Thanks. Very practical, useful advice. Had a few lessons when I was eleven; then barely touched the horn over the next 50+ years. Well.... every 5 or 6 years I'd attempt to squeak out some Christmas carols (squeak being the operative word!). For the past five years I've been practicing maybe 1 to 1-1/2 hours daily, trying not to miss more than a day or two a month. It's led to some noticable improvements, and decent range. But, now in my seventies, I'm increasing my practice sessions and, with your help and others, hope to reach a highly advanced, near professional level. O.K., maybe not BSO first chair level. But certainly becoming better at sight reading and staying focused on maintaining a good full sound. Thanks again!

I find taking a break one day every week for a full 24 hrs allows my lips to grow- and fast. . If i do 2 hrs one day I'm not able to play as high the the next, if I have been doing range work. shortening my routine to about an hour of lip time and taking a day off per week has been a game changer. so far.

I break up three 30 minute sessions a day with an hour rest in between each session. That's all I can do now. Should I incease that? I've been putting more time into playing since I retired two years ago. Thanks for the advice. I will continue watching.

Very helpful Thanks. Can you make videos on some theories like Circle of fifth, Intervals, chord progressions types( II-V-I, etc), and how properly they're used in ones play or performance. Thank you.

Yes! Music theory and improvisation are my favorite things, and I'm planning some new videos on those topics. Stay tuned!

Do you have any suggestion for a decent player in his day but now 77 years old and has lost his endurance. I'm good for an hour and that's it. Use to do dance gigs for hours. BTW, thanks for the videos. They are the best! Also, my warm up is usually 10 minutes maximum. and always has been. I guess I have been getting away with it.

thanks for the advice! i don't know if you're still responding, but do you rest between exercises? my teacher says to rest as much as I play, so like between different parts of the exercise, i maybe buzz my lips for like 20 seconds. Also, Do you also journal what you do on your practice sessions? Does your warm up need to be around 15 minutes?

Whether I rest between exercises depends on how strenuous the exercise I'm doing is, but I like the rule of thumb that you should rest as much as you play. Generally I might do 30 minutes on, 30 minutes off, but I always listen to my body, and if I'm working on difficult range exercises, it might be five minutes on, five minutes off. All depends on the individual and the kind of exercise. I do keep a notebook to write new exercises or make note of patterns I'm working on, but I don't keep a daily log. Instead, I try to stick to a daily routine. A 15 minute warm up is a good general rule, but I tend to fluidly transition from my warm up into increasingly challenging exercises. I always start with five minutes of easy long tones. Hope that helps!

I have a student who tries to squeeze all you just said in to one hour a day. No break just going from one exercise to another.. he complains about embouchure swelling. He feels that he needs to get all of the exercises in every day without recovering and resetting his embouchure. Any thoughts!!
@RidgewoodSchoolofMusic
@RidgewoodSchoolofMusic 5 месяцев назад
Hey Anthony, he'll definitely get some swelling if he's playing tricky stuff for an hour with no break. Even just five minutes off or some quiet, low long tones between exercises can help that swelling. I can't blame him for enthusiasm and ambition, however! I might cut the workload down to 2/3rds, leave a little time to rest, and alternate 1/3 of the exercises/musical practice every day. Warming down will also help with the swelling if he has time at the end of his routine. Good luck!
