So many classic Temptations songs. Everyone's go-to is "Papa Was a Rolling Stone", and it is classic. My all-time favorite is "Just My Imagination". Phenomenal vocals, stunning arrangement.
in 1966 the Temptations had FOUR No.1 R&B hits. Every song they released that year was pure gold!!!!! They held the No.1 spot on the charts for 16 weeks, more than any other group going back to 1950 and until the Jackson 5 came along in 1970.
You guys are hitting my sweet spot with The Temptations. I’m a 61 year old white dude and I’m a MoTown maniac. This music played in our house all the time. My grandmother was a brilliant singer and she would make all of us sing all the harmonies. She bought me my first guitar when I was 5 and my first drum set at 8. I’ve been a musician ever since. God bless Mama Polly(everyone in our family called her Mama Polly) for pushing me to be the best version of myself. She passed on New Year’s Eve in 1997 and my sister and I performed My Girl at her funeral ❤
Growing up in Southern Ontario right next store to Motown these guys and all the other artists from this honeypot of musicians was a stroke of luck i will always cherish!!!
So much class. They were perfection with their voices, the choreography, the way they looked, everything. Living in Detroit we saw them many times performing at local clubs (before they got too big) and got to know them. They were the best. 👏👏🥰
The songs from Motown were a huge part of our lives in the 60s and 70s. We were blessed to have it all on the radio: Temptations, Zeppelin, Micheal, Yes, Tina, Floyd, Beatles, Stevie, Stones great great times to get high and love life.
The Temps, The Four Tops, Smokey Robinson, The Supremes, Mary Wells, Doris Troy, Barbara George, The Funk Bros. THE MOTOWN SOUND. What a great time in the 60s.
The Temptations and The Supremes ruled. Back then you could see them almost weekly on tv. Most people watched them back when we had a shared culture. Now we are fragmented
My dad & uncle saw the Temps in Philadelphia back in the 60s; I found that out when David died in Philly back in the early 1990s. David Ruffin could sang!!! For real. Nice review as always, guys. Take care 🙂
I love the Temptations this song was used in a repeating refrain throughout the movie "Four Brothers" starring Mark Wahlberg as Bobby Mercer, Tyrese Gibson as angel Mercer, ex-Marine and hustler Andre Benjamin as Jeremiah Mercer and Garrett Hedlund as Jack the youngest Mercer. Super good movie if you haven't seen it I would recommend it. But I would also like to suggest another group to give a listen, if interested. "Ain't Going To Hurt Nobody - Brick" --Brick was formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 1972 by Regi Hargis from two members of two bands, one disco and the other jazz. And They coined their own term for the music and called it disco-jazz. There most popular single was "Dazz" I really enjoyed this one fella it sure brought back some fond memories thanks so much for sharing. You pops has great taste in music 🎶 🎶
Many a night, hangin with buddies, drinking beer, car doors open, 8 track playin the Temptations, talking about our plans for life etc…just teens, we had so much to learn! Some guys did good stuff, some fizzled, some died….the Temptations are in the soundtrack of my life! Thanks for the memories!
IF I am correct guys I think this was on the old "Hollywood Palace" television program back in around 1968. Not 100% on the year but I am really close. I grew up in Detroit in the 60s. I am OLLLD but have been very very blessed to be there during these times.
"Poppa Wa A Rolling Stone" and "Just My Imagination" are my two favorite Temptation songs. All to real for so many people. I mean, how many 14 year old boys have looked out the window at their favorite "crush" walking home from school and dream about a future that will never come true.
One OF THE BEST GROUPS AROUND. Check out "Can't get next to you', "Ain't too proud to beg", "My Girl" and "I'm Gonna make you love me." They earned 4 Grammy awards.
Used to hang around the Motown studio on Woodward Ave. Everyone hung out. Motown is for Everyone. Just like Country music. Smokey Robinson, Bob Seger Detroit Grit 🇺🇸🏁
Hard to top that. Thanks for your cool reaction to one of the coolest guys and the coolest groups from the heyday of Motown, Great song, amazing performance by David and the group.
I'm a 54 yr old white dude born in December '68. I really feel like I grew up in the "sweet spot" of music. Not too far removed from Motown and the 60's Rock groups. My Mom ALWAYS had the radio on and tuned to either "Top 40” or "Oldies" station. My Dad was a huge Elvis fan. My Italian Grandma played Frank and Dean and my Great Aunt's would sing Italian and Big Band era songs at family reunions. The 70's had a big 50's nostalgia due to "American Graffiti" and "Grease." Which spawned "Happy Days" and "The Stray Cats." My buddies and myself would buy 50's music cassettes at the same time we bought KISS, LYNYRD SKYNYRD and EDDIE MONEY, etc. albums. Man we were lucky and spoiled. Ha! I'd give anything to go back to 5th grade. That's when I peaked. Ha!
