Well, that takes the whole "Don't ever go to bed angry" and dials it up to 15. Don't let yourself die angry, either. And since we never know when we are going to die, I guess that means we'd better work through our conflicts when we can.

This story speaks to me of how hate and anger can affect others long after those originally involved are dead. It's scary how generations after his death, the cruelty and anger of Thorolf affects those who weren't even associated with him. And whose to say the remains of Glaesir did not return in some other form and haunt others in it's resting place? This is merely where the record stops, not necessarily where the story ends.

As one who enjoys tryin to explain myth and tales, this whole thing sounds an awful lot like Thorolf was in close contact with radioactive materials, or that his tomb and home were located near such sources, or the groundwater was tainted?! The fact that he didn't rot, but instead became misshapen and blackened seems a likely clue! And then of course the animals and their brittle bones and sudden deaths... Still a terrifying thing to see happen even today!!!

The weird cries of the bull? It sounds like maybe it was part aurochs. It is possible for domestic cattle and aurochs to breed- the male hybrids will be sterile, though the females will not. Anyway, aurochs (now extinct wild bovines) had very loud vocalizations. So maybe?

This one we watched while driving across rural Illinois with a thunderstorm in the distance, adding to the story. I lived in GA for a few years so your mentioning of, people's reaction to anything they're not used to always makes me laugh. Anyway thank you for the content and I look forward to exploring this faith and it's stories more in the future.

Is there any evidence to suggest that the Norse or even that the Germanic peoples had a concept of reincarnation? Because Thorolf’s whole descent started when he dueled someone over land; as a bull, he would have all the land he could graze.
@Amy_the_Lizard

I assumed it was a case of possession myself, but reincarnation is another valid interpretation.

So was there intended to be a moral or lesson taken from this story, I wonder? Or is this simply an ancient version of a revenant liken to the urban legend Hook Man or Jason Voorhees? If so, I bet some dude sitting at the campfire or hearth ended the story with "And this all really happened right here where we sit... Goodnight!"

this is a really good horror story, and a really good reading. the music is just perfect too. i have done some reading into this subject and there were many kinds of draugr, some of them could change shape and some could cast spells, so they were far more dangerous than your normal undead. some draugr had vampire like powers, and they could be disfigured or possess great strength. i don't understand though why the bodies of the dead were not burned or chopped into pieces or beheaded straight away rather than bothering with burial as this would prevent them from returning later, i know that they do this later but it takes them a long time to try this. i have also read that one of odin's names is draugrdrotin or master of the undead, is there anything more that you can say about this?

It's interesting how different cultures interpret how and why someone becomes an "undead". In slavic folklore you don't have to be a cruel or spiteful person to become a vampire (or any other kind of dangerous draught like creatures). It can happen to a young woman who never got married. It can happen to a man who was born with two souls. It can happen to a drowning victim. It can happen to anyone who never got the right burial. And yes, when in doubt always burn the body Evil people often become evil spirits (without physical form and so potentially less harmful) who are unable to move on to the other side. Some souls even Satan doesn't accept It is an interesting mix of pagan beliefs and Christian conception of afterlife especially considering that devils weren't considered 100% evil all the time. Why should you be scared of the pitful, little creatures when some vamipires don't have bones and can slip through the gap between a door and its frame?

Hey ocean! I love your voice and I have the habit of binge watching your videos while I do stuff. It is enriching as well as it is really soothing. I just wanted to say that I love hearing you and it would be incredible if you idk, turned it into a story telling series. I bet a lot of your followers love to hear your just as I do and it would be very successful. Anyway thank you so much for all you've been doing on the chanel 🖤 it's very guiding for me and makes me feel in a actual pagan community. I am brazilian and there was a huge norse and east european migration here (from which I descend) but pagans here are mostly dumb ass nazi folkists and that is terrible mainly when you don't have a safe space for practicing in respect while being a mentally healthy human being with the basic notion of how the world spins. That is, it's lonely here not because people are agressive towards our beliefs (worse case, they just don't take you seriously) but because the community itself is soo toxic. In this sense, even if it's not in presence your videos make me very happy and close to my beliefs and practices and make me feel that in a way I have some companion that's not terribly toxic 🖤
