The fresh faced, pre-stardom days! Sharon at 18, 19, 20, 21…she was dressed in the style of the classic stars in the ‘40’s and ‘50’s, with the hair as well. Brilliant. And then ‘64 or so comes around and the beautiful long blonde (and red) locks. And the bikini shots I’ve never seen. She had a chubby little tummy, and for some reason it’s cute as hell on her. Reminds me of an old girlfriend. She was so pale, I’m sure that was by design, to keep the sun off of her face until she got her big break, because once you damage the skin, it’s there forever. If she was around now it would be so cool to ask her questions on her website, etc. She’d be up in her 70’s, but would still be intimidating, I would imagine. Looks-wise, not her personality of course. Thanks again, George!

One of my few criticisms of Greg King's otherwise excellent biography of Sharon in 2000, is his light treatment of Phllipe Forquet. It was a turbulent relationship, and Sharon flew into a rage, which she rarely did, but when she did she really let it rip. This guy beat her up, on one occasion requiring hospital treatment. Finally Doris Tate stepped in because Sharon wanted to continue the relationship and Doris said no. Forquet left the US. But he physically assaulted Sharon, and in King's book he bemoans how the relationship affected him for years. Affected him! He beat her up. King lets him off too lightly, I suppose because of the interview. This was a toxic relationship, and Sharon went on to have another one with Polanski. That was her flaw -- dominant men, and it's sad. Pity she didn't stay with Sebring. He had his quirks, but he never treated her like that. It's part of her sad story.

What most people don't know, because it's never been reported or even addressed by Philippe in public (because he has refused to discuss the facts of the "assault" with the press), is that PHILIPPE beat up MARTIN RANSOHOFF, Sharon's "svengali-type" manager who had tried desperately to break up the couple. Sharon had taken off to New York with Forquet in late 1963 and they rented an apartment there. She was determined to marry Philippe and give up her career, but Ransohoff wanted repayment for all the money he had spent on nurturing her talents. He controlled her career at this point and promised to keep her out of pictures unless she ended it with Forquet. Philippe resented Ransohoff for the control he had over her and challenged Ransohoff many times over it. Philippe wanted Sharon to fly back to France with him and marry there, then try to rebuild a career on her own later down the road if that suited her, but they both also wanted children. Ransohoff rallied support from Doris, who agonized over Sharon possibly giving up her career and living abroad. One night, Ransohoff found out where in New York Sharon and Philippe were living and went to their apartment. Ransohoff ended up having a physical altercation with Ransohoff and a TV set was thrown, hitting Sharon, who had tried to intervene in the scuffle. Sharon wasn't seriously hurt, but bruised, and Ransohoff used photos of Sharon's injuries to make the case that Philippe was a danger to Sharon. Doris officially turned against him and he lost his contact with 20th Century Fox. Ransohoff had succeeded in driving the couple apart. Sharon was miserable for a time with Philippe back in Europe, but Ransohoff tried to make it up to her by finally letting her star in a film, which he decided would be the starring female role in TARZAN AND THE VALLEY OF GOLD. It's around this time she met JAY SEBRING, who encouraged her to forget Forquet and concentrate on her new career as a film actress. Later, Ransohoff upped the stakes and decided she'd be happier appearing in a more suitable role in 13 (EYE OF THE DEVIL). It seems he didn't approve of Sebring much either, but Jay was less of a threat to him. Philippe did one magazine interview where he talked about his love for Sharon and some of the arguments they had (which all stemmed from Ransohoff's interference in their relationship, but, that interview was later manipulated and Philippe was threatened with legal action and more sanctions leveled at his career which was already in shambles if he persisted, so he finally stopped talking about this period of his life for good. Philippe, around this time, became somewhat of a recluse and only confided in three people, his closest friend, the writer JOHN FOWLES, his co-star in WATERLOO, the actor ROD STEIGER, and Philippe's first wife, the fashion model LINDA MORAND, who he started dating in 1967 and married in 1970...after SHARON TATE's death. They all knew the truth of what happened from Philippe's own lips, but I'm telling you, he never intentionally hurt or beat Sharon. That's the truth.
