The Camorra is one of the oldest criminal institutions in the world, but how it functions in Naples is changing. New child criminal gangs, and the rise of stunting on social media, as opposed to the long-standing rule of omertà, means that the Camorra seemingly will never be the same.
VICE heads to the infamous Le Vele Di Scampia, and Parco Verde, to meet a child gang that operates there, and a social worker trying to prevent these children from ending up in the clan, prison, or dead. For the first time on camera, we will hear directly from Camorra members, speaking about how they recruit and use children.

The ending made me cry. Hearing a boy, 11 years old saying he would rather risk becoming a drug dealer to save his family from poverty than confide in his parents, is a terrible indictment of Italy's growing inequality and political corruption. P.S Give the journalist a pay rise, I think she connected with these boys with empathy and understanding better than most would have, and in return, the boys were more open and vulnerable with her. It was beautiful to see.

Unfortunately it's not just an Italian thing. You can see this happening, perhaps to a greater or lesser extent, across many ghettos and poor places across the world. Unfortunately, gangsters recognising and using the fearlessness and desperation of teenagers is not something new. I live in a tough area of London and they do the same thing here all up and down the UK. The rate of kids killing other kids is frightening and it's still not as bad as this area of Italy

The interviewer began to look at the last boy she interviewed like a sister or mother talking to her own brother, or son, but for the last time she’d ever know him as anything other than a hardened gangster/criminal choosing a lifetime of that path. I got teary eyed looking at her face in that moment, and into her eyes, because you could tell she wanted so badly to hug him, maybe even rescue him if she could, but then you see the reality of her powerlessness to help him show in how her face slowly emotes more and more into a restrained look of despair, sadness, and grief. The fixers, cameras and interviewer are world class in this. Thank you to everyone who made this insight in to these realities available to all, it's a real shame that when the only way to make money from drugs is focused on street pushers and not the international legalised pilots, it's going to be a long while until elders stop leading youths into battles where they are the only Victorias. I hope all these young "G's" will have other options in the very near future, and become an army for their community instead of preying on it and blaming it. ALL of those elders should be ashamed, yes we had hardships like no others but that is NO excuse to perpetuate and idealise a life that only benefits you. Be real men! Stop using kids! And kids they're not real men just because they have a gun, a few euros is all it takes, is that what life is worth?

Incredible documentary through and through, but one little detail I picked up that is especially powerful is the way they cut between the shots at 19:15 to compare/contrast the kids moving the flour across the table and the young cammoristi cutting and moving the lines of coke. Two different avenues of life, but the wrong one seems to have the more powerful grasp. Cinematic editing there.

19:39 ..... can't help thinking that this kid Mano has so much potential and intelligence....they say that still water runs deepest and even though he doesn't talk much and is the youngest you really get a sense of the drives, inner conflicts, loneliness, guilt, despair and desire both pushing and pulling them to and from this lifestyle that is masked by the bravado and humor of his friends....the materialist envy, the lack of opportunities, a childhood that never was a childhood and the resulting desire for respect and companionship forms a drain from which many can't escape but I hope he realizes that there is another way out with his intelligence and drive (especially because of these because I can't help but feel that the Camorra will recognize these values in him and make him a corrupted and dangerous man if he continues) if he studies and leaves for a place with more opportunities. Even if regular life is hard and less exciting, I wish him and all the rest of them the best in escaping their path....life oftentimes seems like a rushing river dragging you along a current you can't escape but there is always a choice...always

These poor kids are so misguided and taken advantage of by the worst excuse of an adult. Absolutely heartbreaking and hitting really close to home for me. I too was mislead and taken advantage of by much much older adults which lead to completely no child hood, an 8 year long battle with opioid addiction as well as countless other substance abuse problems, kleptomania , being sexually abused- all of these things happened before I even turned 12. I’m 21 now and approaching 2 years sober from all drugs, especially opioids. People like this are no one to look upto , they will use you until you are either useless to them because you either got caught too many times or were one of the lucky ones to understand where this path will take you , and therefore you stop before it’s too late. By then you will likely end up with severe trauma and depression, substance abuse disorders, and very upset parents. Best thing to do is leave all these goofy friends behind , seek help from your parents and a therapist , use every resource available to you to turn your life around and do something good for yourself.
