A burn survivor goes on a date.
THE THINGS YOU THINK I'M THINKING is used with permission from Sherren Lee. Learn more at sherrenlee.com.
Sean is a Black male burn survivor on his first date since his accident. He's struggled with emotional barriers and insecurities with his physical image since being badly scarred, and losing both of his arms in a fire. Yet he's put himself out there after many years of recovering, in hopes of making a romantic connection.
His date with Caleb seems promising, and the pair head back to Sean's place. But just when things seem to be progressing, Sean's insecurities flare up and take the evening in an unexpected direction.
Director Sherren Lee and writer Jesse LaVercombe have crafted a warmly empathetic romantic drama about learning to open up to another person in a vulnerable situation and offering compassion to someone just when they need it the most.
The narrative approach and scale is a classic two-hander in many ways, featuring two people and their strong emotions in a confined setting. Crafted with a solid, steady sense of intimacy, it's heavy on excellent dialogue like many two-handers, especially as its two characters negotiate a tricky, delicate situation.
What makes the film highly unique, though, is the main character and actor, and an unusual level of specificity and honesty about his initially defining traits. Actor Prince Amponsah was caught in an apartment fire in 2012, and took years to recover after burns covered over half his body. Amponsah returned to acting four years later, and LaVercombe's script -- which is loosely based on the writer's first encounter with Amponsah -- is a lovely tribute to the process of recovery and how difficult it was to return to some semblance of a full life after such a life-altering accident.
But while the onscreen chemistry between Amponsah and LaVercombe is very connected and open and both actors offer authentic, affecting performances, the film's power isn't in replicating a true-life story in a fictional setting. Instead, with careful, compassionate emotional honesty and understatement, the film extracts a sense of universality from a highly specific character, and when Sean experiences intense vulnerability just as he's on the verge of an intimacy he both fears and desires, the dynamic is highly relatable, both in how it plays out and the tenderhearted way it's resolved.
THE THINGS YOU THINK I'M THINKING offers a full emotional experience about a character we don't often see, but its resonance is in its story and core emotions. At its heart, the narrative is about how we often project the shame and uncertainty we feel about ourselves out into the world, letting these color and shape our interactions and experience, especially in situations like first dates where we are afraid of being judged despite all our best efforts.
Yet sometimes, though, we meet those who are able to be honest -- sometimes painfully so -- and patient in the face of those defenses. In those moments of openness and authenticity, we can grow in empathy and self-awareness -- and offer one another the ordinary yet wonderful miracle of mutual understanding.

Man... To be black, a burn victim, and trying to find love on the gay dating scene... That is a damn respectable man. Seems like a really cool dude and a total bad ass the way he handles his disabilities.

Everyone is talking about the burn victim, and yes, he is brave soul, obviously very tortured in his own mind. Caleb however, is even more unusual to me. The fact he was open minded enough to meet up in the first place and even moreso that he stayed after being yelled at and pushed to the ground on a first date?! As great as it is that he was able to diffuse the situation, it's really no one's responsibility to endure that kind of abuse whether it's coming from a disabled person or not.

I agree with you very much, but I think Caleb forgave him quickly because he sincerely cares about him. I do agree that Sean should have atleast apologized for pushing him on the floor even though I understand why he did it, it was still no excuse to push Caleb.

this is some actual good gay representation. not about them being gay, not brought up at all. as a gay man myself, i think that’s how it should be, it shouldn’t be something special or anything. it shows the struggle of the burn survivor

He managed to get out, but he was 80% burned in the back of his head, in his back a lot, in the back of his arms, in his legs. They went by helicopter to carry out an emergency helicopter winching before he was rushed to a military hospital for burn victims. We were so scared at the time ... he was in a coma for three months before waking up and learning to walk again, to hold a fork etc ... today he is doing very well, I went to him to visit this summer and he is very beautiful even if today his scars will remain for life! He has even had a girlfriend for a very long time, she too got a burn on her face trying to extinguish burning oil by throwing water on it! He was trying to protect himself from the rejection that he was sure would follow if they got too close, I love this guy Celeb for standing his ground and not allowing things to go badly. We all need that ride or die friend/lover who will call us out on our crap or gently push back to allow us to see things more clearly. Beautiful film, I can't imagine how hard it is for the survivor or for people in general who live with alternative appearances that are out of their control.

He was afraid he'd just leave, but what made him sit down and smoke and tell him he didn't know anything about him and this was their first intercation with someone you don't know? You can tell it may go somewhere?

Caleb's patience to getting abused (getting yelled at, getting accused of using Sean to fulfill a fetish, getting pushed onto the floor) on a first date is an art. I understand that Sean has gone through a lot and he's acting out as a defense mechanism for fear of getting rejected but it's still no way to treat your date. Genuinely unsure whether or not to be touched or disturbed. My guess was that Caleb just wanted to try to diffuse the situation and end things on a good note but it's probably best for Caleb to not continue seeing Sean again. Either that or take things slow to really figure each other out before committing any further. My 2 cents.

I honestlty believe when you vibe with somebody's soul nothing else matters. Like once you feel that connection with someone you stop seeing them as attarctive or ugly, you suddenly just see them as themselves. You suddenly start to love every bit of them without realising you're doing it. It's like with these two, it's kinda like something clicked and the guy could see past the guys scars. You're not blind and you see them but you no longer focus on them, all of a sudden it's just like you're seeing the person as a whole rather than just what features they have. Does that make sense?

I think this film encapsulates so many messages rolled into one; victims of trauma learning to recover from a life-changing event, standards of beauty being forsaken in place of the depth beyond appearances, and giving deeper perspective into showing not just disabilities but the very real human beings behind them. This film forced me to self-reflect on what makes me uncomfortable and pulled at my heartstrings after examining a very real struggle that, having never lived through it myself, I had never really considered until now. Beautifully written, acted and directed. Also, I think it was a nice touch that none of the patrons in the bar scene looked at Sean with fear or disgust.

Everything about this is just so real and wholesome. Two people acknowledging their differences, admitting they don't know much about the other, but both still willing and eager to learn more, budding from a tentative friendship to a budding romance. Yes, I am a sucker for these things😭😭

This would do amazing as a show. I mean think about all of the sub-par, overdone Netflix series out there. I thought this, too. I have struggled with disabling health issues myself, but when nobody can see what you're going through there is often so little empathy or patience. Nobody applauding me for getting out of bed. We're all struggling with something, and it's useless to compare who's got it worse. That's why it's important just to be kind.

it's important to recognise representation because we don't get enough of it. not only that but when we do get 'represented', it's a usually unhealthy representation that doesn't do us any good. it's cool to make films/shows where the characters' sexualities aren't explored/discussed in-depth but it's also cool to make films/shows where the characters' sexualities ARE explored/discussed in-depth. in the time that we are living now, we still experience hardships and it helps to recognise it. of course, we shouldn't let the hardships solely define us but outright denying our hardships isn't right.

I loved this short film. It was so raw and heart-wrenching. You can feel the burn survivor's insecurities. So many individuals must have pitied him or used him as some fetish to get off on. He's created this hard exterior to protect himself from harm. I really liked the white guy's ability to deescalate the situation. He was respectful and didn't look down the burn survivor. He held his ground even when the burn survivor got defensive and told him to get out. This is how people should handle conflict. You stand your ground, remaining calm yet firm. It was beautiful.

Wow! Great acting-very natural. I love that this film isn’t focused on the story of what happened to Shawn, but instead shows his life now. What it’s really showing is what we all struggle with, which is assuming that other people must be thinking the terrible thoughts in our own mind. Really well done!❤️
