I came to translation without a formal qualification (although with a background in philology), and I've been reading about translation theory to be more well-rounded as a translator. Definitely recommended! Grüess usem Wälschland 🙋🏻‍♂️

Translation theory was a very low priority in my training; I have been working as a translator for 30+ years now, and having seen this video, I must say: I am happy that it was not higher up on the list. :) At least in this field, practical training beats academic knowledge. In my humble opinion, of course. Thanks for the concise overview!

Absolutely agree! I was offered a PhD position once in that field, but I had to decline for exactly that reason, I didn't see the point of pursuing academia in that field. Glad you enjoyed the overview :)

I'm coming up on 30 in J->E. My school didn't even *have* a translation program back then. Give me practical experience any day.

It is nice to know that! I love the idea to put emphasis on the culture. I have found that I speak fluently with my sister's husband who is American. But, when I inmerse to his southern culture, they have many sayings, proverbs, and cultural nuances that I get lost many times 😂. That makes me respect both his culture and the English language.

That's lovely that you have this cultural exchange within the family! Sounds like you are making good use of it :)

Yeah, thank you! I am impressed how many languages swiss people speak. So, you have many stories to tell about cultural nuances and languages too, haha 😂
