The Three Releases: Simplicity when chipping!

Simplicity is the key to my Three Release System. The aim for the short game system is to provide total clarity on how to easily alter ball flight and spin. It provides a clear framework any golfer can apply with immediate results and become their own coach.
Amateur golfers tend to have very little understanding of the short game, specifically how it differs from the long game or how they can make better decisions.
3 Releases: The Short Game System will give you the three key shots you need around a green. A low-running chip shot, a soft-landing spin shot, and the lob shot.
I’ve taught these shots to thousands of amateur golfers, hundreds of Tour Professionals including a Major Championship winner. I hope you enjoy this video!
If you would like to learn more then my book, The 3 Releases: The Short Game System is available worldwide on Amazon.

What makes me laugh are the guys that have a watched a "Phil Mickelson chipping class" and believe the opposite of this (de-lofting every club, hands well in front of ball, wrist in super bowed position). Phil can do that because he's one of the 15 best golfers ever, has chipped/pitched about 500k practice balls in his life and has elite leading edge and low-point control. The margin for error for this method is just so low - even for low handicap golfers. The way DG teaches this is the ONLY way 99% of golfers should ever be thinking about chipping and pitching. Thanks for posting 🙏

If you chip 2,000 chips a day then at the end of the year I would have chipped more than Phil has
@jasonstewart9919

@tylerholt6828 That’s not correct. Releasing the club is different to flipping the club which is your “40 yards over the green”. Flipping the club is is a result of being in poor position coming into the ball and is the body’s intuitive counter to sticking the leading edge into the ground behind the ball and duffing it. So a chipping style that is centered around delofting the face and steepening the attack angle is actually the reason why thin shots happen - that is of course unless you have practiced it so often and have elite control over the face and low point of let’s say, a top 20 player ever. There is a reason almost no pros on tour chip the way Phil does - they simply don’t, but you do you.
@jasonstewart9919
@jasonstewart9919 5 месяцев назад
@tylerholt6828 Good for you - you have poor technique and are working around it. Furthermore, why don't you send Dan Grieve a message explaining how he as a teaching professional (big difference between that and a tour professional) doesn't know what he's talking about. Good luck with that.

The last time I went to the range, I spent most of my time at the chipping green. I have printed out my checklists of all 3 releases, and been having more fun learning the short game lately. Even though I might successfully hit only 2 or 3 good shots out of every 10, it has become addictive trying Dan's way.

Great instruction! Editing this video could have done better i think. Be careful while cutting during the action/instruction. When you explaining something there is a “cut” right at the moment the most important part of your explanation is taking place. Maybe less boring but not good for your great instructions.

I hit a 56 wedge release 3 shot a few days ago at hainsworth park. The hole was at the very front of the green with about 2sqm of flat to land on before a huge roll down after. Release 3 just stopped dead with a little spin and left me 30cm par putt. I'd never have made this shot, or made par on this hole, without watching this channel. So thank you! I watched this video 9 days ago. Since then, I have practiced the feels of both the stance and grip associated with the #1 and #2 styles around the house and yard. Played this past weekend and NAILED the short game. Seeing the lie, noticing what is NOT feasible and deciding on #1 or #2 (no #3’s this trip) and firing. Unreal. I’ll be lending this video many praise and shares to those I meet out on the Muni’s.

I used to be realy good at chipping in my early days untill I focused so much on driving straight. I think my problem is grip pressure after listening to you. I'm very wooden and no rotation in my hips. It's got so bad I'm scared of close chips. 100 + yards no problem. It's the worry of hitting it too far and then I blade it. I'm going now to practice what I've learnt from you 👍👍

Got the book for Xmas and its made massive difference - not yet graduated to release 3!! Release 1 is giving me great consistency with distance and lower flight and no Chunks or thins. But I always seem to be to the right of target when the ball rolls out. Is the solution simply to aim further left at setup or am i missing something in the process itself?

I like this very much. Interesting how we each “trigger” the releases in different ways. My release one is activated with left thumb and release two and three are activated with right index finger pressure point but each has a different right wrist hinge trigger. Like you said, release 3 is more deliberate about “swinging” the head past the hands and into the holdster. Dan do you think about finger pressure - left vs right hand to help with these releases?

All great ideas, but the only time he talked about ball position (or had the camera show it) was on release two. Why? Isn't that super important on all three? Also, did he open the club face on 3? I carry 50, 54, 58. 10 degrees of bounce apart from the 58 with 9. That’s for those bare bunker lies. I’ve struggle most with release 2, getting it now though… it’s the soft hands that finally registered. But, I’m wondering if I should go back to 56 and 60? I can and do play the 54 out of the sand fairly often. But I wonder if release 2 would more effective with the 56? I evened out the lofts to gap a bit better, and I do enjoy the 54; it’s got more juice that I find dialling in for pitching very good, again based on the technique in the book. But I did always enjoy the 56, it’s super predictable for me. Or do I just treat the 58 like the 56? Is it too lofted for release 2? Do you carry 52, 56, 60 Dan?

Dan, love your instruction and videos. Its helping me hone my short game and really gain strokes vs just trying to hit the ball farther. I just have one request. Please re-edit this video without all the zooming in and keep perspective full body and include the club/strike please. When youre explaining stuff and demonstrating, it does us no good to only see a zoom in of your face and chest when you swing the club. For me to learn, ive gotta see the other face, the club face. I think itd be better if you just leave the face on and down the line on a tripod and edit from there. Really love all your videos and the concepts. Its bringing back my love of the game after quitting for a while out of frustration.

My chipping and pitching have always been very poor. One thing I've noticed from your technique is how close you stand to the ball and the upper arms are resting on your torso. I was standing too far away from the ball and arms away from my chest. This was causing all my direction and contact problems (not sure why). However, after copying your setup I improved instantly and dramatically.

Read the book, use in practice and starting to notice difference & playing partners ask if I have changed clubs as a new noise. Although struggling with the very wet conditions ATM.

I did a few hour’s practice. I don’t actually think I need release 2 & 3. 9 iron to 58 with release 1 will cover 99% of missed greens shots. Outstanding tip. 👍

Simply an amazing demo of exception skill Dan. I've watch a few of your videos and have been impressed with your teaching technique. Just subscribed. My most often miss of the finesse chips around the green is hitting 4-6" behind the ball. Any tips to avoid this would be appreciated.

Hi Dan love your videos. Got a question on if we are hitting behind the ball or divot is happening after

Dan, I play golf sunny, San Diego California. I have good short game. I have started using my 54 bounce wedge more but I feel when I focus on the release technique I tend to miss hit shots as I feel locked up. I use your release technique as a pre-shot and set up only
