This was during their "Psychedelic Soul" Era. After the Acrimonious Split of Holland/Dozier/Holland Norman Whitfield (RIP) came along. Their collaboration was one of the most successful in Music. Through him they had 21 Top Ten R & B Hits 11 went to Number One. In many ways their Career paralleled The Beatles. They wore Dark Suits as did The Beatles did. The Beatles had their Psychedelic Period with Sargent Pepper and their Clothes and then The Temptations Fashions changed as well. The Beatles were very big fans of The Temptations. When they did their First Tour in 1964 they got a Welcome Telegram. Other UK Artists who revered them were Elton John & Rod Stewart whom they did collaborations with.

Eddie Kendricks voice is just so smooth and the notes he could hit are amazing. David Ruffin, Otis Williams, Dennis Edwards,Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin had one mike too sing into an blend theses six voices into perfect harmonies and leads is just incredible I grew up in the 60's listening to my stepfather's album collection and he had their albums and I was always blown away by theses guys the cool cats of soul because the temptations had it all singing, the moves and the skill set to make hit after hit. Find me some group pulling off this today. And yes I've listen to boyz to men and they are good but they will never be like the six members of the temptations.

I always loved how their voices blended. Eddie as the high tenor, David & Dennis as the lead baritone / tenor, Paul’s raspy baritone, Otis’ smooth mid range baritone, and Melvin’s bass. Magical harmonies.

Dennis Edwards and David Ruffin were never in the group together, Edwards was Ruffins replacement as he had developed an ego thinking he was the star of the group.

Strange, fun story, but 100% true. I lived in an east coast Ivy League city. 1970 was filled with riots and demonstrations in the city. I was 10 years old. My mother wanted me to have swimming lessons. So she takes this 10 year old blond kid to the inner city YMCA which was maybe 10 blocks from the riots. Each Thursday for 5 weeks I waited in the recreation room for her to pick me up. The young black guys were playing Ball of Confusion on a 45 and a small record player. Over and over again trying to get the lyrics. Today, my friends are amazed I can sing the song through word for word...........Thanks for pulling me out of naivety in the real world

7th grade 1970 was a time of a Ball of Confusion. Engaged in the Viet Nam War for reasons that became unknown was heavy controversy between us & the “establishment”. They came out with guns at Kent University & it seemed over for us. Nowadays is still a Ball of Confusion with our gov & corporations still trying to F us over & we can’t shut up a lunatic former president 😂 Eeegads…Nothing’s changed & This BadAss song still applies. You’re #12 that I’ve sang & danced Temptations steps to this song today… & 95% got the lyrics down 😊 I appreciate your covering this that has meant megatons during its play on the radio & thank you for your appreciating the best genre of music that I was lucky to be a part of. Back in my day, we had “Soul Power” & I Still miss my Soul Train. I felt I’d die if I didn’t get to dance that line, I wanted to so bad 😂😂😂😂😂 I’m still alive 😊 Hey Thanks Girl! Hey Scribe, 1n 1970 I was in 7th grade. Surrattsville Jr High. A block from Mary's House. But anyway, the lunch room juke box basically played this on a loop. Or Tears of a Clown. And we were 12 yr old white greasers in fake black leather jackets jamming Motown !

One of my first favorite songs. I was only 8 years old the Summer this came out, but somehow even with my limited understanding of life, the feel and the meaning of this song hit me deep. It still remains one of my all-time favorites, and is sadly, just as valid now as it was then. Human nature being what it is, this world may always be a Ball of Confusion.

The Temps were such a voice for Black America in the Sixties. And the great thing about them was they got played on white AM radio so it was a way for people like me who had no idea what it was like to be Black to have a window into what was going on in a world just breaking free from segregation. People know about MLK but they don't often know what he was fighting against. The world back then was segregated into Black and White not just by individuals who were prejudiced but by society itself. It's better now but we still have a long way to go especially when it comes to the police. Like you said we abolished Slavery but if we could overcome Slavery and Segregation then we can solve the problems of today. Dr King said you have to have a Dream so you can imagine a better world to come!

Music made in Detroit was identifiable as just that. And it wasn't just Motown. The Detroit Emeralds sounded like ...Detroit. Same for Memphis with Stax; same for Philly with Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff and Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson. Chicago soul: Walter Jackson, Curtis Mayfield. Even little ol' Muscle Shoals, Alabama from where Jerry Wexler pinched an entire band just so he could get 'that sound'. There's a lot more I'm leaving out. I feel so fortunate to have grown up with all the aforementioned. And thanks. I really enjoy your takes.

Ya this came out when the riots happened in the major cities. In Detroit were I am from it was the summer of 67 when Detroit had its riot. Lot of civil unrest. Lot of hate. Great song with lyrics that are spot on though. Great vocals.
