I quick follow up video, The 21 foot $10.00 Dollar antenna tower is finished. The weather here has stayed warm enough to continue working on outdoor projects and I am super happy with the results. This little project was long overdue as I certainly love to listen to the radio here in the house on days that it is to cold to be working in the shop.
My total costs were under $10.00 not including the antennas and the wiring.

Maybe you're right, guess it's a mindset. CBs and other old school communications are what is still working- Cell reception was not an option for most of us- The emergency responders were going back to old radios since they were the only things still working

Another way is to ask the local power or telephone companies for used poles. You may even get one for free depending on their company policies. They’ll out last many of us and they could be happy to unload them. No concrete needed just auger the hole, drop it in and tamp around the base.

Keep a close watch on the wood at the base where it enters the concrete. A pressure treated post set in concrete is a very common thing to see, but people do not realize they will still rot. I’ve seen it a lot. The wood eventually shrinks some and then there is a gap where the concrete once used to contact it. Water seeps in at the gap and starts the process. Also the freeze and thaw cycles can crack the concrete away from the wood even further, opening the gap and creating others as well. A good sealant that works in wet or dry conditions is Lexel caulking. Great stuff! Sticks to any surface, wet or dry, but getting adhesion on wet surfaces does take just a little bit if work. Once applied it is permanent. Fill any gaps at the base with Lexel and the post will last a lot longer.

Nice setup, for the budget savvy learn to make your own long wires, you can cut them for any band or make a linked dipole using powerpole connections to make it all in one. Get a 600’ spool of 14 gauge wire and go crazy. Remember 234/frequency equals the total length in feet of a 1/4 wave, split that in half to get the length of your elements.

With the size of your property. You should build the Antennas of Antennas. The mighty "Rhombic" antenna, four posts in a diamond configuration with the feed point a half a wavelength to the frequency on the 11m band above ground, the Rhombic will measure around 22f each side, so that would be around 88f total, a full wavelength per side. Four egg ceramic insulators, and some 550 parachord, and you would be on top of the word. The "Rhombic" is one antenna any Ham would give their left arm to do, simply because the antenna requires alot of land most people dont have.

Hey no worries about the age or the price of your antenna as long as it works, I just got my base setup for winter and I didn’t have an antenna or coax so I looked on my local Craigslist and found a Shakespeare Big Stick from 1972 with a roll of 75ft of some Belden 213 Low Loss coax and got it all for $50 bucks and if you’ve seen the prices on new antennas and/or coax prices it outrageous currently that low loss coax is almost $4.00 per foot without ends so I think I got a steal
@theupstaters
@theupstaters 3 года назад
Great video Eric, just wanted to touch on the MFJ 1778, it's a G5RV the reason you're having better reception on the antron is because that ladder line needs to be clear on everything, and should not be touching itself. It is a resonant part of the antenna. Lastly the G5RV is really only designed for 20m, I had the same antenna with poor performance, you should try to get the legs at a 45 degree angle slope or flat (horizontal) from the ground.
@FarpointFarms
@FarpointFarms 3 года назад
Thanks for the info! Now I am bummed. I have no way to get it up that high, and no way to get the full 30+ feet of that line clear and free. DANG!
@NC0Q
@NC0Q Год назад
I had a ZS6BKW (similar to G5RV) antenna for quite some time, which also had a length of 450 ohm window-line that exceeded my available altitude, which I believe was about 20 feet. I gently twisted the window line, until it looked kind of like a long stretched slinky, and “shortened” it enough to get the coax connector off the ground. I might have had a length of Dacron rope threaded through the helix/slinky/ from feedpoint to a stake on the ground. Anyway, it worked. Food for thought.

@jpope8589
@jpope8589 6 месяцев назад
That looks like a G5RV antenna, not a long wire. Technically, a long wire is at least one full wave long at the operating frequency and fed at the end rather than the middle of the wire.

Um ... For many folks, lightning isn't much of an issue ... until it happens to YOU ! Despite all my efforts and expenses, I have lost 3 radios and countless antennas from lightning and unseen ground currents. I live in central NC on a tobacco farm, and we have lightning here ! I think the location might be the key because we have lots of subterranean water-filled caverns under us and USGS tells me that is a real potential for lightning generation. I don't know about the Sand Hills but we have it in abundance . Be careful, don't think this won't and can't happen ... it does !

The long wire picks up more noise as well, no surprise there. You need a tuner just like transmit. Its works both ways.

@forgetyourlife
@forgetyourlife 3 года назад
@@FarpointFarms the radio wants to hear 50ohms. A long wire isn’t fully resonate all the way from end to end etc. BIG signals will make it but little stations won’t unless you either trim the antenna or add wire or adjust the impedance with a tuner. Remember those telescoping rabbit ears on the back of your childhood TV? They were adjustable for frequencies not just collapsible for easy transport. The bowtie for UHF was smaller bc uhf freqs are smaller etc. 73

So Im in Colorado sitting at 9,000 ft alt and I just pulled out my old cb and got myself an Antron99 sitting at about 38' tall. Morning till about noon-1pm'ish I get crazy skip most days and I dont have anyone to compare but I feel like Im reaching HAM ranges on receive but so far no one hears me ( my radio could be damaged transmitter ). In Colorado I hear everywhere in the US to a point I find to be nutty. Im hearing Florida all the way up the east coast to Maine once. I hear mostly east coast, somewhat central heartland states, gulf coast states, and then from there I hear lots of California and up the west coast. I DO NOT hear much north of me I assume cause of the mountains. As I said no one hears me yet and I need to get a new radio but what I hear is insane. Also at around 1pm the noise floor is so high I dont hear much for the rest of the night. I find it odd I dont hear much of anything late nights even on clear winter nights. I am seeking a new radio that has SSB and hopefully solid transmit. I dont want to amplify but I want all the best equipment for a STRONG transmit. Any idea's?

RG8 is old military standard. RG8X its what your thinking of and what was used in the video. RG213 (or LMR-400) is better by a mile if you can afford it though especially at vhf/Uhf freqs. RG8X is fine for 10Mhz and below though. Stay away from rg58 except in very short runs.

I will bet you if you made that antenna yourself, it wouldn't have cost 1/4 of what you spent on the "bought off the shelf" antenna already made up! Wire antennas are so simple, and so cheap if you make them yourself! Even verticle antennas that aren't yagis are cheap to make out of thin conduit, you would be better off doing it yourself. You would learn antenna theory by constructing antennas from a book, than waiting for one to be shipped to you! Try it sometime, you will be hooked. AND you will never be looking at a website for antennas ever again. Older Hams from the 60's-70's had to make their own cause only the very few could afford the prices back then. THEY "worked the world" on homemade antennas, are you willing to admit you can't?
