We usually charge at hotel. Leave car to charge during night. It’s 100% in the morning. Some hotels even provide free EV charging for guests. Super convenient. No waiting. If you want to use your EV for travel, choose one with big battery and efficient aerodynamics/drivetrain. 22kW AC charging helps too since 22kW chargers are everywhere. When you park by a beach/museum/sports center etc, you find them. Most EVs have only 11kW AC charger. With 22kW charger you get around 30% battery charged during one hour museum stop. Fast DC charging is important for highway stops. But EVs with a big batteries and fast AC and DC chargers are expensive. If you are not willing to spend 50keur+ on an EV, then ICE is still a better car for travel. And indeed, never trust EV range estimates. Get used to your car and you know how much is consumes at highway speeds. This is usually around 30% higher than WLTP (mixed use) consumption. An average 450km WLTP car can drive a bit over 300km on a highway. 600km WLTP car can drive 400km. If your battery is at 50% then you can drive half of that, etc. Simple math.

Just find out all the distances and write down the charger plans a,b,c on a piece of paper as your phone can break or fail to connect to your cloud based lists.

Regarding traffic jams; even when still driving at a lower speed you'll likely see a much lower usage per km, thus a *positive* effect. When I drove from The Netherlands to Germany during the times of the European football cup, I think I drove an average of 50 km/h and over 2h delay with LOTS of stop and go traffic, but that gave me a +20% SoC compared to what one would have expected in normal traffic! The trip was unrelated to the football cup, and I still hate traffic jams, though. 😆

Another tip: ask (in advance) the place where you are planning to stay if you can charge your EV: lots of places don't advertise it, but if asked they are already equipped and experienced to deal with it, because of other customers before. Maybe they give you a cable extension, or let you park in a different sport near a socket, etc.

All good advice for road trips. I like to plan for 20% or more reserve when I arrive at a charger. If it drops to 10% due to weather, etc. that is OK, but I do slow down as required to keep at least 10%. I don't try to get to low SOC before charging, except for meal stops. Since meal stops usually allow my car to get to 100% before I am done, arriving at low SOC gets the maximum amount of charging done. For restroom stops, I stop when I need to and charge for 10-15 minutes while walking to and from the restroom. It is very rare that I need to wait for the car to get sufficient charge, I just do when I am ready.

Agreed! We used ABRP for our long trip in the states, very reliable!

The instructions manual for my ID.3 says it should be charged within 12 hours if going below 30% SOC. So on my two road trips I have made sure so arrive at the destination with over 30% so I wouldn't have to charge immediately. I also found it useful to bring the schuko charging cable, two hotels I've stayed at offered such slow charging for free.

30%? I thought it was 20% in summer and 40% in colder months?
@bjornmu
@bjornmu Месяц назад
@@neilfennell6833 That's not what it says, at least not when I checked the only one. It said you should charge as soon as possible if under 20% and within 12 hours if under 30%. In practice, under 12 hours during vacation would mean shortly after arrival since next morning is too late and I can't do it after having a beer. 😄
@neilfennell6833
@neilfennell6833 Месяц назад
@@bjornmu interesting. I just checked the on-line manual for my ID3 and I can’t find any mention of 30%. Doesn’t mean it’s not there of course! Is your car a new facelift? Have they changed the battery type?
@bjornmu
@bjornmu Месяц назад
@@neilfennell6833 It does say it should have between 30 and 80% if parked for more than 12 hours and at least 40% if parked for "several hours" in frost (I guess that means below 0C). My ID.3 is a 2022 model but I don't know if there are different versions of the online manual.

Hmm choosing charger locations with a lot of charges can also work backwards! Maybe there are a lot of chargers because there are a lot of cars! Some ionitys in France actually have more plugs but are still full with multiple cars waiting on summer vacation travel days.

Be sure you can use the charger - Lidl charger in Germany were not accessible to me from UK even when using Lidl app set to German. It let me see the charger, but I needed a German address to set up account :-(

Hi, I have ID 7 and currently on road trip from Ireland to Czech Republic. Everytime I take a break, navigation stops and I have to re enter destination. Is there a setting to continue with the route till I cancel it myself?

@@cmbhappythanks for advice, however my subscription to “we charge” is incorporated into vw satnav and it is easier to reach the recommended charging station, even searching ‘we charge’ compatible ones manually. Is it normal for route to stop if I take a break. My last BMW continued its journey after stop overs

The first thing you need to know is, Dont take your EV on vacation... EVER ! Just rent a good old Gas car and have fun again

Well, we have over 15000 km on road trips in Europe for the last 3 summers. Best road trips ever though Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Holland, and Sweden... Dont comment if you haven't tried a road trip in an EV.

After buying a Model S 8 years ago, I never took a gas car on a road trip again. I sometimes travel over 600 miles/day, and have less fatigue than I used to with my gas cars.

Yes and no. For example if you plan to go from Helsinki to Lapland for a skiing holiday, it’s best to leave your car at home instead of driving 1000km there and 1000km back. Driving wastes two whole days (morning-evening) and makes you tried. Thus your 7 day vacation becomes a 5 day vacation. If you instead take the morninh flight there, you only waste 3 hours. You are in the slope already before lunch time. Or you take the night train and sleep well. You are there in the morning of your first vacation day. Doing a trip like this with EV is stupid. But it’s also stupid with ICE. Gasoline actually costs the same as plane tickets for two people (train is cheaper). EV is cheaper but the driving days are even longer. So it’s indeed better to take the train/plane to Lapland and rent a car there. For shorter travel with family EV is fine. You don’t want to drive more than 300km daily with kids. And you mostly want to charge overnight at hotels. No waiting. It indeed requires more planning, but it’s also a bit cheaper compared to traveling with an ICE car. We are currently on a road trip in Estonia/Latvia with our EV and it’s been fine. We had to once wait extra 10 mins to charge at Ionity. Otherwise been charging at hotels during night.

forget abrp, ionty has an awesome routeplaner in the app. its still my first choice for trips, because most superchargers dont have restrooms.
