A detailed review of the Trinitarian Bible Societies’ Westminster Reference Bible (KJV) in black calfskin, ISBN 978-1-86228-168-4 (9781862281684). The Bible features a 9.6 pt text in two narrow columns in verse-by-verse format with two columns containing 200,000 references in the margins, aligned nicely with verses.

I have just received my TBS Westminster Reference and think it looks gorgeous. Beautifully printed and gilded. No evidence of any ‘squeaking’ LOL. I have spent 10 minutes parting about 40 - 50 pages at a time - at both ends of the block - and gently flattening them down until I reach the middle, then repeating the process. (To loosen it a bit without any force.) No warping and no wrinkles so that’s all good. There is a perfect line matching of every line with it’s counterpart (on the reverse of each page) on every single page I have chosen - at random - at many points throughout the whole block. This goes for references too. I can, however, faintly see a minimal offset between the lines on a page and the lines two page numbers after it, but the opacity of the paper renders this very, very faint and not a distraction. It has ‘heft’ without being too heavy to rest comfortably on one palm. It is nice to read and i can read the font clearly, without strain, at table and desk height (on a desk/dining chair) and lap height (in an armchair). I have found no evidence, so far, of any inconsistency in print boldness. (Again, I have checked at quite a few randomly selected points throughout rather than every page.) For £56 UK - and free delivery - this is a steal. £30 less than a, heavily discounted, KJV Concord Calf-split (with it’s older fashioned and more inconsistently printed font according to most Concord reviews i have watched). Mine is a 2016 print. Anyway ... So far, so very nice! Thanks TBS, thanks Jongbloed and thanks to Eden Books here in the UK.

Love this Bible. I use it on a daily basis with my Tommy Chain. I got the giant print for the size of the marginal note font. The print size for the notes is highly readable. Can't recommend it enough.

First of all, absolutely LOVE the touch of Green Sleeves at the end of your vid. Wonderful! Have been on a bit of a journey for my next Bible purchase. First it was to be a Schuyler Canterbury, than a Humble Lamb Lion, and finally a Thompson Chain with a full yapp. Well, every time I turned around, l saw reviews of the Westminster Reference Bible. Decided to check it out. Have viewed a number of videos, including yours. I love refernce Bibles and my Tommy Chain. But based upon so many reviews, I have determined that the most practical addition to my collection should be the Westminster. Thank you so much for such a thorough vid and blessings to you.

As Airik1111 said the real number of references are over 200,000. Some have said 250,000.TBS combined the self interpreting Bible's references with the standard KJV references and put them all in one Bible.

Love the in-depth look you take us thru in these reviews. Comparing, contrasting & esp the comments - Like how the chain references can take you on a journey, maybe further than you wanted to go. Or how it's nice to read the KJV and just look up the words you don't understand like you would with another book. Very nice review, thanks for sharing! Really liked the music at the end also 🙏

Something I'd also mention: The designers appear to have checked the "small caps" box in InDesign or whatever software they used, rather than using true small caps for the word "Lord." Essentially, this means that the smaller capitals are simply scaled down versions of their larger counterparts, making the strokes considerably thinner. True small caps are included as part of the font (though it takes a few extra steps to use them) and compensate for their size with more bold strokes. It's a small typographical detail that has a huge overall effect on the Bible. I have a Zondervan large print KJV reference that does this and simply can't bear to read the Old Testament from it because of this problem. The TBS font isn't as bad as that used by Zondervan, but it's still quite noticeable to a font nerd like myself. Oh well. C'est la vie.

The new box says 200 thousand references now, Randy Brown says he contacted them and supposedly its 200,000. I can't wait to get the large print soon, its gonna be a close contender with the big boys😉 Its one of the finest prints I've seen esp at $60.

Someone corrected me on the number of references right after I posted this video, but now that comment is gone. Funny how that happens. I'm a bit skeptical about the large print edition. The paper is a bit on the floppy side now. I wonder whether they'll beef it up on the large print -- otherwise, turning a page might be like raising a sail on a frigate. Also, I hope the typeface is bolder at the larger font. I wouldn't want another unsatisfactory option like that 11 point Milo (Canterbury/Quentel). But time will tell.

So basically there are no downsides then? The ribbons a mm thicker? Mmmmeeerrr... The squeaking? Slap some leather cream on the covers. Font? It’s not a Turquoise but it’s large enough and clear compared to top premium bibles. I like my TBS Westminster Reference Bible, and I have taken so many notes in it that I ran out of blank pages to use, and had to use the side margins throughout the Bible. It's a great study Bible, and an awesome value at $75, considering the special features and quality of the Bible. One improvement TBS could make is to include at least 3 times as many blank pages for notes.

I have suggested to TBS that they offer a wide margin version. I'd love to have one. They could simply print the standard Westminster text onto their large print size Westminster paper and I'd be happy, frankly. I like this Bible just as good as the Concord, probably even better considering the price.

The Westminster does define some "obvious" words, but I think it's important to offer them. I'd rather have too many definitions than too few honestly. I struggle to come up with downsides on this Bible - it and the Windsor are probably the best KJV's out there today, at least in the price points they are sold at. Do you have a Windsor?

It’s 200,000. 🤔 I’m owner and past owner of Allans, Schuyler, Cambridge And Crossway. In my opinion this is premium. Aesthetic premium? No. But to those that can’t drop $200.00 on a new Bible it’s premium. Don’t get me wrong it’s purely an opinion. Much love to you brother and love your in depth review.

The notes and references columns, two of them, one per column, are quite nice, but the length of lines is so short that the eye has to dot back and forth a lot. I prefer somewhat longer lines. The Bible's width could be greater, to accommodate two notes-and- references colums at the outer edges of the pages, but, with greater wideness, the length of lines could be more "normal" (i.e., what I, at least, expect!).

Being a lifetime member of the T.B.S., a review like this is something that I greatly appreciate. Not just Cambridge and Oxford (excluding mention of the Scots) but also T.B.S. Bibles are among the purest and most significant ones available or from the past.

I enjoy narrow columns (~33 to 36 characters) myself, as is probably obvious from these videos. The Allan Longprimer has broader columns of text, but they're still acceptably narrow.

Probably more useful to get parallel bibles like kjv nkjv, kjv mev, kjv NLV (new life version) from barbour. Some bibles and study bibles have explanations for archaic words on the same page as the kjv text (some also make minor translation corrections). Companion Bible by E.W. Bullinger has explanations for many words in the margins. Newberry Reference Bible has explanations for many words in the left margin and right margin. KJV Scofield Study Bible III, Westminster Reference Bible have definitions for archaic words in the left margin and right margin. Life Application Study Bible has definitions after the text section. Holman kjv study bible has definitions in the footnotes. Rock Of Ages Study Bible, Henry Morris Study Bible, Reformation Heritage Study Bible, Defined KJB have definitions for archaic words in the footnotes Open Bible, KJVer sword, subject bible have end of verse definitions for archaic words. Thomas Nelson Study Bible has the definitions and alternate translations in the center column. Standard Lesson Teacher's Study Bible has explanations on the right column.

@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones 6 лет назад
Ryan, maybe someone who binds books will see your question and give an informed answer. Anything I would say would be a guess. For instance, for both edge-lined and paste-down Bibles, my guess is the card stock gives the liner something sturdy to attach to.

It stabilizes the book. You could imagine how quickly a Bible would fall apart if the leather cover were sewn or glued directly to the thin Bible paper.
