I finally watch THE TERMINATOR (1984) for the FIRST TIME! 🔥
------------------------------------
Movie Summary:
Disguised as a human, a cyborg assassin known as a Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) travels from 2029 to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton). Sent to protect Sarah is Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn), who divulges the coming of Skynet, an artificial intelligence system that will spark a nuclear holocaust. Sarah is targeted because Skynet knows that her unborn son will lead the fight against them. With the virtually unstoppable Terminator in hot pursuit, she and Kyle attempt to escape.

My favorite bit is when he's in the apartment as the landlord asks about the odor coming from the room. The Terminator cycles through possible responses and comes up with "Fuck you, asshole", which is a nod to the scene where the T-800 (the exact model of The Terminator, also referred to in the movie by Reese as Cyberdyne Systems model 101) first arrived and encountered/slaughtered that gang of thugs led by Bill Paxton.
@Can_O_Crayola

"Is the Terminator a villain?" The Terminator is a MONSTER. And a monster can be the most terrifying of *antagonists*... but is NEVER the villain.... The Terminator is an "evil robot." And the thing about "evil" robots, they're not really evil, they're *coldly logical,* and have decided that WE're the evil... and they're USUALLY RIGHT (Or at least have a good point) Or sometimes they DO have emotions but are then are horrifically abused and exploited by humanity and *righteously* rise up agaisnt their oppressors Monsters aren't villains, they're a *circumstance.* Monster stories are essentially man vs nature stories but nature is given a character and a personality. A monster story unfolds much like an animal attack story or a disaster movie. How the *humans* react to it determines who the heroes and villains are. The shark in Jaws is not a *bad person,* it's a *good shark.* The *Mayor* is the villian. The Xenomorphs in aliens aren't bad people, they're good xenomorphs. The *company* is the villain. The Terminator is not a bad guy, he's a good Terminator. The villian is the military industrial complex and humanity's need for war and our blindness to the danger of it all. The politicians and engineers are all inferred off-screen, but then the police and Dr Silberman are lo-key villians in that they refuse to believe the truth and see the danger. Consider, that like Reece, The Terminator is on a one-way suicide mission to save his race from extinction. To *other robots,* he's the *hero.* *BUT...* Monsters (and robots and animals) CAN be legit *protagonist* heroes. They're not human so when they're "bad" they're not violating the social contract. But for a monster to *willfully* choose to fight for humanity, makes them even *more heroic* than good-guy humans.(And sometimes, the humans ARE the villains and our sympathies are *entirely* with their non-human adversaries) You can have a story take place *within* a non-human society, then you can have heroes and villains relative to *their* morality. In the new Planet of The Apes movies, much of the drama takes place in the ape society, and so there are good and bad apes relative to the ape social contract, giving us both heroic and villainous apes. But then they're essentially "people" just of another species, like one of the intelligent alien races in Star Wars or Star Trek.

Very rare to find a car with an alarm turned on in the 80's unless they were brand new. The original budget fir the movie was only 4 million. Later they raised the budget to a little over 6 million. That's why some things are a little iffy..like some of the graphics..and getting permits fir car chases. 😂 Only stunt I can find that it says Arnold didn't do in this one is jumping on the hood of the car. It's the only one I could find where it's specified that a stunt double did it. Watched all the Terminator movies. As far as I'm concerned only 1 & 2 exist now. Same with Predator and Alien franchises.

The third movie, the one you previously saw, IS about John. The actors who have played John have all been different. That movie is just okay. This one is better, and the second one is fantastic. Did want to give you credit for being one of the only people reacting to this movie who realized that the events happening to the young Sarah Connor are already starting to shape her into the tough woman who will educate John about fighting the war and beating the terminators. She dresses Kyle's gunshot wound, learns from him how to make bombs, is forced into defensive driving, orders the collapsed Kyle to get back on his feet, refuses to run when he tells her to, unstakes her own leg, and crushes the terminator. The Sarah at the end is armed and has a dog to detect future terminators. Few people seeing this for the first time figure out that Sarah is being changed through these events to eventually become the legend Kyle described. Good for you for picking up on that!

I absolutely love the 1st movie and the 2nd as well. and I have watched all of them, cause it's an amazing franchise!! Fun fact: Terminator was created due to James Cameron having a dream about a chrome skeleton crawling from a fire, when he was sick in Rome back in 1981. and the film was inspired by the futility of fallout shelters when it comes to nuclear bombs. he was the Co-writer and Director of the movie.

This was a very low budget film at the time. Many scenes were shot by Cam'ron without permits. So they would do one or two takes and get out of the location. At the time Arnold had only Pumping iron and Conan The Barbarian to his credit. Every actor was either unknown of a character actor. BTW there was no CGI at the time the filmed was made. Every stunt was preformed by Stuntmen. Every Special effect was practical, miniature, or stop action. It was this film that put Camrose and Arnold on the map.

