly just sad. I felt so bad for Madeline. :'( The moment where she reveals the day she died stuck with me. Can you imagine the misery and pain of dying alone and reliving that moment continuously year after year? Then to make a new friend and have them betray you? It's depressing.

It stuck with me as well. I must have seen the episode when I was about 10. I remembered the bit when Madeline shouted "it was the day that I died" and the part when she says how important it is to make new friends. I watched the film "Tarot" today and something brought back a memory of this. I tracked down the episode on RU-vid and watched the key bits. I wonder if this is why I always do what I say I'll do.

I suspected that she was a ghost as soon as she vanished, and the fact the crabby Russian landlord said “No one live in 214! No one has lived there for YEARS!”

Watching this episode actually literally made me cry back in the day and it still does, upon recently rewatching it. I totally sympathize and empathize with both Stacey and Madeleine. I found their friendship quite touching and how many times do I wish my Nanny (my Dad’s Mom) could come back and we could continue to spend time together and I’d lean on her as my guide again. This episode does raise the point about not to abandon our family and friends who are our elders. If the decision was to be made between hanging out with Angela and Madeline, I’d honestly rather hang out with Madeline - dead or alive. I also feel bad for Madeline that her jerkass family basically getting caught up with themselves and not even coming by to check on her regularly. Agreed Vader. BTW, three quibbles - One - As epic as he is - Tibold has more of a Swedish look and name but talks Russian or Slavic? I guess he’s part Russian??? Second - Why didn’t Stacey simply tell Madeline after she told her Mom she was going to the Battle of the Bands? It wouldn’t have taken that long. Third - “Ghostbusters” amen. In my opinion, I love this episode and for it to make an old fart 💨 like me cry, that’s rare and special for a movie ot TV episode to do and I agree - I think Stacy’s parents should have gotten back together. Do we really need yet another broken home AYAOTD or hard hearted adults? You claim she cares about her daughter but her actions show she clearly doesn’t care as much as she says she does... I mean to dress nice and go to dinner with your husband and speak cordially again while not intending to get back together? Why? Did he say he wasn’t getting back together? Did he hit you? Did he cheat on you? Hmmm... could it be that Stacy’s Mom just being an unforgiving douche canoe? 🤔 🧐 Anyway, solid episode and great review and thanks to this episode, I’m down with having a nice cup of tea for real. (Mmmm Butterfly Pea Tea 🍵 🫖 - Yes, that is a real floral tea and guess what - it naturally changes colors when you add lemon juice (it turns from blue to pink/purple) or saffron (turns from blue to green) and if you add hibiscus, it turns wine colored! Kid friendly “wine” - don’t give real wine to kids... unless you live in France.. vive la 🇫🇷! ) Lastly, if it were a God permitted possibility to live forever in your old home when dead and pick and choose who lives in it - Heck yeah! I would do the same! Madeline clearly took notes from The Living and the Dead - Harmonious Lifestyles and Peaceful Co-Existence Handbook from “Beetlejuice”. Right on, Madeline! Can’t wait for the next review - it’s gonna be a sharp one!

I think I'm just so used to adults dismissing the kids or not believing them on this show that any time one of them shows any kind of support, like believing that her daughter is not crazy, I just count that as "they care," but yeah, she's not a great parent.

In regards to the French kids drinking wine comment; the show is a French Canadian produce show. So, I think does explain a bit more liberalism to show as to how kids behave and act compared to other shows, especially today. Even in the 90s with more of the free-range kids, the kids are you afraid of dark always acted 5 years or so more mature than they're given age, when comparing to American kids. Something I've always enjoyed.

A beautifully written episode, yeah it has its plotholes like the tickets thing LOL, but still one of their top ten. This story made an innocent elderly woman scary, but at the same time it was heartfelt. Madeline is right that breaking a promise is one of the worst things you can do to a friend, especially in this day and age.