This is an example of Black Musicians and Performers that influenced so many young British Men in the UK and led to the British Invasion. This cross Atlantic exposure of Black Americans performing in Europe had been going on continuously since the end of WW One My Dad was from Scotland and he played all kinds of Records of the music that he grew up listening to through the 1930's and 1940's. I remember listening to this music between the ages of 4 to 10 years old.{ 1964- 70 } My favorite recordings were by the Mills Brothers. Four real brothers who were Black and sang in such Beautiful Harmony, it was Magical to me as a young boy. I haven't looked, but there must be some Mills Brothers on RU-vid. Probably the most viewed video would be just fine to react to. The Mills Brothers are like the OG's of Black Vocal Harmony Mastery, that would have such a profound influence on music in the future. 🎶"Listen to the Music"🎶 Peace from 🇨🇦 🕊
I relate to listening to my parents' music, including The Mills Bros. I made a Playlist of my dad's favorites! Always feel him with me when I'm listening to those Old songs. Enjoyed your memories ✨️ My dad never sang, but he could whistle just like a voice singing. Wish I had made a tape of him doing that. Miss it and (you) Dad ❤
Growing up just east of Detroit, in Canada, Mowtown was KING in the late 60’s! Black, white, American or Canadian! This is the soundtrack of my youth! Peace
This was The Temptation's great studio album, released in 1968 via Gordy Records. It was the final release from the group's "Classic-5". The Temptation and Four Tops are essential music to this very day. Gotta listen to this original soul. It's sooooooo good. The term "They Don't Make Music Like That Anymore" was invented because of talent like this.
After they harmonize with the *_Ooh hoos_* they almost all were motionless. Paul isn't moving and facing straight ahead as is Blue who's looking to (our) right. Eddie is looking to the right and downward with his right leg moving. Otis is looking up and motionless. When David sings "my girl has found another" Blue and Paul starts swaying on "and gone away." Though we can't see them I believe they all begin moving and breaks into the background when Ruff sings "I know to you..." Temptations 4 Ever! Peace🤩
Thanks for keeping our heros and heroines from the past on the screens who made it possible for all of those who successfully followed. It was actually that specific generation who knocked it out the park in the music industry and opened doors that would have NEVER opened for today's African-American generation of talent were it not for them.
I love this song I originally heard it done by Little Caesar the band and have cost just like anything you hear a song and then you'll start learning who did the originals and then you start learning and listening to the originals
Eight track tape players in the hallways at school at lunch doing the temptation walk in lines down the hall. So much fun. I feel so fortunate to have grown up back in the day.
I'm not sure if there's a live version but I love their version of Silent Night. Their vocals just peirce through me every time. I play theirs and Elvis' song each year throughout the season. Oh yeah...lift you right up and remind you the reason for the season. The birth of the King of kings. I call em JC, but we're pretty tight so He don't mind.. ✌🏼❤ gentlemen
Love the family vibe and just think that you are really really good at this reaction game: you bring a lot to it, but still willing to listen and learn...and all from the heart. Thank you for this gift. Much love.
It is amazing the wealth of talent in rock, pop, soul and country music back in the 60's and Motown turned out one hit after another. I was a teenager in the 60's and the Temps were probably my favorite Motown band, but just like in the other genre's of music there were many great bands to choose from at that time!
Thank you for this! Yes, this is the 'Classic' line-up that most people prefer. Everyone at their peak. David Ruffin should be way more famous. Eddie Kendricks should be too. He also had a great solo career. Paul Williams did all the choreography. He was also a great singer who sang lead before David was in the group. I am not a fan of Otis Williams for a variety of reasons. He got stage fright before these performances. Not much of a dancer or singer. He probably just didn't want to screw up and make the guys mad at him. LOL Try reacting to these songs: You'll Lose a Precious Love, Since I Lost My Baby, I Know I'm Losing You.
Boys when it comes to R&B, NOBODY I mean NOBODY today can compare with the R&B brothers I’d the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Completely different R&B of today!
Motown was such a factory, not in a bad way, but they covered everything from song, arrangement, footwork, great backing musicians, great recording studio presence, engineering, producing and marketing finesse. I also loved Stax which was great musicians in a more laid back atmosphere, like Otis Redding, Aretha, Booker T. & the MGs, etc. Both models produced music I grew up with (70 years old).
Thank you. You have reacted to two of my all time favorites. I wish would rain and You can't always get what you want. The strings in this song is fire 🔥. Thanks fellas great reaction as always. It is much appreciated 🙏 ❤
I have never seen this!!! This is SO FREAKING COOL!!!!’ Please Mr. Wizard I wanna go back to the 60’s! But like my good buddy Eddie Money once said “I wanna go back and do it all over again, but I can’t go back I know, I wanna go back cause I’m feeling much older but I can’t go back I knowwwwwwwwwwww!”
I love David Ruffin, but Dennis Edwards is a part of so many more classic Tempts' hits and an unmistakable voice in their history. He's on their first two Grammy winners ("Cloud Nine" and "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone") and it's his voice that's front and center on one of the finest -- if not THE finest -- Temptations albums, A Song for You.
Just real voices. No autotune, no reverb, pure talent. The sad back story to this song is the guy who wrote it and found his wife cheating. He couldn't take the pain. He sadly took his own life.
