Bears are so beautiful and their ferocious (our perception and fear of their abilities) innocence about them is magnificent. They're so innocent, doing what they were designed to do but can be so violent and gruesome at the same time.. it's eye opening to ponder. They're right though, to act bigger and loud around a black bear, almost always scares them away. Always watch your surroundings for momma and babies. Moms are a bit feistier. A brown bear is a different story. Play dead, don't move or scream, no matter if they're sniffing udging or trying to get you to move. Any bear: Just never climb a tree, turn your back or run unless there's shelter in close proximity (even then he will run at you, that shelter better be within a few feet and bear far enough away if you're going to try it. And don't stay next to the door if it's not reinforced.) They say to play dead with a grizzly too but that's not always the right thing to do either. A grizzly is something that will attack and eat you no matter if he's just ate. It's all in their mood, timing and you and your scent or your movements. If you play dead, especially with a grizzly it is going to play with you, no doubt, just to see if you're alive. Again, don't scream or kick around (it will hurt and be scary. You better be praying). Recently we've seen a video circulating of a grizzly foaming at the mouth walking right next to people on a trail and they just BACKED to the side of the trail, kept their eyes on him calmly and stayed still-ish. They were even talking a little bit and were videotaping. It ended up just walking down the trail, pass them, stopping looking down the other trail and he turned around and went back the other way. They were fine, the bear definitely seen them. It's was an awesome video. But this may not be the case for everyone. if you have a gun or a knife and a bear is coming at you, have no mercy. If you're out in the woods or live in a heavily populated area with bears always carry your locked & loaded gun, knife or bear mace with you. Always. If you go out into the woods without anything you are being irresponsible and asking for trouble. Please don't be one of those people who are scared of knives and guns and don't want to hurt wildlife... None of us do but if push comes to shove it's either them or us. if you have other people with you don't be selfish and take their lives into your own hands. Be smart always have weapons. Good luck.