This reminds me of A Haunting episode also set in Canada. Demon masquerades as a little ghost boy named Joseph, slowly possessing Bob, a troubled guy who practiced Wicca. His roommate tries to help Bob, seeking religious intervention. Unfortunately ol' Robert suffers the same, church aversion issue Damien did in The Omen, so, it's a no go. Episode concluded with roommate lady leaving the apartment, getting confronted face to face by "Joseph" revealing he was the same demon who terrorized her as a little girl. As for Bob? Disappeared. Never heard from again...

That definitely sounds much darker than this was, but wasn't A Haunting meant for adults anyway, so that makes sense.

@@JackOfAllNerdsShow Indeed it was. Not a perfect show. They'd often twist other faiths & mythologies to fit into a Christian mold. Example: the Egyptian deity Sobek is now a demon possessing some bespectacled schmuck, even though, at certain times in that same episode, he's referred to as a god too. Then again, I suppose they were running with Paradise Lost logic: every other god & goddess is actually a fallen angel. Regardless, I still quite enjoyed the show. It had a very creepy atmosphere, unnerving musical score, not to mention a suitably ominous narrator. Dude could make ANYTHING sound terrifying. Overall, 8/10.

I never really liked this episode. As a kid I always thought Stacy was kind of a dick, the way she just shrugged off Madeline on the day he promised to visit. Even as a kid, I had the common decency to visit a few minutes then apologizing is saying I have to go, thinking an older lady would understand I would want to hang out with a kid my own age. As an adult I realize the thing that threw me off about this episode is a tone. The window scene is a perfect scare, but totally it does not fit in with the rest of the episode or Madeline's character. Why was she scared her friend Stacy like that? The ending also makes no sense to me because even I had the awareness knowing that Stacy was going to move out eventually and that apartment living tends to be temporary. I also always wondered when I started getting older and watching this episode on repeat, when I was about 11 12ish what is Madeline walks in on Stacey when she has "alone time"? Is the old lady always there? Now that she has company does she ever walk about the town and see how things have changed since she's been dead? The one thing I always do fine truly terrifying about this episode is the location. Those blue and black doors kill it. Great find by the show's location department.

All great points. The ending is definitely problematic, but I think they did the best they could with their limited show time. But anything involving a ghost friend is going to be awkward. They are essentially watching you at all times. Not a fun thing to think about. I think we all reflect a bit of ourselves onto characters when we aren't given enough information, which can be hard to do in 22 minutes. I saw Stacy as the kind of shy kid that doesn't make friends easily, which was me at a young age. I remember when I was a teenager, we were a host family for a Japanese foreign exchange student and when we would go to the events will all the exchange students, I became Mr. Popular. A bunch of the girls liked me and I didn't know how to process it. I was so overcome by the situation, I couldn't decide who I liked and hurt everyone as a result. I think this is how I saw Stacy's behavior because of my own experience. She wasn't good at making friends so when she gets that, seemingly out of nowhere, invite she doesn't think about what is right because she's overcome by getting asked to go in the first place. Now, I'm not excusing her behavior, or my own, just explaining how I perceived her actions differently than you did. At the end of the day, you are correct, she should've stopped by Madeline's, right after she told her mom about the concert, to explain the situation before heading off.

I too am confused about the ghost rules for Madeline. Apparently, she only appears to Stacy, at certain times. Not my favorite episode, or Kiki story, though still memorable for the mood, use of sound/music, and environment. Great review vid! #SnickFan #90sKid4Ever

@@JackOfAllNerdsShow Faster pacing, and more scares, besides jump scares. Definitely dont hate it and one of the sweeter episodes. Good for variety, though not the scariest "antagonist" of the series. #AreYouAfraid

@@robroush2142 yeah, I do think Madeline was scary when she did go all "angry ghost" but she only has two quick scenes like that and the resolution is pretty anti-climatic so I do see your points. I think a more intense climax with the same resolution would've helped.

That was a pretty good episode. Not one of my top ten favorites, but still pretty good. I personally thought that Madeline overreacted, as it’s a bit unfair to hold a kid to a promise such as that. Suppose she had to see a family member in the hospital from a medical emergency? What if she got sick? However, it can be understandable for her to be upset when it happened on a day that was the ten year anniversary of what happened to her and that can be painful. Also to be fair, Stacey should have slipped a written note under Madeline’s door.
