I am blown away by yet another HUGO award winning novel. This is the pinnacle of modern Science Fiction. This book lends itself to deep discussion, if you have read it please share your thoughts with me. #booktube #bookreview #scifi

I laughed when you talked about the writing style being sterile. Chinese is a very flowery language full or imagery and symbolism. The biggest criticism from the literary circles in China was Liu’s sterile and uninspiring writing style. He’s just all about the ideas and even says himself that he doesn’t care about characters LOL
@pl1842

lol theres a reason why most of great Chinese literature are just appreciated amongst Chinese speaking ppl… duh😂

To me Liu's writing is profound and vivid, the only defect lies in the figure or character he depicts. And this flaw is particularly worsened in the Dark Forest and Death's End, in which some key figures are just like robots , i.e. it's not hard for readers to imagine and remember what this person has done but very hard to form a clear picture of what this person looks like in mind.

I read the series at about the same time as you did, but just discovered your channel today. You've inspired me to re-read the books, which I had planned to do, and follow along. Frankly, I was blown away by the series. I live in China, so reading a Chinese-based sci-fi series has some special resonance with me (an American). I know how to pronounce the names 🙂 As an aside, in China, family name comes first followed by the given name. Family names are almost always one character. So Cixin Liu (as shown on the book cover) is really Liu Cixin, with Liu being a common family name. Pronunciation for an American would be like Leo with emphasis on the 'o' and Tsee-Sheen for the given name.

Wonderful review! I love what you had to say about the different types of sci-fi, and how the Three-Body Problem blends approaches. Sounds like this might have the “in medias res” approach like Malazan, where your dropped into middle of things happening and building towards everything coming together. I sometimes prefer that approach over heavy exposition as long as it’s done skillfully, and it sounds like it really is in this book! Hope you enjoy the rest of the series!

I returned to some sci-fi reading last summer when I read Eye of Cat by Roger Zelazny. I just picked up The Three Body Problem from a bookstore last week and intend to read it later. I'm looking forward to it. I'm currently reading the 195 sci-fi classic, Childhoods' End by Arthur C. Clarke and am enjoying it so far.

Oh nice! 3BP is very much in the cerebral idea focused style of Clarke. Especially in books 2-3. If you are enjoying Childhoods End good chance it will click with you. Although the shift in cultural lens is definitely there.

@@YourBrainonBooks Yes, I did years ago. I read parts of them in different languages. The French and Italian versions are quite smooth and wouldn't have the problems/complains the English versions have. Previously I was focusing on European readers' reaction (there were lots of them excited, eloquent, and intelligent like you) and only this weekend did I start to check out some English reviews. The author's writing style isn't very good in Chinese to begin with, but the English translation is often too word-for-word and therefore could cause some style-related complains, but I hardly saw such complains among Europeans because their translators are generally very competent. I am returning to this book series because a Chinese made TV series is coming up soon (within a few weeks if I am not wrong). It covers only the first book and some very good Chinese actors are involved in the project.

Yeah that makes a lot of sense. I had a friend who read it in Finish and he made mention that the social commentary was so much better than the English translation. English does not lend it self well to that nuance

I'm finishing the 3rd book now. The whole triology is trully epic. With the first book I just had a big beef with the sophons (spoilers below) . . . : . : : : : : : : : : : : Quantum entaglement doesn't work like that. Afecting an entangled particle (like changing the spin or the polarization) doesn't affect the other particle, so the trisolarians could not oversee earth or communicate in real time. Entaglement means that if you entangle 2 particles, when you eventualy measure one of them you know exactly the state of the other one. But affecting one doesn't affect the other, so there's no faster than light communication possible. Another example I think the Cixin Liu made the sophons too OP is the ability of writing in photosensible materials (including human eyes and digital photos). Another thing I felt wasn't well done was the way players behaved in the game. At some point players behaved so unaturally that I thought some of them could be NPCs, but no, every one was a human player. So yeah, the interactions between them were simple not reallistic. No one talked like humans, like "Hey dude! You're new around here. Do you know what's going on already? No? Lemme explain this whole freaking game." That said, I still found it amazing and gave it 4 stars. Looking forward to your review of the second book :) Keep up the good job, Baron!

A big theme of the book that I felt was profound is how naive humans are with our dogmatic relationship with technology. Almost as if we think we are so advanced that we limit progress by allowing it to be our conceptual savior. Imagine how advanced we could be if we removed that human element
