I know it is sad that they divorced but if you fall out of love with someone it's ok to leave, it's not fair to live a lie. She still cares about him, but she also needed to be honest, it is hard to be in such a situation and it is important to understand the quality of life she had to. Movies need to be more cleché and interesting to an audience so they were unable to express her struggles within the film.

@@braceleerohith That shows how little you know about her! She was emotionally and physically exhausted. She gave her 25 years for the marriage but it just took a toll on her . She was depressed and unhappy. Even suicidal. It's easy for you to judge her but it's difficult to be in her shoes . Imagine having to look after your wheelchair bound husband ,spoon feed him ,bath him , dress him while also looking after two tiny kids! His work / physics took him away emotionally. The truth is , Stephan never really cared about the family he was more focused on his work . She never even left him or never wanted to end the marriage . If was Stephan who moved out with Eliane and left his family . Matter of fact , Stephan had feelings for the nurse . Perhaps she convinced him to despise Jane . She was even thrown out of her family home . It's sad I know but Jane and Jonathan are two broken people who found shelter in each other. Jane loved Stephan till the end even during the ups and downs she writes that she was still in love with him and couldn't ignore his needs . It was just that she had her needs too and she wanted care , love , support back . Stephan always wanted to be the centre of attention and it was hard for Jane to always give while she gets nothing in return . Marriage is a give and take relationship. It would just suck out all the energy of one person if he/she keeps giving without getting anything . One would want her to stick with him the rest of her life even tho she's unhappy and exhausted without having anyone to take care of HER but that's just not possible. Both parties were incapable of fulfilling each other's needs but they tried their best against all odds! And that's the beauty of it . Jane wanted to be with Stephan not because she was getting paid or anything but she did it out of love. So she can be with him through the time he has in his hands. Imagine seeing your loved one be at the mouth of death every single day. I do not blame Jane , she did more than she could bear and I respect her for that. One thing I know is that Stephan grew remote and distant and it was best for them to seperate. Jane deserved a normal and a happy life. I am happy their love existed at some point and probably still does somewhere .❤️

Very late, but it was a somewhat mutual split, if not divorce. Their relationship became strained due to a variety of factors, including religious differences, their life being intruded on by nurses and caregivers, and Jane feeling overwhelmed by having to take care of Stephen and their three children. Not to mention that one of Jane’s friends, Jonathan, who ended becoming help to the Hawking family and one of Stephen’s caregivers, had romantic interest in Jane, and she returned them for him. Although they remained platonic for the rest of Stephen and Jane’s marriage to not further strain their family, Stephen was aware of their feelings and though it wasn’t really cheating, I’m sure it felt kind of like it from his perspective. Overall, when Stephen began having feelings for one of his nurses, it was sort of the straw that broke the camels back, and although it is unclear whether his relation with his nurse (Elaine) was healthy as they later divorced, Jane and Stephen seemed to be better as just close friends, as that way Jane could marry Jonathan, and Stephen could remain close to Jane and his children without the pressure of maintaining a relationship without any real romantic love left in it.

Stress on the relationship due to Stephen's illness. She was an absolute saint for being his rock all of those years but naturally with those circumstances you're bound to grow apart. Can't blame her for wanting a normal relationship. They'd just grown apart. It was a mutual decision to separate.
