Minquin is an oasis town wedged between two Chinese deserts: Badain Jaran and Tengger. A natural barrier between the two, which must be preserved at all costs.
Today, this boundary is disappearing and the sand is rushing into a breach: the Mouth of the Tiger. If the immense masses of sand from these two deserts were to merge, the flow of sand falling on Beijing would increase significantly, and the city would pay dearly.
An army of farmers is waging a war against the sand in an attempt to put the brakes on the desert.

Based on the lumber that is being exported by China from areas restored during the green wall project not very well. Most of the trees seem to have a higher rate of insect and disease infestation compared to trees produce in other areas . They also have shown higher signs of stresses related to lack of adequate water and nutrients

According to the latest statistics, China has made significant progress in desert afforestation and management over the past few years. Specifically, till 2023, China completed afforestation covering approximately 2.424 million acres, improved grassland through planting grass on about 2.653 million acres, and successfully treated desertified and rocky desertification land covering approximately 1.156 million acres.

The Chinese are failing miserably. Corruption is rampant, and prohjects fail long before they are even completed. Many projects are based on "the look of things" rather than a deep understanding of reclamation/restoration. Bribes and communist ideology over common sense also hampers success. The Loess Plateau has been the only long term success, and the current leader messed that too...

It amazes me how we can't enjoy video's like this without someone in comments relating it back to politics, without any kind of source or just outright jealous that this country is doing something about a environmental problem. Let us celebrate these achievements of building greenwalls / reforestation wherever it's happening , because in the end it will benefit the local people and YOU in broader sense as citizen of this planet we all live on.

Yes. They are having great tree losses where they planted monocultures of trees by the road. The lack of plant diversity is is harming soil life. Zero animals go into these places and that harms it further.
@DBT1007
@DBT1007 2 месяца назад
In the first place, there are only few trees that can survive the desert condition 😅. So these plants are the most resistant ones. 8:49 you can hear the different species of trees. It's not monoculture. Also, these regions probably originally desert for thousanss of years. So, no native plants. Edit: and also, everything has process. They just planting big trees. The shrubs will come later naturally. And othee plants too. It's all natural. And with steps They plant big trees first to give shades to the ground so the other plants can grow.
@b_uppy
@b_uppy 2 месяца назад
@DBT1007 They were planted for their use once cut, rather than "best tree for the site." Additionally these are a monoculture, and these trees are already dying out due to disease. If they had planted pioneer species, such as Prosopis, (mesquite) these trees might have acted as a nursery to other plants and animals, but it failed. Zero additional plant or animal life has come in. To come in far at all, they risk death.