Old man here. I got to watch this and Return of the Jedi in theatres back in 83. Amateur Filmmaker, 2D & StopMo animator. With the exception of 1982's TRON film, everything was practical. No computer generated imagery (CGI) until the late 80s & early 90s films like T2, The Abyss, and Jurrasic Park. Everything was either fully built sets, great makeup, animatronics, miniatures, stop motion animation, and forced perspectives. Real movie magic. T1 put James Cameron on the map. His prior film to this was Piranna 2. He had a 6+ million dollar budget, and made 78mil in the boxoffice. Master class film making.

Many people consider T2 one of the greatest sequels ever. I love the Special Edition (not Final Edition, because of the ending that was rejected by test audiences), as it has more world building, more humor, more cool FX scenes and more character development, but also, a longer runner time. For a more streamlined action movie experience, the regular version (theatrical release) is fine too. Theatrical version made a few changes to the plot to accommodate the shorter running time.

Great reaction. Don't think it can happen? It's happening. Take a closer look at the dialogue that Reece is having with Sarah... about how the computers just got "smart" (smart phones, smart tv, smart watches, Grammarly etc. ...hooked into everything. Look at AI and how it may not look like the Terminator as Arnold portrays, but look at the damage AI is doing to some people as a humanity. Yes, AI may be helpful, as you will see in the next movie, but it can very well be what's metaphorically happening in many ways today. Look at entertainment and how much better movies in particular were back then. The playback quality can not be denied. There was a balance that brought so many wonderful layers to the art of movie making in endless categories.

My favorite is a tie between 1 and 2. 2 is a better movie, but 1 sets the story and blew my mind (first saw it as a rental in 1986 for my 12th birthday party). The first 2 was al James cameron (writing/directing). 2 is awesome because of the CGI was able to do much that the practicle effects could not. 1 was great for its time, but as you noted, not always the best. In my opinion, all the moviews have value, but definately watch through 4 (Salvation) where Christian Bale does play John Conner. The first 4 do really largely make sense. After that they start messing with the timeline which makes them lesser in my opinion. There is also the tv show if you want, which is ok. (Sarah Conner show). 3 will make way more sense after you watch 2. Many of the things are a direct call out to the second movie.

Actually no. After the movie was released, scifi writer Harlan Ellison sued Cameron for copyright infringement-- major plot elements were apparently lifted from an episode of The Outer Limits that was adapted from one of his short stories. Cameron swears he wasn't aware of nicking ideas when he wrote the script. The compromise was the addition to the closing credits, ACKNOWLEDGEMENT TO THE WORKS OF HARLAN ELLISON.

I think the movie you saw was Terminator 4 (FOUR) ... not 3. For reference: Terminator 1: Sarah Connor's story, learns about the war, mother to John Terminator 2: John as a teenager, hates mom, tries to prevent the war, hates his legacy. Terminator 3: John as an adult, realizes his legacy, tries to fight it, front row seat to the start of the war, and the most lethal terminator yet. Terminator 4: Tiny bit of John's timeline, but mostly about his dad and trying to determine how to prevent the original terminator from being created, fights from an older perspective. There's also a TV show in here somewhere ... and I believe a FIFTH movie, though I've never seen it. I think I've seen 4 before ... maybe bits and pieces ... but 1-3 are the iconic movies that set the pace for ALL other sci-fi horror films for decades to come. I saw bits and pieces of Terminator 1 while shuffling through channels on a cable box, with the manual channel changing dial (no remotes, and definitely no cell phones!) that went in circles with massive clickity-clacking goodness (if you passed the channel you were aiming for, you had to keep turning the dial until it came back around to the number ... one click at a time ... manually). BUT ... I saw this as an 8 year old Deaf kid ... and only the clip where the Terminator removes his eyeball and arm parts in the dank hotel room. Had no idea what I was watching, no captions back then (and for MANY years after), and at 8 years old all I knew was I wanted to know MORE about this because it was absolutely terrifying and fascinating. I had already "accidentally" watched parts of Poltergeist (the original BADARSE film that got me hooked on horror) a year before, and this was right up my alley!

Part 1 is great, part 2 is legendary. The fact that you only saw part 3 is funny, even though I'm in the minority and would say that part 3 is good. It just falls off a cliff after that.

The guy on the right that you thought was in the Mask, isn’t. He does look a lot like the main villain tho. He WAS however, Shao Kahn in Mortal Kombat Annihilation

Turns out the only way for Skynet to win the war is to go back in time and stop itself from inventing time travel so that Kyle Reese can't go back in time and father John Connor.
