Yup. Something this video fails to discuss is... well I think it was kinda obvious in the furniture section. They were able to ship fucking timber all the way across the pacific, unload it, ship it to a factory, manufacture furniture, ship it back to port, sail it all the way back 6000 miles, and still destroy the US market. That doesn't absolve Temu of all it's other issues, but it does show that the US has it's own issues. Issues pooling up all the worlds value into one location, both in terms of the country and in terms of the elites. This is just what happens when you pay your workers like shit. We might be dirt poor in terms of our own country(I know I am) and can barely afford to live, but we're incredibly wealthy by comparison to most everywhere else. The grift is up. That being said, Temus obfuscation of prices and sizes and reviews mean that actually a large majority of products on the platform are the same price as lets say Walmart for example. I've made purchases and I've done the math. People aren't saving nearly as much as they think they are usually.

The fact that other problematic stores sell their products doesn't make you any less of a part of the problem for buying them

This concept is about lack of wisdom or foresight on the consumer's part, but it doesn't adequately explain in full Temu. It's true with things like works shoes or cars and such. Things that you will need for the rest of your life. But with fast fashion and useless junk like what's popular on Shein and Temu, being new is a desirable trait for the consumer. Clothes fashionable for a month, a gadget you use once to see how it works, a second time because you feel bad for spending money on it and then never again, and so on. In many cases it's about the novelty, not about being a cheap alternative (but I can see that as the motivation in many cases too).

I've never trusted the western media narrative of concentration camps in China. We're talking about the same media that has never reported on Israel running an open air prison of Muslims with guard towers since 1967. And we also know the corporate media have to bend over backwards to lick Chinas ass so until I see citizen journalism on this I have to guess the motive to media reporting on concentration camps is to discredit China in preparation for the War the US have planned using Taiwan.

Ignoring that "shrinkflation" is just inflation but just not on the price tag. Cost has always been a thing, it's not even the whole "chinese will steal shit", it's just labour cost is so low it's the only real way to get the costs of production so low people are willing to pay for it. The harsh reality is that the average consumer has become accustomed to dirt and dirt cheap since the 60's and don't want to step away from it. Even mid and a large number of high end items are dirt as compared to the cost it would be to produce locally and ethically. As a design and publishing business myself (of kids toys) I would LOVE and praise heaven if I could make my products locally but I'd need to multiply my prices at minimum 10 fold to even have a chance at making a profit, more than 20 times if I want to avoid running the edge. And realistically speaking, who would be buying a set of 36 colored wooden blocks for 170 euro rather than 10 euro? Wages are simply to high as the cost of wages are just put in the cost of the product same with taxes and other costs, and that most manufacturing has moved to China and other such places closing local plants that worked at scale (increasing cost again). I think a wake up call to people should be that generally speaking buying new is cheaper than repairing a broken item. In a healthy manufacturing ecosystem repair should be significantly cheaper than buying new.

@@relo999 for most objects, but not all. In my industry, a skilled craftsman is paid somewhere between $17-$25/hr. Shop rates are USUALLY about 100-150/hr for most yards. I charge about $75/hr for repairs and custom fab work, myself. It really depends on what it would cost to pay someone to do said work. But I'd agree its screwed up to arbitrarily make that more difficult, a la apple.

Coming from Amazon fulfillment centers, where Amazon is taking a cut essentially, warehouse workers are paid, ect. and the person selling the product makes a profit. There is always the used market. I got an old TV for free many years ago it is over 20 years old I mostly just watch DVDs but it works great still and honestly a TV or cell phone is unnecessary anyway. You can find computers and TVs for cheap used or even find them on the side of the road, so no need to buy new inferior products. But I do agree it is hard to find things not made in china, but it is not impossible.

If you refuse to buy from Temu, but have no issue using Nestlé and all its child companies, or Apple, Nike, Adidas, Samsung etc. you’re not serious about anything, you’re just paying for a layer of abstraction from a large western company to justify your actions as if paying more for slavery means anything. There is a huge leap you have to make to be switching from amazon where all marketing information is traceable and has a proper paper trail linked to it rather than using an application that blatantly hides its sourcing information from you and is veiled in intentional deception. Normally you would have a point, if Temu wasn't your target for defense. It is exactly the same leap you have to make to switch from RU-vid to TikTok. I just can't make that decision in good conscience. If you use TikTok, you deserve every negative thing that happens to you, because they aren't hiding what they are doing to you. Same with Temu. In a sense, in any marketplace, the price for the products tells you the story of how it arrived there. I didn't need to see these informative videos to understand there's something extremely shady going on. It's extremely odd for you to be running such hard defense for a company that does not care at all about the consumer or the seller.

Somehow I don't think throwing even more fistfuls of cash at those companies (through Temu/Shein/Aliexpress) is going to solve anything, but it will absolutely make things much worse, now and in the long term.

Phone upgrades, planned obsolescence, removing support for older systems, and the lack of modernized industry standardization making for less repairable products all spit in the faces of these miners. We need stronger regulations and deeper consequences for being involved in these human rights violations. Until that happens, the best thing you can do is see through the consumerist marketing propaganda and repair what you can, buy used if it's an option, or spend a premium on a quality ethically-sourced item that will last longer and give you a better experience. Only as a last resort should you buy some cheap garbage made at the expense of others, otherwise you are directly endorsing genocide, slavery, forced labor, and environmental destruction.

Most of those companies will still be underpaying workers, but don't try to paint it the same as genocide, slavery, and forced labor. Next time you go to buy from Temu, ask yourself if you really need that, or if you can buy it used. Otherwise, search for a company that will produce what you need ethically with quality materials at a premium. They're out there, and the only reason the premium is so high is because there's no economy of scale since your perspective proliferates among consumerists, detaching them from the moral consequences of spending their money frivolously.

Exactly, this has always been the case. Idk about Shein, but many popular clothing brands has been exploiting the Bangladesh garment industry since forever ago. If you look into it, you'll realize not only are the workers underpaid but sometimes foreign brands straight up not pay at all and run off with the goods. And not to mention child labor is rampant.

Apathy definitely wins out. It is impossible to care about all the issues going on in the world and function in everyday society. Almost every action has some negative that comes with it. It seems like videos like these are just made for engagement purposes, not to inform (because the parts about items being overly cheap and the app being gamified aren't exactly true--these are just commonly spread sentiments about Temu). Yet, people will pat themselves on the back for not using Temu while they participate in some other activity that also is "morally wrong." The world is doomed. And things have to get way worse before there's any chance of things changing.

As a side note I would like to mention that I reside in the United states. Many believe this country is currently in a race to have one of the largest sex slave operations available. Keeping in mind that they have only recently stopped mass-producing fentanyl and have been called out by multiple us senators for funding different Chinese projects like covid.
