Nice work it's amazing what a swamp will protect, where a machine left round the back of a barn for the same amount of time that was"running when parked" is total junk. As it needs thousands more in parts and machine shop repairs than it's ever going to be worth to even get it running again let alone driving and working even for a museum with generous donations and help. Thanks for the update looking forward to more as visiting it isn't an option. Take care guys.

Once you guys get her running, keep an eye on the engine temp. There are two types of TD-24s, those with cracked heads and those that are about to have cracked heads. Having the all-in-one gas/diesel valvetrain is a neat idea, but it created a lack of real estate for coolant passages, and it was a real Achilles heel for these engines. Caterpillar's idea of a pony motor, IMO, was the better route to take.

Very good job! What amazes me is the time line of months instead of years to get it running again. Some one should do an in-depth explanation of the old International Harvester starting system of starting on gas and when engine is warm pulling the lever to close off the gasoline starting circuit hence raising the compression and activating the diesel injection.

Ok, after watching that i have got to learn how these engines ran starting with gas and then ending with diesel somehow. Crazy. How did water not get in the intake and the cylinders? The valves couldn't all be closed at the same time. And even then they aren't watertight. I can't imagine that engine wouldn't need a complete tear down with re-sleeving the cylinders. Tell you guys what, we will get the Edmund Fitzgerald up by summer, you think y'all could have 'er runnin by fall?
@richardmaurer9002
@richardmaurer9002 3 года назад
It’s quite simple. The heads have a remote chamber that is isolated by a single poppet valve. The carb is connected to this chamber via small passages cast in the head. When the compression release is pulled, three things happen. The poppet valve is opened, which lowers the compression ratio to 5:1. The butterflies in the intake manifold close off the main air passages, which all intake air thru the carb. Lastly, the ignition switch on the end of the butterfly shaft switches on the ignition. She will now run like an ordinary gasoline engine. When diesel operation is desired, the compression release is pushed in and the poppet valve closes, raising the compression ratio to 15:1 ; the carburetor and ignition are also shut off . At the same instant, the diesel speed control is raised to about halfway so fuel can be injected for diesel operation.
@richardmaurer9002
@richardmaurer9002 3 года назад
I should add that the spark plug is threaded into the remote chamber, so it won’t be fouled during diesel operation. Also the starting poppet valve does not continually open and close during operation, but remains stationary, whether in the open or closed position. It’s only purpose is to control the compression ratio. It is controlled by the operator via the handle thru the dashboard.
@littleoak6129

Nothing could be easier. Get her running on gas and after a minute or two, open the throttle and wait until white smoke appears at the stack. Not knowing what you are starting from, start at the tank and clean everything that the fuel flows through. Clean the petcock, use new filters (the filters are also bled with the engine running on gas) , the water trap should be spotless, and make sure there is oil in the injector pump. Ordinarily once the filters are bled , the rest of the system takes care of itself. But in the case of a dry start (rebuilt injector pump) , you may have to crack the high pressure lines at the injectors to hasten bleeding. If you still have no fuel at the injectors and you are certain you have the rest of the system clean, then the pump has some mechanical deficiency. Hope this helps
@richardmaurer9002
@richardmaurer9002 3 года назад
Josh Ryan, my explanation was under the assumption that the gasoline side of the engine is operational. It can be bled and started, even operated on a regular basis, with the gasoline side inoperative. But it is SOOO much harder that way. My advice would be to get the gas side running first, then 80% of the problem is behind you.

There is no separate engine , or “pony”. The same cylinders burn gasoline as they do Diesel fuel. The cylinder head with its unique induction system is the heart of this starting system.

@regsparkes6507 3 года назад
@@richardmaurer9002 Yes this one's the same at the TD-18 I ran, oh those many years ago. It was a pretty good set up I thought, no racket from those pony motors on the International TD's!

@@regsparkes6507 was this because the starters weren't strong enough to turn over the high compression diesel directly?
@regsparkes6507
@regsparkes6507 3 года назад
@@86FxBdyCpe Steve, this starting system was used because back in those days, it was easier to start and warm up the diesel engine. The gasoline fuel would ignite on much lower compression and therefore was easier to start. After warm up when we would switch over to diesel by 'throwing' a lever which would let the valves close fully, increasing the compression which is what diesel fuel needs to ignite/start and run. Sounds complicated maybe, but in fact was very simple, and effective too.
