Today, we're going to take a look at the Tatara Masamune, a beautifully machined razor which offers great shaves, lots of options, but at a substantial price.
Dear Nick, I’m so grateful you got me into double-edged safety razors two years ago! This saved me a ton of money, significantly improved my shave quality and also made my life easier in terms of recycling. Thank you so very much!
Your review a few years back of the Merkur 23C, brought me in to the world of double-edge safety razors, and I haven't looked back since. I could see someone spending more on something beautifully machined like this. Heck the money, I've saved on cartridges alone, would cover it (if I hadn't already spent that and more on knives!).
Hi Nick, I am new to the knife collecting hobby, but I have been an avid DE shaver/collector for a number of years. So cool to see that you review safety razors as well.
What is up Guy's!!!!! OH, SORRY, Wrong person. Anywho, FYI: If you wipe your blade with a dry towel after each shave, you won't have rust on your blades or razor. Blades last longer too. Yes, rust breaks down the edge of the blade. I got that info from a radio host that was a cheap skate and his show was all about stretching the dollar. Can't remember the guys name but his theme song was unforgettable. It was "She drives me crazy" from the Fine Young Cannibals. And yes, your welcome! That song will stay in your head and will probably get a Brazilian Hits once folks start reading the comments! $170-$250! Are you out of your mind? I can buy a 5 year supply of Mach 18's for that price. Great video Nick. Thanks.
Nick, you get points for being a fellow wet shaver. Bonus points for using Feather blades (one of the sharpest on the market) but Feathers with an open comb... that borders on insanity LOL. I started my DE experience with a Merkur 37C slant bar back in 2004 and used that daily for over a decade. I got tired of the difficulty in cutting my sideburns straight with the slant bar so I migrated to a 1950 Gillette Red Tip Super Speed, then a 1959 Gillette Fatboy (adjustable) and I've used that ever since, it's simply an outstanding razor. My Go-To blade is the Israeli Personna, it's sharp enough for my beard and still a very smooth, comfortable edge.
I just ordered this with the PV coating with Open comb. I have a Feather asd2. I love it. This razor like the Feather is high quality and metal and has a great stand. Also once I figured out quality razors never do t look new and last forever and also collectible like funko pop dolls I mean the line of diminishing returns becomes less flat. You have to factor in possible resale. This will keep way more value over time than a muker.
That looks pretty awesome. I got the Feather razor after your review on it, and I love it (much more than the merkur I had before that). If it wasn't for the feather, I'd def be in the market for this tatara.
Hi Elijs, I own this Tatara Masamune with both combs. I also own an AS-D2 by Feather. This Masamune is far superior razor to the Feather. I find the Feather far too mild and I get sore trying to get really smooth. Plus my first AS-D2 had blade alignment issues. The two I have now aren't absolutely perfect either. The Tatara Nodachi is also a great razor. Dave.
I bought the cheapo you reviewed and have never gone back to Gillette plastic cartridges. Thanks for saving me money and hassle. They literally created their own problem to solve because the safety razor is worlds better.
I usually shave with my para 3. Im a machinist by trade and from what I can tell that is a good finish no tool marks from what I can tell. Those dots would take some machine time as well, also judging by the fit of that collar those were probably machined with a tight tolerance.
Feather blade ... Guessing you have thick brambles for beard hair! They are too harsh for me. Love the middle of the pack blades like lord classic or shark super chrome.
I swear by my Mühle safety razor. Well priced, well made, great history to them and made here in Germany. But Merkur makes some great stuff around the 70€ mark as well and is even made right here where I live in Solingen Germany.
Hi Nick, on the off chance you see this comment I’d like to recommend the Rex Supply Co Envoy. American made, 316 stainless, medium aggressive, 3 piece, cnc machined, excellent knurling, serialized in step with the Gillette date code, has a lifetime warranty, and man is it handsome. From one wet shaver to another, it’s a great razor. Later
I had the envoy. It doesn't grip the blade well and so has a lot of chatter. No Bueno. I returned it, and got the Blutt BR-1, with 1.20 mm gap. My absolute end game razor. If anyone is interested to get it, don't get with less than 1.20 mm gap. It is super smooth with this gap due to unparalleled blade clamping. Super smooth and super efficient.
Like always, great review. I think I could listen to Nick review just about anything and enjoy it. That said, I shave my head 4 times a week. I use Defender razors exclusively. They do a great job at a close shave, do not clog with my thick black hair (mostly black, the grey is quickly taking over). It takes about 2 minutes in the shower with the wife's conditioner for lube. No mirror. I spend less than $5 every 3 months. I can appreciate the machining, but I think I'll pass on this one.
My brother in law got me an old school safety razor for Christmas. I used it to shave my neckline the other day. ( I'm growing a beard.) It's not this brand but it worked way better than I expected.
Please review the PMP Knives Alpha Beast and tell everyone why it sucks. 400 bucks for a knife that's so poorly designed it might as well be made by Mtech. And in D2? Seriously. I would buy and send you one for review but I'd regret my whole life. There's actually youtubers praising it.
You should check out the Blackland Vector, fantastic single edge razor with incredible machining. I have to force myself to use my other razors just for the variety. Both of these (as well as other more expensive razors) are enthusiast tools, like a $300 knife. No one "needs" it but many are willing to pay for it and for good but perhaps not the most practical reasons. So am I, since I have have a Masamune on the way.
A knife collector will gladly pay hundreds for a high quality knife. A razor collector will gladly pay hundreds for a high quality razor. Basically the same people enjoying different things.
I used to use a safety razor since I started shaving before disposable razors were popular. I've been using an electric razor for at 20+ years. Blasphemy! I've used a Braun Series 7 for at least 10 of those years. Great shave, a lot less mess, no shaving foam or soap, and the replacement heads last me about 18 months for $35.
I feel like I should second his point about the superiority of DE razors. If saving the world he plastics waste doesn’t convince you (it should, at the risk of being preachy) be convinced that-as a person who shaved for a decades with the “Mach series”-this sort of shaving is better (easier, etc…) in every single way.
This razor sells for life 170$ and still you get that awful blade fitting with some edge exposure to the sides of the head.. even a 40$ Mühle has perfect blade fitting.. anyways other than that it's a gorgeous machine 👍
Hello, sorry, I have to pass on this one. Just found my personal gem (my RAD exit razor) in the stainless steel cnc-machined "greencult rasierhobel" by fairschenkt (made in austria) - efficient like a R41, but very very smooth with an informative blade feel. And the best thing, it's similary priced as the Merkur 34C. This greencult razor has the potencial to become a legend among wet shavers. Has anybody else tried the greencult safety razor ?
@@fiveoranges Hi Ty the Greencult Rasierhobel is marketed towards ladys inside the zero waste movement and it's a bubble male wet shavers have no contact with. the company owner is a young woman and she priced this razor so friendly not knowing the market. There is also an etsy shop you can order from. The head is 40g (around 120g with handle), so the longer handle (10,5 x 1,2cm) makes sense for a perfect ballance. I also like the machined texture of the top cap with its anti-stick characteristic. My former favorite razors (Apollo Mikron V2, HLS Taiga, Timeless Ti95, HLS Collibri 1.3, Merkur Progress, R41) are in retirement now. Please, let me know about your experiences, when you have tried out !
Your wasting money on those disposables. Get a crappy safety razor and pack of feather blades for like 15 bucks... Will last you a year and better shaving results.
