Listening in January of 2024 still. I first heard this on channel 10 public television, in Memphis Tennessee, in the fall of 1990. I had never been interested in Opera at any point, but my mother was watching this one night, and called me in because she thought I would enjoy it. She was right. Stunning, beyond beautiful, and at 47, I appreciate it even more now than I could then. This is the peak, the pinnacle.
Italy is heaven. Rome is magical. Luciano, Placido, and Jose are simply devine. These 3 were so big in the 90s that they were watched that night by an audience of 800 MILLION PEOPLE and it was their first joint performance that night back in the summer of 1990. I remember watching it on pbs with my father who was a musician. God I wish I was there. They put on such a delightful show. One of my favorite songs was O solo mio. There was such a playful showmanship during that song!
Was TDY in Naples because of something totally unpredicted and got to see this live in Rome with a friend who had 4 tickets and she even drove. What a concert. Never seen pavoratti better the 3 of them made magic that night IT WAS BEAUTIFUL and it was all an accident EVERY DISAPPOINTMENT IS A BLESSING IN DISGUISE
I remember this Evening as it was yesterday: We spent the Summer Holiday on Sylt at the Northern Sea. It was the Saturday before the Worldchampionship Final in Rome at Sunday. Germany played Argentina and won the third Title after 1954 and 1974. We watched the Broadcast of the Concert on Saturday Evening. It was Magic - und the Stars.
The finale of the Nessum Dorma aria sung by the entire trio of tenors is one of the most beautiful things in the World. Not only in music, it is comparable to the frescoes in the sicilian chapel or beauty of the Eiffel tower. If we were to send into space something about the human genre and its achievements, we should send just this.
I am 30 years old, and I will always be sad that I never had the chance to see these phenomenal men in concert like this. They will never have equals- eternal legends.
tictac, Many thanks for providing this wonderful concert from 1990 with the Three Tenors. I remember seeing this at the time-think it was the night before the World Cup Final in Rome. Superb combination of the singers-especially when they take to the stage together. Also playful banter between the trio on show- particularly during 'O Sole Mio'. Think it was the first time this kind of concert was done-refreshing from past days when there was much rivalry between artists of this kind. Also marvellous music from Mehta and orchestra.
Classical music is my favorite, but when you hear these 3 greats, it becomes even more compelling. By the way, also listen to Maria Callas, Anna Netrebco, Diana Damrau.
Meine Meinung.
