Because she knows that Stephen would prefer a British accent, and she's right. But when new language accents are available, he realized that the original American accent has became his trademark so he kept using the american accent. There is an interview about this somewhere in youtube. I think it's alongside his answer about the future of AI tech

Its just that the voice didnt match stephens and so his wife wanted it to feel more appropriate for him. It is his new voice after all.

What’s funny is that in the future that voice was discontinued for syntax and Hawkings device was the only one that still utilized it. It literally became his voice. RIP

I've heard that they offered Hawking a better voice synthesizer at some point but he refused because everyone recognizes that voice and like you said, it became his voice.

It doesn't matter how the voice sounds as long as it allows Stephen to communicate easier. This program was developed by a man whose mother-in-law was suffering from the same disease that Stephen had. Other voices eventually became available but Stephen choose to stick with the one he'd been using because he preferred it and identified with it. That voice is no longer produced, however. This scene takes place in 1986, so Stephen is definitely entering the future.

Here's a bonus fact: the computer voice you hear in the trailer (and maybe the movie itself, I haven't watched it yet) was actually done by Stephen Hawking himself! He literally "speaks" in the trailer.

the computerized voice is Dennis H. Klatt's. He lost his voice but he gifted it to Stephen. Despite technology improving to the point where we could have given him his original voice back, Stephen refused every single "upgrade". "Thank you, but no, this is the voice of my dear friend Dennis and his voice is my voice."

Goddamn, every few years a figure stand out, a figure who gets the respect and acknowledge they deserve without tribulation, in this case a man who endured years of struggling both physically and expressing verbally, nonetheless he found a way. He expressed hope and provided theory to many, who may agree or disagree but was never dismissive to others. We lost a true Paradigm on this day, I hope I may be lucky to meet or know another in my life-time, rest in peace Mr.Hawking.
