I saw this movie when I was younger and tried to compare it to Saving Private Ryan...Now that I'm older I find this movie much more powerful...Shows what war does to the individual. It's a Masterpiece and I think severely underrated
Yeah i watch private ryan now and its like ho hum with the exception of the opening scene at the cemetary, but seeing this movie is like getting hit between the eyes with a sledge hammer.
I couldnt agree more with you. I did the same thing. Its not a an accurate one for one. When I was a teenager I preferred "Ryan" as an adult, "Thin Red Line."
One of the all time Great War films. Arguably the greatest due to its incredible ability to capture the inner heartbreaking monologues of its protagonists.
WHY DID IT END EARLY? THAT WAS A VERY POOR PLACE TO CUT THE SCENE. THE MUSIC WAS BUILDING AND THE BATTLE WAS JUST STARTING AND THE FAMOUS "THIS GREAT EVIL" POEM SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THERE. HOW COME NO ONE RECOGNIZES THE CINEMATIC BRILLIANCE OF THAT PARTICULAR PIECE OF THIS ANTI WAR MOVIE????
The opening of Saving Private Ryan is magnificent but the story after that is so so. This movie is about small unit combat in close quarters with an enemy that gives no quarter. and expects none and the effects it has on individuals. My dad spent 2 years in the Pacific war and had 3 battle stars, the Japanese soldiers were highly respected.
Unlike the Germans who would surrender, the Japanese would fight to the last man, that is why the decision was made to use the atomic bomb, which was a terrible thing bit it probably saved several million lives in the end. This film really captures the emotion of the average American GIs coming up against this reality.
Germans didn't surrender what are you talking about ? Japan surrendered, Germany did not, the russian army had to invade the Reichstag, the last building, there was nothing more to conquest.
@@tojo9979 Americans started doing that because Japanese would "surrender" then pull the pin on a gernade when the Americans got close. And after hearing the way the Japanese treated people they captured im sure the Allies had a hard time wanting to take prisoners.
